Special Report: GarageBand Jam Pack: Voices Analysis
August 11, 2007 | by pm

Image Though Steve Jobs neglected to mention the existence of a new Jam Pack at Apple's Special Event on Tuesday, the latest addition to the Jam Pack family made its way onto Apple's GarageBand information page with a few details. However, we feel that the information provided before purchase is incomplete so, as we have with past Jam Packs, iCompositions has purchased a copy of GarageBand Jam Pack: Voices and audited its loop and software instrument contents.

As with past Jam Packs, Voices includes substantially more than the claimed "1500 royalty-free vocal loops." Upon installing Voices, I found 1,701 loops in:

/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Jam Pack Voices

Voices contains 28 software instruments, again more than Apple's claim of 20 instruments, that are divided into three categories: Choir, with 19 instruments; Percussion, with 4 instruments, and Soloist, with 5 instruments.

Contrary to what has been stated elsewhere on the internet, GarageBand Jam Pack: Voices does include two demo songs that make use of software and real instruments, "Dawn After Storm" and "In Paradisium." They are stored in:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/GarageBand Demo Songs/Voices Demo Songs

Voices requires GarageBand 2 or later, Logic Pro 7 or Logic Express 7, 512MB of RAM, and a DVD drive. The requirements also state that you need 3GB of storage available but I found that actual storage usage is around 1.7 GB. The missing 1.3 GB is probably used somewhere during the installation process and returned to the user upon completion.

Giveaway

Before we get on to the full listing of GarageBand Jam Pack: Voices loops and software instruments, I just happen to have a second copy of Voices to give away. Post a comment to this article to enter to win. A commenter will be randomly selected on August 19th and will receive a free copy of GarageBand Jam Pack: Voices. This contest is open to all members of iCompositions.

it is a great article, cause this is the first time i have ever know that there was a Jam Pack vocals..... well even if im using apple's product, but in my country , there's not alots of information about it including information about Jam Pack, plus im not really kind of person always looking for an available information...
but with this thread been posted and i saw it when i click on the forum page, i should say it is a good and brilliant way to let others know about apple's product.....

Very nice article and worth well for the prize too....
the forum are always perfect choice for knowing a new product that i haven't know about it before....
it is helpful....
Thank you very much... even if i didn't win it, but the information itself have halp me knowing about this product

I can tell you that the loops (and the software instruments, I assume) are recordings of real vocalists. However, a review of the quality of the loops is beyond my level of expertise. I encourage anyone who uses this Jam Pack to post a review in the Tools section to help others make purchasing decisions.

I don't believe that there is a demo available online but .Mac members might get 100 free loops from the package at some point.

Sounds interesting. I look forward to hearing the inevitable wave of Voices loop-based songs hitting iComp. It'll be interesting to see what people do with them. My feeling is that vocal loops are probably best used as a texture, rather than a "lead vocal" (I'm thinking either backing vocals or the kind of vocals in some types of electronica, where they add something to the music without being the focal point). My suspicion is that trying to use vocal loops as a lead vocal for a song will be great right up until half a dozen people have all used the same loops for lead vocals, at which point they'll start to sound a bit weird. Still, I'm just starting to learn to sing myself, so I guess it's inevitable that I'd feel threatened by a pack of vocals by professional singers...

Vocals have traditionally been the great leveller on iComp -- it's possible to simulate most things with loops and software instruments, but for vocals you actually needed to be able to sing. Now people will be producing tracks without that prerequisite, which opens up a new range of possibilities for everyone. Should be interesting...

The sheer greed in this thread really disappoints me. Something for nothing. That's all the modern world cares about.

Therefore it would be far better if it went to someone who would use it to make the world a better place.

Modesty prevents me from suggesting a winner.

Edit : Take me out. I bought it and tbh I don't think it's worth the money. Useful if you're doing R&B and want 34 versions of "ooh aah" but is of little use to me. Evene the choirs, whicvh aren't bad, sound very similar.

Cheers

I already bought it so i don't need to win. the voices sound good really good. they won't replace a real singer but they could be really good for adding quick samples. the production quality is very high. alot of the samples contain harmonies of the singer and the really the production is incredible. some of the improv lyricless stuff could sit really well in a mix. the generator synth are ok they might grow on me. the vocal shouts are cool and definetly could be used in dance music for accents. one thing is curious 3 of the "Vocal Shouts" are missing
the Hip Hop, Rock and Silver screen Shouts are missing. Genrators>Vocals> (scroll to bottom) the last three before whistler. where are these it kinda sucks they are missing because i like the other vocal shouts. this jpack definetly fills a need in GBand and does not require you to upgade to GBand 3 (yet)-gospel

Exceptionnaly, my Apple Retailer in France has received the pack. Most of the time, we get "new" products several weeks after USA... But i've tried it to the new 24 inch iMac at the Apple Center.
That's a good pack, but not as cool as the symphony or world music pack : it's really poor in Virtual Instruments, and it's sometimes difficult to hear the difference between classical choir, chamber choir, etc.
Loops are nice, and can instantly add a good mood to a musical track.

I am very interested in Voices. For so long I have wanted to add vocals to my compositions. GB's "Mixed Choir" is nice, but it just doesn't cut it (I mean, Mixed Choir sounds like a choir singing miles away) and Bodt's Church Choir just sounds so unrealistic.

It's not just choirs, too. Every once in a while, I feel that my music (especially my work-in-progress Magnum Opus) needs a solo voice...one lone voice...breaking out of the darkness...

Whoa! It's like I just tapped into my inner poet! Anyhoo, I can't sing. But I really hope that I can win this, so I can (maybe) revive my muse...*

*Yes, that is the reason I haven't been posting new songs for a while. My muse seems to have gone into hibernation...

I'm all for it. Much better than spending $100 anyday! I've been looking to progress to Voices of the Apocalypse or Vienna Symphonic Library, but before I can shell out the grand for Logic, and at least another grand for VSL or VOTA, I would gladly give this a try. Also, I think it would be an excellent idea to POST SOME SAMPLE COMPOSITIONS using Voices, and especially one which shows off the various styles, articulations, and textures included with the jam pack! Thanks for the opportunity!

This is definitely the Jam Pack I have been waiting for. I am filming a movie called 2244 which follows a group of survivors across the scarred landscape of post-armagedon Earth. As they attempt to evade capture and death, they begin to unravel the mystery surrounding the artifacts, and discover the largest secret of their time.

I was helping my friend write the score, and we both really wanted vocals to give it a nice epic feel. Hopefully, this will fill that void. If I don't win it, I will definitely buy it. (once I get $100 smiley )

If you haven't heard about it (which you probably haven't) feel free to check it out at 2244.co.nr

Voices - zippity do dahs - strummin' hums - just ahhhhhhhhhh!

Thanks for the breakdown... it made me go investigate what I already have with GB and SoundtrackPro - discovered a new tool - Apple Loops Utility. Geez aurally dyslexia and not reading the instructions!

Maybe I should stick to humming off key!

I could not get anything to sound like a choir sound, and the choir samples were so hard to listen to sustained, I eventually swapped them for instruments while writing. Anyone have any good results to share?

I just ordered Voices online. I got Rhythm for my birthday and have been doing a lot with that. I'll post a review when I get it. I'll say one thing: Rhythm gave A LOT more options, especially for guitars, which is good because I play guitar in a band. But my G-band stuff is separate from the band although I made loops of some guitar sounds last night to mess around with. I'll try to upload some stuff soon.

I have and use this JamPack. You can hear just a bit of it in my upload "I Know The Truth" I used the Gospel Choir patch.

A lot of things I may never use in the loops but the ones I have used are super.

4 stars!!

As someone who DOES sing, and was dying to get hold of this jam pack when it finally came out, I want to add a small warning - it's REALLY annoying that the vocal loops are almost all way too specific to 'pop' music styling to be useful for people who aren't making pop songs. They are also SUPER slick so they feel very commercial unless used sparingly and with care. It can, and has, been done very effectively but I was pretty disappointed when I realized there was almost nothing I could use amongst the loops. (In fact, that's one of the reasons I'm getting East West Choirs and also trying to make my own vocal soundfont!)

OTOH, the 'voices' instruments are all pretty darned fabulous! I use them all the time to great effect and they are really quite flexible.

One other thing, it's only $50 to get jam packs if you're a student, teacher, or school administrator. Lots of people don't take advantage of these discounts or don't even know they exist.

Last, but not least, if you're going to buy Logic Studio at some point, don't bother buying all the jampacks since they come free as part of that package (with Soundtrack Pro but they populate automatically into Logic and GarageBand the next time you reboot after installing).
