Visual Novel 1

Hey guys! Just wanted to come here and ramble about a project I'm working on!

Late last year, I decided that since soundtracks are interesting to me, that my music could be made with more story telling. This happened with Battle Dragged Wip 2 where I actually envisioned events for this music! I even developed a character from this very tune and could vividly imagine everything going on, so I wrote it all down - not to accompany the music as a song description but for me to forget about it on my desktop lol, or to be like, "There! I have a story to this track; yea!"

What I had taken away from that experience however, is that I had just created a couple minutes of, as dumb as it may sound, an anime in my head! I had character expressions, the landscape, the action.., it was all figured out and heavily derived from my concepts I had written about nearly two years ago here! Developing Blog Feb. 2016 The thing that stuck with me most in the comments section of that blog was, "have you ever considered writing screenplays?"

Well, truth is, that project I was blogging about then hasn't seen fruition because I'm basing all the things I want to create off of masterpieces! I'm not like Nintendo, lol. I don't have the budget or R&D to articulate all my ideas but my experience has to start somewhere. I've always fueled stories off music and music off stories but have usually done one devoid of the other. I've drawn heaps of comics then a decade of none.

I thought it would be so cool back in the day to have a CD soundtrack to accompany a comic but without any voice over, how would you sync the music up to the page? The other thing about a comic is you could sometimes be drawing the same thing over and over again like backdrops or characters with just some subtle expression changes so it would be nice if a story could be told with re-usable assets like on computers or something... Say in the way of RPGs! A RPG would be awesome and I'd love to make that but there's the whole time aspect; both to play and make - like I hardly could do it with time (spent doodling or writing in class) as a teenager let alone now. But what if I could make a RPG with only the dialogue parts!?

Well, there's just that! Popularized, I believe in Japan is the visual novel! I wish I would have known about it sooner rather than pretty much re-inventing it for myself and I will try to explain it in the way my story will be presented and that is; you see an image of the scene as a background as well as some representations of characters and their expressions along with some sound effects, music, and screen interaction. Real visual novels, I bet will have more interaction but mine will be linear for the sake of completion.

Going back to the whole screenplay thing, my goal is to make my story take the same time-ish to read as it would to watch a movie - and that is pretty exciting to make that connection as it kind of feels like I'm making a movie, y'know!? Haha - but it still leaves a lot to the readers' imagination - like maybe sometimes you'll have characters "running away" from Godzilla or something; the music is all epically intense, the background shows a torn up city, the character representations and dialogue relay expressions of panic, and the screen is all shaking with sound effects going on of heavy stomping... But you don't actually see Godzilla! Like they're off camera only to be seen imaginatively in the distance by the characters that are on-screen and often descriptions are exclaimed by the characters themselves, like, "Look, it's Godzilla!"

It just adds a fun, creative aspect to it! I've learned a lot through working on this and especially that I have a tricky time seeing all the different pieces of the project before they come together as my brain wants to view it as a whole. It's kind of like, what is all this stuff and how is it all going to appear when it's completed? I'm having to piece meal things together from my phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop which means I also gotta keep file sizes down for Bluetooth sharing since that works pretty good for me, so the project is fairly stripped of things that I'd like to see in it now but will be added in later as final touches.

Just running through what I have programmed in so far, it takes an hour to play! (which is also the typical death point of my projects but I'm writing here now to keep it going!) It won't have to be played all in one sitting either as I will try to incorporate some save points. The scoop on it atm is: I plan to have the story down by the end of March. You may hear some monthly music uploads (with other tunes being shared weekly on they other account) during this time frame. The game, which only requires the use of one button to advance the story, is being developed to run on Windows- So get that BootCamp or attic PC going ahead of time if you don't normally run teh .exe filez!

Actually, and this is where things could get pretty ugly in terms of sharing- I'm using very old software in compatibility mode to do this which I used to run with uh, Windows 98! waaaah! uh, but I do have it working smoothly in Win 8.1 which still might be a... uh... well it's just I'm needing to use these programs I'm familiar with to ensure completion which is still alright if I can enjoy it but imagine it would possibly be enjoyable by perhaps like two others if made more mainstream.

Seriously though, if enough of someone could run it and liked it, I would at least explore what it takes to make it or subsequent releases more available but that may depend on if there's an audience which had better not be hinging on my marketing skills because I was hardly even going to write about it here at all today but if you guys have some suggestions or a room full of cash I could work out of, that would be great!!

Thanks for reading and stay posted!!

You go! Build your world as you want it to be. No "room full of cash" here – I am interested though. smiley

Always up for playtesting. I like visual novels. smiley Best of luck with it! I did a few similar things many years ago but I have no graphics skills whatsoever so I was always dependent on collaborators to bring projects to fruition, and my experience was generally that I was more into it than they were. These days I seem to have way too much going on to focus on much of anything despite repeated efforts to cut it all down...

@becwil yea what is this plastic thingy that has no batteries but puts marks on this paper stuff, weird smiley I have my tablet again now but I thought actually writing may bring forth a different kind of creativity.., who knows XP

@eido I hear you. I try to cut stuff out like these creative time wasting things lol but then find out just how good it is for me to do. Recreation is essential so even unfinished creative projects are important to me. I do have to get this made mostly during winter though as once spring rolls around I chuck everything aside and get outside ;p To do this visual novel, I am employing assets for all the artwork and just going with whatever I can to best resemble the characters and backgrounds with my creative focus being on the story and the music. I'll mention everything that people are ok for me to use in the credits smiley

@Aamp: Yeah, I think for some people (including you and me) there's something profoundly healthy about taking time to do something creative now and then. Every time over the last 20-odd years I've whittled down my hobbies to exclude anything creative (making music, writing, running pen'n'paper role-playing games) I've gone slowly insane until I've noticed and brought something back. Same goes at work - if I find myself trapped in a rut turning the same handle day after day I rapidly lose the will to live. It needs to come out!

@eido Cheers to that!

One thing I was asked and I'm going to put this here for when I direct people to it is, "what is the target age group for this story?" And it's mature. It has non-graphic violence and le coarse language so it could be considered what we would label music here as explicit.

As a little update, I've finished writing the end! It has an ending!! But I went with a pincer attack and wrote the story going forward to a a certain point, then wrote the ending, and now have to go back and close in the rest. It's helping me identify holes in the story which is good.

If there are any other questions, I'll add them in here or in another blog.

Aamp uses, left hand! It's super creative!

@mre I may get distracted easily, but I really want to see this one through - even if I release it in versions that I do editions to. Thanks! smiley
