Atomic Buffalo

We called ourselves the "heard" and every jam was called the wallow.

Neil Young once said Crazy Horse was the third greatest garage band in the world. When asked to explain, he said Led Zeppelin was the second greatest, and that the greatest garage band in the world was still out there somewhere.

He was, of course, talking about us, the Atomic Buffalo, the greatest unknown band that ever was. A nineties garage band with a sixties sensibility playing songs written in the eighties about things that happened in the seventies. Atomic Buffalo began during the great flood of ninety-three. It lasted exactly ten years. This record is all that remains.

I have a love-hate relationship with this recording. I love it because it's the only good quality recording of the band, but I hate it, because it's a really bad performance. We regularly played everyone one of these songs ten times better than this recording would prove.

Going to a studio was a big deal for us. We talked about it for years. So, we were nervous and made all kinds of mistakes. We always played at night;-- and the recording was made during the morning. Everything was tense and awkward. We recorded as many songs as possible in a dozen single takes instead of just working on one song, thinking we could always edit the tracks later. Also, the lead guitarist wasn't there, and neither was our sideman, who added everything from the accordion to trombone and trumpet. Both of those guys were sorely missed. The engineer said he could dub them in later. But, later never came.

I know it sounds like a bunch of excuses, but if you had been on the front porch, or in the basement, or at the machine shed, or Jason's garage, you would know what I'm talking about. We called ourselves the "heard" and every jam was called the wallow.

Will the Buffalo ever roam again? I doubt it, at least not as the crazy outdoor party jam band it once was. New band recordings using GarageBand? Yes! Once I get a handle on recording and mixing with GarageBand, I'd like to get everybody on GB tracks.

Thanks for listening. As always, comments are appreciated.
