Very nice arrangement and production. That bizarre, intermittent, soft click-clack sound is very cool and couldn't be more well placed in the mix. I just wish there was a way to give a little more body or depth to Misty's vox in the mix. Not loudness necessarily, but maybe some sort of spacial element, such as reverb or delay. Forgive me, I really shouldn't say anything, this is more of an artistic/subjective call; its just how it feels to me. But I do love this track and what you have added to it. Wonderful to listen to. smiley Peace, AG

Man they are going to have to make a movie just to use this series of compositions for, Harald. I told this to soulima once too, I do not have this ability so I admire it so much when I hear it or see it in another's work as I do in these, that is your ability to create "sequels", or continuations of a theme and remain equally creative in each subsequent composition. Again, Bravo! smiley Peace, AG

Sorry I somehow missed seeing this post until now; wow, Harald, amazing work here. You are always the master at expressing the power of the soul in spiritual growth, but this is very surprising and effective. For the first half of the track I was unsure of how I was responding to it, after crossing the middle-point I grew comfortable with your choices of pads. At about two-thirds I began to understand where it was leading and, at the end, I was completely satisfied that I had done the right thing to stay through the entire track.... hmm... am I expressing the talent of a wonderful composer or a metaphor for spiritual growth? Maybe both? Anyway, as I said, wow! Nice one, my friend, once again I am moved by your music. smiley Thank you for that, Peace, AG

Bagatelle (Number Five) by soulima 3 months ago
Wow, John, I can only try to describe some of the things that make this my favorite in the series, so far. The point-counter-point between that soft, lovely melody arising from all of those flowing piano notes and the calmer, moodier woodwinds is almost hypnotizing.... and the way in which this falls so eloquently in place among its predecessors in form and beauty. I admire that. If I hit upon anything that one could call beautiful, I cannot hold it for very long. I have to bounce around or my comps begin to decay. At least that's how it feels for me; but these, these are evolving, one building upon the next, in ways far beyond my scope of imagination. Bravo!! smiley Peace, AG

Whohoo! I got an eighth note! I see them occasionally, don't know for sure what they even mean, but a very lovely addition to the page... @Axelbreeze and @RiGee , muchos gracias, thanks for the listen and your kind words, that means a lot to me. @SISTERS Are you sayin' I'm simple? I resemble that remark! Just because I'm not quite sure of how many of you there actually are doesn't make me simple, does it? smiley Actually thanks much, that's exactly what I was going for -- at the time that i originally recorded this I was putting down a demo tape (I wrote tape! Sorry I was having a flashback or something... more accurately: demo files to be put on a CD) -- of how I would sound for a live gig. I was still playing some coffee house and small pub gigs then, and (loosely) considering taking it out on the road smiley smiley Peace, AG
FLYING SOUNDCARPET by RiGee 3 months ago

As soon as I started to listen, I remembered the Northern Lights track and went back to listen to it first in order to hear this part in context. I think its a beautifully constructed tapestry of sound RiGee. I love it from beginning to end (?)... I want to also say that you have mixed these layers very well, there is a genuine sense of physical dimension that I experience when I listen to this with the cans on and a perfect clarity to each layer. Adding these etherial voices was a great touch, I was happily surprised smiley Peace, AG

P.S. Both tracks work very well alone or together.
Pineapples and Coconuts (final mix) by Audiogasm 3 months ago
@becwil Thanks for your comments bec. I do have a tendency to lower things into the mix a little more than most folks and I know what you mean about the electric being a little low. The amp setting is actually the original recording through an old Fender Twin Reverb amp. I used to own the Twin Reverb specifically because it was one of the preferred amps of the "surf" guitarists in '60s. I love that sound, so you'll be hard-pressed to get me to change it smiley I'm having a little problem adjusting bass right now due to a change in equipment. I used to have a set of AKG reference cans and some really good monitoring speakers. Now I'm using Sennheiser cans and my monitors are pretty low-end. I think the Sennheiser cans make the bass sound a little more prominent than I'm used to. Meaning I will have to bring it up more in the mix than it sounds like it should be to me for it to reach other listeners. I did use an ol' surf-style bass riff on this too which comes through clear when I listen with these cans... Its a work in progress and I appreciate your comments. smiley Peace, AG

Lovely track.... I think it fulfills, in me, exactly what you're going for; beauty, and an easy flow with a nice little bridge in there for flavor. Hobo's Lullaby (cover) re-master 2 by Audiogasm 3 months ago
@RedthruNthru Yeah, Donna, this is the issue when recording guitar and voice on one track and the fine line I was speaking of in the other post. In order to get enough reverb on the guitar to give it its "due" amount of body, I end up with almost too much reverb on the vocals. But I can justify it by referring to Arlo Guthrie's production style, which I have always felt was right on the "acceptable" edge for traditional folk music. I think that's where I am now. Plus it never hurts to divert your attention away from my decaying voice and towards the production methods smiley As long as we're talking about reverb, noise, what strings I'm using on my guitar or how many cups of coffee I had before I laid down the track, etc, we are safely avoiding the issue of why a person with my voice is using up valuable storage space on iComps with something like this... An interviewer once asked Tom Waits the hard question, "How did a guy with a voice like yours ever get started in a singing career?" He said it had boiled down to a job in air conditioning and heating installation or music, so he thought he'd give music a shot. smiley Peace AG

Thanks John, Jack and Tom. I respect all of your opinions, this means a lot smiley @soulima I am actually considering playing around with using some FX over the dry version to give it the sound as if it were recorded on a '40's era radio show, just for fun smiley @JackFancy That;s the best compliment a man can receive, thank you. @toveco Thanks for all of your helpful comments. This mastering is, I think, what we both wanted to hear from the first and it wouldn't have happened without you, God bless... smiley Peace, AG
Pineapples and Coconuts (final mix) by Audiogasm 3 months ago
@soulima Thanks John. That means a lot coming from you. I was getting worried, so many hits and no comments... If I were going to put it on a CD, I would redo the acoustic finger picking. I was heavy on the base notes in many places and a little sloppy on some of the changes, but for just something to listen to, I like it being a little loose... in the live finger-style version: http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=174007 you'll hear something of a boring part played on the three lower register strings. In my hubris, I was trying to employ a section based upon an idea I picked up from the guitar arrangement for Beethoven's "Fur Elise" which I had to perform in recital once. Needless to say, mine ended up sounding rather deadpan compared to a Beethoven composition smiley Hence the electric solo I put over it in the "studio" version. But eventually I hope to make it pop a little better,,, you can't hear it on this track because it works ideally as a supporting bass-line under the electric. But I actually like this comp. Maybe its not great, but it makes me feel good. And eventually I hope to perfect it. smiley Peace, AG

Wow, guys this is awesome! Somehow I missed this, but those spiritual powers of music have drawn me to it, and three years after everyone else, I have to say wow again, that's all I can say.... There is just too much good about it to go into detail, but Wow! Peace, AG
Hobo's Lullaby (cover) by Audiogasm 3 months ago
Thanks for your kind words RedthruNthru, DJ_Siatt and toveco. @toveco I totally agree about the reverb. The result we are hearing here stems from two things. First, I am still experimenting with mastering sound with both guitar and vocals on one track and I had great difficulty finding the "sweet-spot" of reverb that would compliment both parts. I finally found what seemed to me to be a pretty good result in Logic; but this leads to the next problem... Put bluntly, I am lazy... not only lazy with things like timing and re-does, I also suffer in a laziness towards listening to my own stuff after the final work is done -- that is, once it's bounced down to the .mp3 file. In some cases I will later find musical parts which are bright and clear in Logic that ended up being undetectable on the .mp3; but I never even hear it until someone else points out that it seems like something is missing! But sometimes, and this seems to be the case here, my "environmental" mastering will sound much different than it did in Logic, and, as I said above, I was just too lazy to check it out before I posted it. For me, with traditional folk music, there is a fine line which can easily be tripped over into the realm of over production. This, combined with my inherent laziness lands me in this mud-hole quite often. After your comment and listening to it again, I may re-post. So don't be surprised... smiley Peace, AG
Hobo's Lullaby (cover) by Audiogasm 3 months ago
Thanks for the kind words folks... @soulima When discussing Woody Guthrie's songwriting, Pete Seeger once said, "Any damn fool can get complicated, it takes a genius to keep it simple." I think those words apply perfectly to this song. I wish I could write like that. smiley Peace, AG
Bagatelle (Number Four) by soulima 3 months ago
Beautiful piece John. Sometimes your music is truly medicine for my soul, soulima. This is not just excessive laudation for a friend, I mean this. To me, a good composition (or song) is measured by a simple "yard-stick": if people enjoy it, its good -- its very simple. That's one of the wonderments of music, there is something to be found for any of us to enjoy. But for my personal taste, a great composition is determined by how it touches my heart, and these bagatelles touch my heart deeply. Thank you for sharing these jewels with us. @ihussain To me, the word "bagatelle" sounds more like something I would have with coffee in the morning; and in the case of John's bagatelles, this is sometimes true smiley smiley Peace, AG

Thanks to all for listening, for your comments and your kind words... I've already mentally picked it to pieces again and have made a couple more little audio tweaks. But I don't want to keep posting the exact same song over and over; I do think this comp has some value, I just have to get it right. A little note here (speaking of posting the same song over and over); while digging through all of my myriad of un-named audio files (!) trying to re-route them into the right place in Logic -- by the way, be very careful to immediately check for everything important to you if you ever clone your hard drives, I have lost tons of audio files, the entire guts of Logic went missing and even after getting back my install disc to reload Logic, Soundtrack Pro still won't open. I lost so much of my Native Instruments software and audio units, etc that they graciously gave me links to just download Absynth 5 and Guitar Rig 4 because we finally had to face the fact that there was no fix on the horizon -- I came across a live recording (recorded very poorly with a video camera, (but it was far too dark for any of the video to show) of the acoustic finger-style part of this track that I played at a little show I played in a coffee house in Fargo, ND about three or four years ago http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=174007 ). I need to clean a bunch of noise off of it and then try to polish up the tones of my guitar in Logic, but I will post it within a day or two probably. @soulima smiley She's way prettier than my music... how do you think I get people to listen to my stuff? I lure them in with the pretty girls! smiley Peace, AG

I have to find some way to make it sell!!), or selling used cars, one or the other, that tongue is far too silver for anything else smiley smiley Peace and Love to all entering into this new year, AG

Just an amazing collab here guys! The guitars are smooth and clean and @eagle the vox is as good as it gets... I was walking around the cabin feeling it as naturally as if I were listening to the original smiley Peace, AG
