First let me say this is a great tune, well played, sung and mixed by all. The live (if virtual) band just feels right here. Secondly, this stirred a very strange desire in me to start a band in a garage "down the street" from you guys' house and get a rivalry going! NOBODY has stirred that feeling in me since the mid-1970s!!! Your vibe is quite an accomplishment especially considering how hard it is to get this feeling in a virtual collaboration.

Blues, world, new age, smooth jazz... other. It's otherworldly. Listening with headphones on, my equilibrium is just about forcing my head to slosh from side to side. Nice and mellow yet there's a good swapping of lead instruments, then after the break midway through, that bouncy bass and Rhodes-sounding piano come in as if to introduce a whole second movement. So smooth.

Aah, the lyrical nuances astound as the subtle percussion lulls and soothes. Oh, wait--wrong song. Glad to see you taking your music career seriously. Oh, wait--wrong song again.

Keep it up and you'll end up in the principal's office. Your take on this kind of e-mess is more engaging than I've come to expect from electro-noise. Just to get me to comment on something without guitars in it is an accomplishment. So take my stars; I'll just have to make some more!
There's a Kind of Hush by michaeljayklein 1 day ago
That's you all over words like "ah-tonight."

I still have this on vinyl, mind you. About your Next stop Bobby Sherman, the obvious choice is "Easy Come, Easy Go." But then there's always the theme song to TV's "Here Come the Brides," starring Bobby Sherman. I can just hear you singing, "The bluest skies you've ever seen / are in Seattle..." to a Copelandesaue TV orchestra. Or more 60s bubblegum. My vote is for the 1910 Fruitgum Company's "Red Light Green Light."

Then again, your inimitable jazz stylings are a bit more dignified...

This is fantastic. I hear a full band playing, not just a "hey, can you do a track to this?" Part of the credit goes to the performances but also the studio work has to get credit, too. GREAT job. some of the best, maybe THE best, electric blues to be heard in these parts. The led guitar, btw, is superb as a carrier of emotion, it pairs-up so well as a "second vocal" here. Congrats on a great tune.

Not my genre but I can appreciate your rich talent. I just love when I wander off the beaten path and find something this well done. Love your vox; reminds of good old Eurythmics, with a few really neat touches of grit and guitars, which I found to be a real treat. And the mix is absolutely tops. I hope you do very well out there with this. You deserve it, especially as a reward for the generosity you've shown by sharing it here. That'd be a fair hit of karma.

Didier, this is far outside my usual listening menu, but we've both been here a while and I stopped by on a whim. I'm glad I did. Your lyrics are zen-simple and rendered with excellence, effects or not. Your studio workmanship is as clear as a cloudless blue sky here, and the groove does transport me back to the clubs of my happily misspent youth.
We Gave It A Try by RubyDubidoux 5 days ago
This is why the pain is worth the investment in love. This short, sweet and elegant all around. I understand what grathy is saying about Carole. This, like she and others a few decades back were able to infuse pop with a broad jazz and even folk sensibility that seems to have been lost in today's over-segmented music marketplace. The composition also reminds me of some of the great Leon Russell's work.

Except for places like this, where we just do what we do, and what we love. Glad you gave this a try, Elaine.
Dont Look Back by Abstractvision 5 days ago
The music is a mere backdrop for your voice, which is strong enough here that it could stand a cappella if you were to want it to. We should all be just that strong.

I am not a dance music guy. Sure there was that year where as a single bachelor I chased after a triathlete no-alcohol girlfriend who just wanted to dance and I'd follow her to the Limelight (Chicago) and dance all night wising she'd get drunk already and yes it was trendy and hot...

HEY! YOU WROTE THIS ABOUT ME IN 1985! HOW DID YOU KNOW?

Maybe it was you stalking me? Parody or not, this primal steaming estrovox really is too hot to laugh away. I think the whole dance scene (from one decade to the next) is driven by a similar parody, where participants know they are putting on their club costumes and playing roles... so your parody is consistent with the less conscious version in the actual clubs. Just maybe.

RED HORSES by Barretok 5 days ago
I have three words for this tune: pyscosexidelic. Your instrumentation, mix and lyrical goods are all of those things. The production almost reminds me of Dylan's take on some of the darker, bluesier corners of Americana. I appreciate the mix of senses that seems to lace the lyrics. It's a big, bloody, healthy celebration of the half of the planet that are the prey of the other, sweatier half. Watch out women, for Bernardo's furtive night-glances.

That stream of consciousness comment I just wrote is far from intelligible I guess. Just riffing along. In short: You've set up a great mood and cut all pretense to the bone with this great tune.
Pillars of Eden (Right Between the Eyes) by Baboon 5 days ago
Lighters up, LongLines. Bab, your vocal tracks, I can't say enough, just right-on. Matt, that guitar! Jayman, even beyond the "numbers," the sum of your vision here is outstanding. The poetry bears repeated listens, it's what you left out that's got me mulling this over and over. The arrangement and mix/mastering presents the perfectly constructed puzzle... laminated, framed and hung on the wall in the wood-paneled "rec" room of my lost-in-the classic-rock-era mind.
Tangled Up in Blue (Bob Dylan cover) by Baboon 5 days ago
5

Oh, the groveling, you people! This isn't as livelargemusic said, "something much much more than it was before." This is pure evil, Bab, in fact it wins my vote for the 2008 "Most Evil Cover" award, blowing away any competition by miles. First off you took a sad song and made it better, ood-wie. How dare you. Second of all, those controversial all-counterpoint all-the-time keys, well, they're just menacing in that meth sense (see above).

On the other hand, if I erase all preconceptions of acoustic/folky sensitivity and take this for what it is, man is it ever well done, you dawg. Your voice and the effects work together are a polished gem. (Instead of Black Crowes I'd prefer to reach back to the original, Steve MArriot, that's just me.)

In the end, rising up from the controversy you've done what artists do, tweak my emotions, spur dialogue. And boy did you ever—just like that student's flag-burning installation at the Art Institute of Chicago—in 1989, was it? So yes, evil, and to be commended.

This may be the first I've heard of you here... sorry it took so long. Man, you've got it swinging all night long here, thanks to the caffeine and who knows how many martinis you've been drinking, virtually, of course. Snapping my fingers to this one.

Sinatra would be low-hanging "comparison fruit here." I'll go with Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" for inspiration. (Before the '70s primetime TV-cowboy sellout era.)

Ed, I still didn't get it right! I might have to re-do the slide (not used in this track). As for driving down from Johnson City, it was the least I could do to meet you a 10th of the way after all the hours you drove. Ed, It really was great to meet and hope we can do it again... in a music store?!

Thanks Ramona, Michael and Art... you don't have to call me one your faves, Art, to get me to come listening.

[EDITING TO ADD A NOTE ON THE GAME:] Now for all you "un-Americans" out there (as opposed to "anti-Americans" LOL) who may not know the game: It was played with plastic pegs and a board -- and calls on a grid (A-1 through J-10) that hid your ships from the other player. When Ed and I had our laptops together I said, "Hey, looks like a game of Battleship!" In the 1960s, the Milton Bradley Co. had TV adverts here in the states that popularized the tag-line: "You Sunk My Battleship!"

THERE ya go. Excellent attack, you definitely were in the mood to do some Strat damage here. Takes me to the woodshed. Something to aim for.

Compositionally, you set this up with a solid, hooky riff. As I listen I wonder of you'll come back to it and sure enough, you echo the theme when you hit the "4" in a very sweet way around 2/3rds through, followed by those Olympian bends and out to the end. Just tell me: what gauge? .09 on the high E? If I tried to do that with my current .10mm—I try, but I don't do that—I'd slice my ring-finger clear off. That would solve the problem of the wedding ring, but would really mess up my axe.

Hey, you could be famous with songs like this! (I know, I know.) Nicely done cover, a slightly poppier-but-superbly voiced , more clean-toned guitar than I recall the U2 tune (unless I just have distortion on the brain). Strings are subtle. Man, you've shown restraint here, and the delay sounds right on. The rhythm section--to your intro comment--sounds good to me; bass and kick boom but don't impede the other parts. Nice!

This reminds me of the early recordings I'd do in the late 70s, bouncing tracks between stereo cassette recorders... sound quality isn't there and I did want to reach in and grab your machine heads a couple of times, but it's still a moment worth capturing and sharing. I couldn't imagine how words could even fit into this short but great piece of music. I agree with woofer and Alan on the whiff of Tull, which is an entirely good thing. (BTW I saw them do a killer set of jazz standards at a show a few years ago!)

This story has the ring of "this could never happen," which makes it seem all the more plausible. The music, I have to admit, took a back seat to the prose. But please take my stars, because you held my interest well in this dual-medium format.

This is a nicely organized piece, kind of a cross between metal and jazz with its smooth keys and distortomatic parts. While you do have melody in here, it still might be cooler still with more up-front lead instrument on top. And I say that not to be negative, jsut to say there might be another version in the works if you want to do it.

Seriously, Mick. Art's right about your construction technique, nice build. If you care to shed some light on the effects and settings you're using to get that guitar tone, I'd be curious. Sounds like a light touch of chorus, delay and OD, and a few more sparingly-used ingredients?
Too Deep by UdoVelvet 11 days ago

Yup, nice tune and nice story of emotional detachment. I like the simple symmetry of "taking it to heart / taking it too deep" (if I heard that right) and the overall ease with which you deliver this. This has the groove of an old Feelies song, I can see you extending it a couple more minutes simply to continue the groove with some simple, melodic lead guitar notes... a very enjoyable groove.

I believe I know where you are in terms of not setting out to make "pretty" music. That can be as vapid as setting out as a painter to make "pretty" paintings. There's so much meat on the bones of your songs. Your voice and compositions shine like stars. My head still spins every time I listen to "Find My Voice."

One suggestion--not about your music but the "liner notes" is to let us know where the great instrumentation comes from. It's so refreshing... doesn't sound like loops. Sounds like true talent. And yes, I am slighting loops and loop users in saying this--including myself! There's nothing like real live human beings making music.

I've sung "better get back to Genessee, Ted" ever since OD-ing to this song (?!) when I attended Syracuse U. back in the 70s (and caught some shows in upstate NY to boot).

The Days I'm There [For Maya, for Autumn] by Bob6stringer 12 days ago
Thanks, thanks, thanks and thanks! To feenixx: It's not technically a global Master-track fadeout, but it's close to it; Good point...I'll keep that point in mind going forward. To all:: Here's a breakdown of the simple A > B > A+B structure:

A SECTION: The pieces of chords in the main staccato/pinced-strings section here, used in few different inversions and with hammer-ons, spell-out two patterns (which I will defined better with guitar or bass if I or WE do a rock-collab version):
--> Dmaj7 - G / Dmaj7 - G
--> Dmaj7 - G / F#m - Em

B SECTION: The section with the Bonham-esque rock drum loop uses open strings mainly with a two-octave base using the low-E and D strings... similar to the refrain of Led Zep's Four Sticks (which I almost threw in as a fade i/out coda at the end!).

You can see the basic parts as I fret them at the video link in the song intro notes.

John--Dr. Hook, This is as good as any track you've ever shared, a pretty staggering accomplishment. Great American Heartland Rock. But I owe you a better comment than my usual "oh, you're so great!" fare. So...

Lewin Barringer has a formidiable, professional ear. His comment on tweaking-up the reverb on the vox gave me pause to listen actively. I can se the point but can see leaving it as is for the effect it provides: The vox seems to have a smaller room/club reverb than the stadium/cathedral the drums are in. This gives the effect of a band on a very deep trapezoidal stage--the lead singer is up front with less reverberation room, while the drums are in the large, back end. This gives the sonic equivalent of a fishbowl camera lens.

I might be al wrong on the use of different reverbs; in GarageBand, the MAster Track typically defines the entire project's reverb type (though you can always export, change settings, etc.). Then again, I don't know how it works in Sonar.

Art, this is a very fat production, I don't know how you can do all you can deliver such great guitar while also focusing on the whole big production. Pretty amazing result, no matter how you do it. I always come back to guitar... I have to applaud your inventiveness and tone. Really ripped the lid off this one. There's a really strange "head" in this, a kind of surreal warble on the harmonies that's both faithful and suits yoru lead vocal delivery well.

You be da preacher man for us aging guitar geezers.

Sort of a postwar Floydian update on the old Roger Waters Wall feel... authority marching, a wasteland, etc., etc.

Nicely rounded out in the production. I'm listening on in-ear V-modas and I have to say that your sub-bottom (kick drum?) comes very close to the punch in the gut you get with real speakers on a good old-fashioned stereo... remember Cerwin Vegas in the 70s? Anyway, really nice.

Now that it's partly out of my system I'll tell you in hindsight what I think influenced this: Nick cave and the bad seeds; the lead-less rhythm riffing of latter Gang of Four and Talking Heads, a touch of Fred from the B-52's, Frank Zappa's cartoonish "Overnight Sensation"

Meantime, at my Virtual Garage, I have another, "kinder" tune tune tentatively titled, "She Didn't Give Her Domain," in progress. Please comment on this one here or that one there if you wish to lend an ear.

Smoovy -- smooth and groovin. I'll pile on the bass compliments. But everything is just right in the pocket. High end sounds a little like old analog tape wow/flutter. But that adds a retro vibe.

ROFLMAO on this one for your forced inspiration... which sometimes is just the shove you need to push you to get the studio ideas flowing. I like the anti-diva attitude you put out in your vocal delivery. This is my first listen to your music; I'll be back to hear more for sure.

[EDITED: Oops... I almost forgot... here, have some stars!]

Lie KC says, cool and bluesy. I had a good time learning to count to six while digging this groove. Nice ambient keys to add some backing color, and I like the jazzed-blues vocal delivery just fine.

Repost--quick--good start, but the track goes silent after the intro!

Cool, clean, elegant and unfettered. Sometimes it's the quick inspiration that leads you to that place. Beautiful acoustic guitar arrangement in the chorus and tasteful keys interspersed. Pro sound. What more can I say?

Just beautiful. So glad to discover you, if a few years later than I'd have liked. I checked your blog and see that you were away for a while, recently back. that explains why you weren't on my radar. Now that you're in my view, I'll be sure to listen to more, soon.

Where did you come from? When did you come from? I can't believe you've been here since 2005 and this is the first track of yours I've heard. Your voice shines like a diamond and the whole production is absolutely, perfectly buttoned-down.

Also perfect: that well-placed scat break.

To Mick and others who accuse me of hypocrisy on covers: I kow, I know, I know! But WAIT! I just got my foot out of my mouth! And WHAT WILL COME OUT OF MY MOUTH NEXT? More heresy: I still think iComps should outlaw covers for which we haven't gained permission (like this one!) image

I'm listening intently. I might surprise you one day when I get caught up on some work and other collab debts. I can see having lots of fun, worrying if I'm burying all that lead bass and alternately mirroring it with notes an octave and/or two above yours. Interesting...

Politically I'm more on the left. (There really is no left in the U.S. as I see it, it's all very relative). But I respect your effort to make a more universal appeal here.

The real shame of this war from the U.S.--really I should say my--perspective is that it's been incredibly selfish. We sent all these kids off to learn to be killing machines, and we citizens didn't sacrifice anything at all. That has come back to haunt us as a nation in so many ways since it started.

Highly Klezmatic of you. Ms. Ruby/Elaine--Mazel Tov! This has the feel of the vintage Andrews take. I'll assume the backing tracks are off the shelf... no matter, a great way to highlight your vocal chops.

This is a very listenable and upbeat piece. Nice tune, love the guitar tone and overall hookiness and pacing of it. Your studio work here is clean and lively. You're a year older than me here... I look forward cruisin' into my fourth and your 5th, woodman.

The First Time by fatchance 26 days ago
Oh my aching soul, my beating heart. Such a lush song, and production. A great work of love for an urge that's primal but in this finely crafted iteration rises to the level of spiritual. Both versions are absolutely amazing.

RE: the iC boilerplate that ratings are disabled and "constructive comments would be appreciated," I have no criticism whatsoever.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Your vocals reminds me of the dead-on pitch smoothness of Rufus Wainwright, as does the production. As good as it is, I can't wait to hear what FatChance does with this, it's hard to imagine much improvement.
The Troll's Cabaret by JackFancy 26 days ago
This will sound entirely left-field and old-school but I imagine you singing extremely this hung-over after an all-night binge in an illegal poker tournament, and you're a cross between Ian Anderson ("strapping mad" line) and David Bowie ("whole year spent" line). crooning for a few coins in your tin cup, then taking your rest in a back alley, resting comfortably on a couch of trash bags next to a dumpster. (That couch, btw, is pretty comfortable when you're drunk--I slept in one just like it in New Orleans in one trip there in 1985.)

And oh, yeah: GREAT SONG WRITING AND PERFORMANCE.
Astronaughty (For US Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak) by artneuro 26 days ago
This is great, just great. I just found the later Coelecanth version of this and decided to compare the two. This is a great demo. But it's still a robotic arm vs. the complete shuttle of the band version. I want my Coelecanth--reform and move to the U.S., won't you?

There's such a great, ethereal and ephemeral--otherworldly and short-lived--feeling you give that psycho astronut, and this song. It's got the feeling of those old postwar sputnik/Atomic Age film noir flying saucer movies, but with an updated musical approach. I don't know how to explain it, but my jibbering goes still further out-there in my comment on the full-band Coelecanth version of this tune...
Astronaughty (For US Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak) by Coelacanth 26 days ago
This is really neato-strange. And so is my experience with it. Having missed the original demo by Art, I listened to that first--just great, and produced well--and then clicked here to hear something that reminded me of the smooth vocals of the Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac (the Bare Trees" album with "Sentimental Lady" and "Hypnotized" smiley. Then I looked up Bob Welch and--guess what--he's a total space nut. If you go to his Web site, it's littered with talk of UFOs and NASA denials, etc., etc.

And that brought me home to give this another listen. What a great band, this ancient fish of yours.
The Rain Is in My Brain by Bob6stringer 27 days ago
Thanks all o' the above and Ponk, you've given me something to chew on. I've been stylistically all over the map and most of those styles aren't necessarily on record here. Your comment leads me to believe that I might actually have something worth mining further here--a harder-edged collection using this "persona" and this would be the mellow side. Hmm...

Good to hear you singin' it this time. It's amazing how the groove can be this slow, but when done right, the groove just deepens to compensate. It's sometimes hard for all of us to realize that a good performance, good commitment to the material, can bring it all alive. Even--especially--for those who can capture the feel of ol' Muddy Waters. [EDITING TO ADD: Nice production paradox: You've got spectacular recording clarity here yet you still maintain a strong sense of dirty delta mud in these tracks.]

I don't have any quarters to throw in the bucket but here--have a pocketful of stars. Sweet blues, fine harp as ever. Was this done by Sonny Boy Williamson? Anyway, I agree with you on the coin-noise: it's acceptable. if you mention them in "liner notes," any blues lover will understand that this is happening in the real world. In fact, they add a touch of authenticity. And to think, you didn't have to find a sample, it was the real thing!
