This is cool. I really liked the chanting style at the beginning (I guess that was the Hebrew?). I think the chanting over the double time bass guitar is something new and special.

I think there's too much going on here for me to follow the song. By the time the spoken word Japanese comes in, you've lost me. I would love to hear more of the chanting/metal combination, with breaks for the lead guitar / atmospheric sound. You've really got something there..

This is a cool "soundtracky" kind of piece. Would be good driving music.

Since you asked for some notes on mixing..

I think it's a little busy and there's not enough separation between the tracks. If you want it to be more 'clubby', you should introduce each element separately, i.e. have the drums come in clean followed by the bass, and then add each synth, and be a little bit more careful about having too many different elements going on at any given time.

As far as EQ, I would pull the bass track and the kick drum, and double them with a nice low-pass filter and kick up the bass on the EQ so that you get that nice booming sub-bass kind of sound to fill out the mix. You could break down to just the bass

lot of good songs this week, but this would get my vote for #1. it's the most current and i wouldn't blink if you told me it was off the latest massive attack or hooverphonic album..

my one constructive point would be that it could use a little more space between the vocal phrases, maybe a breakdown like what happens at the end earlier in the song, or to deconstruct a bit to some dry drums in the middle somewhere.. minor note, just thought that might help.

cheers, great stuff.

i really like hearing complete songs like this on icomp with a nice hook, chorus, and bridge. (mine are always missing 1 it seems smiley 5 stars.

everything sounds professional to me except the production on the vocals which sounds a bit thin. don't get me wrong, the production is very high in general and i dig the song. with a bit more warmth on the vox i could hear it on classic rock radio for sure.. great work.

SECOND CHANCE BLUES by Barretok 5 years ago

Barre, enough with the talking, you need to sing, brother!

Top marks for a seriously rippin' electric blues number. Anders, you definitely have the gift. Are you playing out at blues clubs? You should be.

But in my opinion, this song really needs a huge singing voice to pair up with the guitar (even if it's just for a chorus or two). The spoken word stuff pushes it more in an experimental direction, while traditionally a blues number like this would have big howling singing along with it...

this is hot guys! reminds me of MC Solar / Guru's hit song from some years ago.

i'd love to hear some r&b sounding vocals for a hook.

love the elec guitar. i think it could be used more in the song and there could be less pads/synths/elec piano. those elements make it a little less current sounding for me. i'd like to hear the music in more of a trip-hop direction.

very sweet song guys! keep 'em coming.

p.s. - could someone post a translation of the lyrics? pretty please??

Thanks guys. Look at that, we're on the charts!

I should say that these lyrics were written for my girlfriend (everybody now: "Awwwww!")). She was feeling a bit down and unsure of things so I wrote her this little love song.

Also I should again credit Krista on the vocals and Shu on guitar. I'm so lucky to have these two. If anyone can come down and see us live on Thursday that would be so cool (details above). I will totally buy a shot of tequila for any iComper who shows up at the gig!

ORANGE skin or 'Jesus was watching me' by ORANGEAUDIO 5 years ago

Coming back with style! Nice job Tommy. The vocal samples really kick it up a notch. I love when you start chopping up the guitar and playing with the order of the hits.

What you need to develop on this one is the dynamic contrast between the sections. Build up the beat more in the beginning so that once we hit the break-down, it's more of a relief. Then in the break-down, go with some legato chords or pads and maybe in a different key to keep building the mood.

I give it 5 stars in the iComp context, but I think if you worked on it a bit more it could be lounge/dance complilation worthy..

But never mind all that. Get to work on our new hit! smiley /cham
Blackwood Swing by phigga 5 years ago

I like this since it's 'real music' i.e. live instruments and no loops. I like the style and tone of the vocals, but the lead voice is pitchy in parts. Were all the parts recorded live at the same time? If not maybe go back and work on getting each instrument to occupy a particular space in the mix.. And do one more take on the lead vox.

It's great to see people doing real recordings with GB. This sounds cool, I would go see this band..

Keep up the good work. /Chamberlain

fantastic, some real music. bravo. i'd love to see a little more dynamic variation. i know the avant-gard thing is to just blast away for the entire song, but i think a little more stucture would make it more accessible if in fact that's what you're going for. also i would throw in some super fast rolls and backwards drum hits to take it away from the branford marsalis sound and make it a bit more drum & bass ala amon tobin.

again great tune.

Hey, wow this is some great feedback, cheers to everyone for stopping by and giving a listen. The more I listen to it, the more I think this song needs some variation in the chords. I think I may go back to the drawing board a little bit and change the voicing in the chorus and add a bridge..

The vocal tracks are doubled with a touch of echo on one track and some different EQ's (still learning how to do this from an Ian R recommendation - thanks Ian..) Keep the comments coming, I'll make a list and then we'll post the final mix! -steve

Moonshine Fiasco by ORANGEAUDIO 5 years ago
some constructive notes:

instead of switching between parts that are so different, i think you need to stick with one style and add some chord changes. the drums (as always) are superb, but there wasn't enough structure to the song to hold my attention. i liked the almost depeche-mode sounding synth guitar riff. maybe stick with that but add some choruses and a bridge.

(i'm being very critical because you're my favorite!)

-steve

p.s. i did some more recording over one of your tracks this weekend. get psyched!
Too Long To Chill by easyesteemer 5 years ago
Nice one Easy. I'm a sucker for a good rhodes riff. But where did it go? I'd def bring back the piano, might help to structure the piece a bit too and carve out coherent sections. Also one more constructive note, the synths were a tiny bit DX7 for my taste, maybe just pull back the highs a little bit or add some distortion..

This piece is very Miami Vice (my favorite soundtracks ever were from this show). I mean really if we could wouldn't we all be Don Johnson cruising in a 400k ferrari wearing an Italian suit with the sleeves rolled up?? smiley good job /killpage

Hey everyone. Thanks so much for all the great comments & support! I heard this track from Tommy (the original is here: http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=28610) and I was very inspired by it. Tommy has such a gift for rhythm and texture. Thanks for letting me take a crack Tommy! I wrote some arrangements and brought in my friend Christo Logan who is a classically trained cellist to play those beautiful string lines (thanks Christo!!!). You can also hear my 1979 Fender Rhodes on here and I added some synth & bass from GB. (By the way everything was recorded stereo mic'd straight into GB). I thought it would be nice to stay with the Little Daughter theme (by the way, she's adorable), so these lyrics came to me. I just got the chance to bring Krista in to the studio this weekend, what a beautiful voice! We recorded two tracks, I'll post the other one soon. I'm also going to take a crack at another of Tommy's songs, probably in a few weeks. Really enjoyed this collaboration. Keep up the great work Tommy and everyone else. You all have a great community here at iComp, I'm happy to be included. Give the baby girl a kiss for me.

Tommy, who knew you had such a great voice?? You should sing on more of your songs.

My only suggestion is that this song sounds a bit like two ideas strung together. The first is like a video game soundtrack, and the second sounds like a depeche mode song (those are both compliments!), maybe you'd think about arranging the song with vocals at the beginning and then an instrumental part for the bridge to make it a bit more cohesive?

Anyway really enjoyed it. Keep it up!
6 and a half minutes of relaxation by ORANGEAUDIO 6 years ago
ah, i needed that. thanks tommy. a nice counterpoint to the hustle-bustle-muscle of nyc.

as far as constructive criticism, this piece would totally work as a soundtrack or ambient element for some visual media. otherwise it could work as a clubby/lounge song if you added some percussion elements. try taking a d&b/techno/2step kind of beat and applying a hipass filter so that it's real thin and in the upper register, push it down low in the mix, and you'd have the soundtrack to every hip bar in downtown manhattan smiley.

bravo mon ami, keep at it.
