"Have Songs Will Travel"

Clay Potts was born to entertain and in many circles he's considered the BEST in the business.
His first professional gig was at age 13. Initially attracted to the roots-rock sound of Elvis Presley and Little Richard, Clay soon discovered the electrified big-city blues music indigenous to New York.
Not content with viewing the scene from the audience, Potts was known to leap onto the stage, asking if he could sit in as he simultaneously sang harmony with the greats.
Potts was quickly accepted in the city, as much for his ability as for the audiences' appreciation of the hot sound. It was quite the novelty seeing a young white singer in a part of town where few whites were seen.
In addition to playing with the established stars of the day,he began to search out older, forgotten bluesmen, playing and recording with Charley Schmeyer, Eddie Cubano, Little Onion Jackson and Big Boy Lenclad, among others. Potts's vocal work as a backup singer caught the ear of the great singer/songwriter Jerry Dycke and producer "Sweet" Dickie Lyle, who flew to New York and immediately signed him to a recording contract with Candlelight Records. Unfortunately Candlelight was sold soon which left Clay without a record deal.
In 1988 he was in St. Louis, where he met radio DJ Mordecai Brown who helped in getting Clay signed to a contract with Felton Records. He stayed with Felton for 7 years, recording such blues hits as "Baby, Please Get Out of My Life" and "Crawlin' Thru The Mud To You". He cut over 300 songs on the Felton label and when it was sold to MelTone Records, he stayed on. Today he is their number one artist. A gifted songwriter, many of his self produced albums are considered masterpieces.
Clay remained a noted blues artist thru the 1990s, with his stylish vocals becoming popular with folk-blues fans. In 2001 he put the blues aside for a more Cabaret style of music. This was a major turning point in his career. He became a regular on the concert and coffeehouse circuits, developing a legion of loyal fans.
Today he continues to please audiences. Creating joy through music is what Clay Potts lives for.
