My Father's Waltz by JodyGrenier 4 years ago

I can hear no trace of the anger you mention in your description over your dad's lost youth; all I hear is love and warmth, a testament to both your feelings about the man and your compositional skill. It has a nostalgic feel, as though it could have been written 60-100 years ago... timeless! Very pretty, and very moving.

Just jumping in here to say (a) huge thanks to all for having a listen and leaving comments, and (b) in response to the reference to MOTU in the comment by Filmscorz, I should clarify that I use their notation software (Mosaic; they orphaned it 10 years ago!) and sequencing software (Digital Performer) to generate a score and audio version of the music, but in this case, what you are hearing is a live performance using I don't know what, but maybe Pro Tools, as the recording software. Since it is a live performance, and since they only rehearsed it for about 10 minutes (or less!) before recording it, there are a few places where all did not go exactly right, but they nevertheless did a fantastic job with it, so I was pleased.

Thanks again for checking this out, and if I haven't already done so I'll make sure to listen to your music and leave a comment in the near future!

Realy nice playing! For me, it seems like you take it to a new level around the point (or just before it) where those repeated notes start hapening; everything after that just seems a little more locked in, or something, and I am blown away at how good it is. I'm not sure what you're using to generate your accompanying tracks, but it might be very cool if you could vary them more, especially in the piano, and maybe even let the piano take a solo at some point... just a suggestion. Overall, this is really good, with some awsome soloing.

Busy busy busy! I see all kinds of busy creatures moving about in a busy and possibly manic way... very visual! And utterly delightful. I love it!

This is extremely arousing, as indeed are all references to waterfowl!

Nice writing, and an expressive oboe line. You get a lot of mileage out of the repeated i-iv-i-iv etc. progression, but if you wanted to take this further you might need to expand your harmonic pallette. Overall, very restful and atmospheric. Good job!
Prelude BWV1010 by tollimees 4 years ago
Is this your own transcription? I have been playing classical guitar for 36 years, and, unbelievably, I have never heard this prelude done on the guitar! So it is a treat for me to hear this, thank you. By the way, I have never come across any references to Bach having any problems with alcohol; it seems unlikely, given his amazing record of productivity and high quality.

Aha! You are here! As always, you play with passion and tremendous virtuosity. Beautiful tune.

Familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, and beautiful touch on the piano. Love the bass and the other sounds you have too. Great job!

Beautfiful and atmospheric; you're getting that (modal) Miles sound. I'm curious about the piano miking... it sounds kind of distant, as if it has its own reverberant space, separate from the ensemble (i.e. like it's in a different room). The main thing that catches my ear here is the trumpet playing; really good feel and sound you've got.

Very intense! Love the atmosphere; seems like it could be in an epic film. People travelling over some vast, bleak landscape... that's the kind of image I get. Good stuff!

Wow, does this ever exude a smoky/bluesy/soulful atmosphere! You have a great singing voice, and this sounds completley professional. Fantastic!

Nice song, and it tells an unusual story. You have a really good voice, and it sells the song/story well. While I agree with others that is not muddy, it does strike me as being possibly a bit "busy" at times, like possibly you are trying to throw too much into this, which might possibly detract the listener from focussing on the song's main assets, which are your voice and the story you tell with it. Just my opinion, and it seems to be out of step with everyone else's, so feel free to ignore it!

This is fantastic! I love your free and easy style, and there were some exceptionally cool chords in there. I could listen to this all day. Or at least I could if I didn't have kids, a job etc... Wonderful.

Such lovely music. So open, and positive... you communicate so much through your music.

Terrific track! Impressive guitar playing here, reminding me a bit of George Benson in a Steely Dan-ish sort of way... if that makes any sense. I'm really impressed.

Well, I've commented on this elsewhere, but one thing I missed before was that you said this was mostly improvised... This amazes me! I am curious as to how you go about improvising something like this. Did you start with some sense of a melody in your head, and then improvise all the harmony parts? (hmm... I'm brand new here, and I just noticed that I seem to be making a much wordier comment than anyone else... sorry about that!)

Okay; here's a shorter version: Wow! "Mostly improvised"? But how?

... You mean there's life outside of Mj's? I saw your post about this song there, so I came to have a listen, and signed up so I could leave a comment. Here's my comment:

This is unbelievably great. I am blown away by your musicianship; very tastefully done. I hope Mungo hears this. I miss the guy already. Anyway, anything by you is always terrific, so thanks for letting us (at MJ's) know about this.
