Arabian Twilight by gennargiu 5 years ago

I love it. I'm reminded not so much of an Arabian Twilight, but of my early days as a composer making heavy use of the GB loops in unconventional ways, and I've got to say you hit the nail on the head with this track, with a perfect balance between the loops and homemade bits. I've noticed that when a person gets either their own synth or begins to create their own instruments in GB, it becomes very difficult to make good use of the prebuilt loops. Incredible job combining the two; I completely gave up on 95% of the loops when I started to tweak with the synth instruments.

It's almost a bit Civilization III-ish. Makes me want to go play Civ3 now. As a matter of fact, I think I will.

It wasn't terrible, but the clash between the piano and the pad at the beginning just about drove me insane with the detuning. I love your concept for a "retro-style" track, hence the four star creativity vote, but the production could've used quite a bit more work.

A correction I would like to make in writing is that there were Garageband loops used in the construction of this song, but only to achieve the sound effects at the beginning and end of the song, as well as a few ambience hits in the middle, such as a certain big booming rumble. However, when one sees the Loop Use as "Some Loops", the human mind tends to automatically calculate for 50% loops and I do not want this confusion. Needless to say, the song could do perfectly fine without any of the used loops and still hold its entire self-sustaining glory, but I just wanted to set the record straight.

The opening sound, the somewhat creepy almost grating of metal and voice, was one of the abstract atmosphere effects in the jam pack 1 loops, if I'm not mistaken.

(Added): I'm on my PeeCee right now, so I don't have access to GB in order to pursue an adequate search.

If anybody enjoys the power loop that the song begins with, simple say so and I'll post it as a free loop!
Megaman Zero 2 - Zero's Theme by David Easthope 6 years ago
The song cuts off abruptly for two reasons:

A) The original loops right after that point, meaning that if you download the song and play it through quicktime on loop it sounds fine.

B) As I stated in the description, my rendition of the song is incomplete, but I often post incomplete "samples" so that I can have it judged before I post the final thing.
Over There by aktm 6 years ago

All my 5 are belong to you, dude! This song is by far the best non-vocal metal song I've ever heard, and I usually listen to it right right after I rock out to 2 Minutes to Midnight by Iron Maiden, and this one still sounds better. Keep it up, I just can't wait for the next one!

Planet Metal just keeps getting better and better. Loved this one, but my favorite is still "Over There". The change of drums is excellent, although I think I might've changed the secondary drum loop you used after the opening; it kinda made the crash cymbals fall into the background a bit. That's only if I'd written the song though, and I could never make anything to parallel this one.

Great work! I can't wait to hear your next creation!

A point I must add after listening to the entire second loop of the song: The note pitches seem to be start out of alignment the second time through, so just ignore it until I figure out why it didn't correct them like I told it to in GB.

Awesome song. Love the guy talking about the cowbell prescription for his "fever". Cowbell sounds good, if not a little canned at some parts. smiley
Annihilator by David Easthope 7 years ago
Should've written this a long time ago, but for anyone wondering: Most of the loops that I used in this song were taken from the Soundtrack library, as both Soundtrack and GarageBand use Apple Loops. That big metal banging effect that pans left and right was originally set to do that in Soundtrack, and then I made it into an aif file and imported it into GB. Same goes for a few of the synths that pan around.
Megaman X3 - Toxic Seahorse by David Easthope 7 years ago
Urg. I've lost the original .band file for this one, and now I'm kicking myself for it. I cannot remember how to get that tight sound with the guitars, and all my recent attempts to recreate it have failed. If anyone else out there has duplicated such an effect, please tell me how it is done again!
Unreal Tournament 2000 - Mission Landing by David Easthope 7 years ago
If anyone wants to know how to do that cool, almost reverse effect with the strings, just use the Hollywood Strings, and set the attack and the release to the left as far as they'll go.

those are all loops straight from garageband. glad you liked it!
Wide Awake at Midnight by David Easthope 7 years ago
Thanks for the advice! There's actually going to be a finalized version posted once I can play it right. It was midnight when I posted this (hence the name), and me and my saxophone were stuck in a loop rut, so I just posted it and said I'd finish it later.

Stay tuned!

Emotion by mhillman159 7 years ago
I've done so many reviews today, so I think I'll overlook giving ratings to the next few songs I listen to. It's good, though. I've always liked using the Emotional Piano loops, which sound surprisingly good when added to a techno-style song. Kinda funny with the drum loop changes, though. I'm just picturing a live performance of this song, with three different drummers and drumkits on a turntable in the center of the stage, which rotates to bring the next drummer to the front when they change. lol. Don't sweat it, though. The song sounds good. It could use an ending, though...

I've made it my new policy to never post something like "Make it better", so my recommendations for this one would be to maybe just increase the speed by maybe 5 beats per minute, as the Apple loops seem to get distorted and out of sync when played this slow in their non-native key. Also, I've never heard the funky pop synth you used at the beginning played at that speed (I also have a song that starts with it, but at 130 bpm). It becomes a totally different thing. Aside from the sync issues with GarageBand, the song is great! I've actually put it on one of my CDs, because it makes great easy listening music around the house.

Oh yeah, forgot one thing:
Myopic said "nicely played", but I must inform all of you reading this that not one part of the song is real. [color:green]This entire song is MIDI channeled through the GarageBand software instruments.

It feels so good to be a member of the GB "minor leagues", as I guess you could call them. I just got back from reading through the constant bombardment that is Ric Perrot's reviews section for Here Comes the Sun, and saw these very simple comments left on my song. Somehow though, these very simple and short words seem to have more power then any of the slander on RicP's HCTS review page. Thanx guys.

After reading through all of these reviews, I couldn't help but wonder when music became a competition on this website. When I sit down in front of my G5, and fire up GarageBand, I'm not planning to write the summer's greatest rock and roll hit, or to produce some technofunk that people around the globe listen to daily.

My brother Brian (Also featured on this site) spends almost all of his time just counting up his play numbers, and never really tries to write anything new anymore. Every one of his songs uses the same percussion line now, with the same piano thrown somewhere in the middle, just so that he can post the song and hope someone will listen to it and increase his numbers. We're all too involved in the number game, and it completely clouds our ability to recognise music in its truest form.

[color:red]Music should be an expression of what we are and what we like to do, not just a competition of numbers. My rating here is based mostly upon the reviews themselves, primarily upon the post where Ric Perrot explains that this was just the result of four hours of fun, and wasn't meant to take over the music industry or anything like that. He was having fun, and I beleive that the instant you're capable of producing something that you had fun creating, THAT is the true moment in which you have succeeded.

As for constructive advice...
I noticed that about halfway through listening, there were some really good harmonies coming from somewhere. Then I realized that I was singing along. Have you ever considered adding an extra vocal track to the song, singing the harmony line just above the melody, maybe a third or a fifth up?

Remember: There is no such thing as a bad song. There are songs, and then there are songs that continue to improve on themselves. I would urge you all to only post comments that can assist in the improvement of songs. Comments that do nothing but say it needs remixing, or needs to "suck less", are completely worthless and do not help in the creative process at all.

If you're not helping, then you're in the way!

Keep on trying. They'll learn someday...
