Chicago Shuffle Blues by FrankAxtell 4 months ago
Thanks so much for the kind words my friends. The track was recorded using my early 1970's Black Gibson Les Paul Custom, my first real guitar I purchased, new as a 13 old kid. I remember it cost me $529 new at that time... mucho dinero! ...now a new one will set you back about $3400. I used an Xotic RC Booster into the amp, a HW 59 Marshall Superlead 100 watt reissue with a David Bray mod 1... into a Marshall 4x12 cab with vintage Celestion 30's. I recorded using SM57 mic into a Presonus Firepod and finally Logic 7.1.
That Marshall/ Lester combo is hard to beat!

Thanks so much...I'm just trying to get away from the current trends in guitar music...I think keyboardist/composer Joe Zawinul was always one of the most innovative musicians of our time. I am very influenced by his works and I'm a very big fan. So I guess this piece was a reflection on that influence. Thanks again for your comment.

In response to your questions about my guitar and recording gear...

Hardware used:
1982 '62 re-issue Fender strat loaded with 1968 Fender strat pickups and electronics, Xotic RC Booster, Xotic BB Preamp, A/B box, 1974 Marshall JMP MK II 50 watt half stack with 1970 vintage Marshall 4x12 slant cab, Peavey 5150 with 4x12 1960ax Marshall cab, both cabs loaded with 25 watt Celestion greenbacks, EC-132 C Takamine nylon string guitar, Magami gold tip guitar cables, 2 Shure SM57 mics, Presonus Firepod, Mac Dual 2.7 Ghz Power PC, Logic Pro 7.1.1, Glyph GT 050 250 GB drive, Mackie HR 824 High Resolution Studio Monitors, AKG K240DF headphones and an old Korg 01/WFD synth as my keyboard controller. All synths and effects done in Logic Pro.

Both amps are cranked up pretty loud in a separate room mics are about an inch from the grill cloth just off center.
The New Jerusalem by FrankAxtell 8 months ago
On this piece I wanted to keep the focus on the guitar as being the feature and let the synth patches take a back seat roll. Thanks for listening.

I've included a revised gear list above for all you gear heads.
Space Jazz by FrankAxtell 9 months ago
This was an experiment recording both my JMP Marshall Mark II 50 watt half stack and Fender Vibro King together at the same time...the volume levels were cranked up pretty high. SM57 mics were placed about 6" from the amp grills at a 45 degree angle on both the upper speakers of the 1970 Marshall 4x12 cab and Vibro King 3 10" speaker / 60 watt combo amp. I also placed a SM57 into the rear open back Vibro King. All 3 mics onto separate tracks in Logic Pro. I also used a Cry Baby wah, Arion SCH-1 chorus, BB preamp and RC booster together with my 82 strat equiped with 1968 Fender pickups and electronics.

Thanks for all the positive feedback...just to let you know these recording are just experiments in guitar tone and microphone placement so they are not serious completed tunes.
I have been tweaking guitar tones for the last couple of months and just stumbled over this one using my Arion SCH-1 chorus pedal along with the Xotic RC booster and BB preamp. I call that pedal the wiggler. Got hip to that old cheap 80's pedal through Scott Henderson and master West Palm Beach guitar tech Steve Siciliano. Both the Marshall and Vibro King are turned up pretty high. You got to crank them to achieve that natural power amp tube compression. On those long sustained notes I kicked in the Carl Martin compressor just for that little extra but off it goes when playing the sixteenth notes. Mike Landau is my main influence when I comes to players of today, but Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies is my all time favorite guitar tone album. Thanks again...nice to know some people are aware of good old style Marshall/ Fender tube tone. I have a ton of gear and so far it's still the old stuff that sounds the best...if it's not broke don't fix it!
