"A Mobius Strip" by abzwork 11 days ago
I like the "clean" guitar sounds, especially the brief acoustic; the power of the outside pentatonic! The echo groove effect on the drums is also intriguing. I hadn't thought of the musical analog for a mobius strip before but now that I think about it, it seems possible, from rhythmic notions like "turning the beat around" to harmonic/melodic: a succession of thirds repeating after 2 octaves, of fourths every 3 octaves etc. not sure that the picture is of a mobius strip though, wouldn't it have to have a twist? It's great to check back and hear what you've been up to and to hear more of your guitar voice in your music, it shows your musicality in a most immediate way... Many thanks for stretching, bending and twisting our ears, here at iComp!

"A Cup Of You" by abzwork 3 months ago
Dig the down tempo back beat twelve, yes, the vocal samples are tantalizing as is the chordal pad. I feel the bass line needs to be simplified though: non chord tones, let alone "outside" notes, need to be approached and resolved with care, especially in a bass line, IMHO... I do enjoy listening to your music and hope you don't mind my opinions. smiley smiley

"A Day In The Park" by abzwork 3 months ago
Love the singing analog guitar with the whammy drops the best, singing through the strings, you can hear it through the acoustic as well. A suggestion would be to slow the progressions down and let us orient our ears to the tonality by dwelling longer. By use of counterpoint the chords can become incredibly complex and voice motion becomes hard to track for any length of time. Sound is perceived as louder if it is preceded by silence. Density or speed of motion is more dramatic if it is built up to with sparse and slow sounds. These ideas are especially true with the bass voice whose most satisfying moments are pinning down the tonality in some sort of groove pocket. I am in awe of your output, I can't even keep up with the listening hehe, let alone producing a song every couple of days!

Love the bass (of course) and sax. Cool structure with the chill bit in the middle. Not to be critical but the "bell" is a little hot for my taste: would get more propulsion from a classic African bell rhythm in the background or a cáscara eg. Also would like to hear more harmonic build by holding back on the 12 tone sound a bit as it would be all the more powerful when it comes in. For instance: start with more pure pentatonic, move gradually to more density. Hope you don't mind my opinions being vented, great job over all. I admire your productivity, your pieces never fail to be fascinating to the ear... I'd like to hear more on your methodology too as your ears are so far along, I guess it speaks to the multi instruments taking one along multi paths - melodic, rhythmic, harmonic etc.

Interesting chromatic melody, singing is classical in nature, behind the beat and with a gentle attack and swell. There seems to be a little reverb on the instruments and less on the vocals which makes them seem more forward in the mix. Thanks for sharing, all the best, mre

@pharmakeus: Chris, thanks as always for your listen and comments. With your leave, I'll explain the counting in as sanguine and least torturous fashion as possible:
15/8 is half a beat short of 2 bars of 4/4, the grouping is as follows: 1&2&3& 1&2&3&4&5 | 1&2&3& 1&2&3&4&5 | ...
notice there is no "&" on the 5th beat of the second group

@shadow thanks for dropping by, don't worry it took me 38 years to figure out...

Yes, we exist in a realm of balance of opposites whose stability depends on this precarious equilibrium ~ perhaps that is why we see so many paradoxes around us. "Pearl" -- a Chinese Les Paul by pharmakeus 4 months ago
I have a The Paul with Di-Marzio pickups which i swapped but I took the bridge one out and swapped for a tele pickup for a hybrid sound, had to make a mini teak mounting plate to convert the single coil to fit in the humbucker hole. It's also fitted with a Washburn surface mount tremelo that bolts into the pickup and tailpiece inserts. My friend Grant has an ES-339, a small bodied semi acoustic that looks like the 335. He raves about the replacement nut by Earvana that compensates for tuning imperfections, similar to the way the bridge saddles do for better intonation all the way up the neck...

A unique axe to be sure! Amazing psychedelic paint job and surf ready with the tremelo arm. By "semi-acoustic" do you mean the body has a block to help sustain and prevent feedback? Yeah, it's on the big speakers... I love the way the acoustic drum riff shows up (is that played live)? You have an interesting concept, my friend, the rhythmic and tonal intricacies are fascinating and display great accomplishment. If I may make a suggestion: larger form could be constructed with a contrasting section 3/5'ths or so along (golden mean), this is pretty jagged and "crazy", you have put a break in there, but how about extending that with a smooth floaty legato part which makes the return to the initial groove a great homecoming!
"Fries And A Shake" by abzwork 4 months ago

Groove For RG by mre 4 months ago
Thanks for all the encouraging comments... @ multimuse: yes, all the instruments were played into a multi track recorder, the uke tracks were played independently off the bass rhythm track then combined and disagreeable notes edited out.
I am not sure of the drum part as it lurches a little in places and the whole track, I think, peaks too soon. I have begun working on it as a performance piece with my guitar player bandmate Grant; it's a fun jam piece. Hopefully a re-record incorporating improvements from lessons learned will approach a "definitive" rendition.
