This is a really good song, and you sing it quite well. I bet it would be spectacular to work it up with full instruments. If you decide to do it, I'd be interested in collaborating. Good job, Kate!

Yeah, the acoustic is a Martin DX1, which is the cheapo with fake wood on the sides and back. Sounds decent, though. The guitar on the right is a LP Deluxe with P90s in it.

Closing the Distance by TheKomrades 1 year ago
Dave, I didn't write this with the intention of sound Celtic, but maybe I know why it sounds that way to you. Instead of using a regular major scale, the song has a flat 7 (aka Mixolydian). A lot of Celtic music uses this same scale, so that might have triggered a connection for you.

Everybody, thanks for all your kind words! It means a lot!

MIDNIGHT HOUR (duet) (cover) by Barretok 1 year ago

Yesterday I saw a guy on TV - I think his name was Steve Cropper. He wrote the music for this song. He was talking about the intro, and he said that later when he was writing a song called Knock On Wood, he needed an intro for it, so he took the intro from Midnight Hour and reversed the chords. Instead of going down, he goes up. Interesting, eh? I just joined a cover band, so I have to learn both songs!

I also wanted to say that the vocals remind me a little of Derek St. Holmes, who used to sing for Nugent. He's a great singer. The guitar solo was very aggressive/exciting, so that's a big plus.
Number 1 by Dave M 1 year ago
Nice start! I really like this genre of music. Here are some ideas for improvement, for whatever they're worth:

The guitars sound more fuzzy than ballsy. I've done the fuzzy thing lots of times myself. It tends to happen when I record at a lower volume than I'd need, so I turn up the preamp gain (or maybe a pedal) to get overdrive. It's practical for recording in an apartment, but it doesn't have the balls. A loud tube amp breaking up in the power stage is really the best, though maybe not from your neighbor's perspective. If you can't go loud, then maybe try using a modeler like a Line6 Pod or even the built-in Garageband models. Also, hot pickups are guilty of this. They tend to fuzz out instead of ring, and this can even happen when you plug the guitar into a modeler. This kinda happened when I recorded "Bad News". The pickups were a little too hot, and there was some fuzziness even though I used a Pod.

During the part where you're singing "I'm looking out for #1", what about strumming the chords instead of just hitting the low 8th note? Then go back to the muted low note for the verse. I could be off-base on this, but it could be worth a try.

The vocal melody seems restricted to a narrow register, so it's harder for the listener to sense a buildup or letdown. Maybe you could try altering the melody so that it's lower in certain parts, and higher in other parts.

I enjoyed it!
All the King's Horses by GreenStation 1 year ago
Thanks for the nice comments. The power chords are a Les Paul going through a Marshall JCM 800. The snare drum is a Ludwig Black Beauty.

Your playing is really excellent! I've enjoyed listening to this several times already. It seems like the drums are just a distraction, though. My guess is that the song would be even more effective without them.

Man, this is good. A superb voice singing a superb song. IMHO, the track could be improved by a little more variation in dynamics - parts with a higher energy level and parts with a lower energy level. You did it at the very end by bringing things down. That sounded good.

Definitely one of the most melodic pieces I've heard on this site. I've listened to the song many times and still enjoy it. One criticism I have is that the low droning note on the organ doesn't work well with some of the guitar chords. I think this song could be fashioned into a hit.

Great idea to write a waltz! Overall it was pretty good, but I wish it had some pauses here and there. Maybe a little percussion (classical) would sound good with a piece like this. All in all, though, thumbs up!

My Guitar by TheTiler 3 years ago
This is really good. How long did it take you to write this? My only criticism is that there was an audible noise floor. There was quite a bit of room ambience. How far away was the mic from the guitar? I'm not knocking the room ambience, btw, just curious about mic placement.

Never Be Sad by georgicporgic672 3 years ago

I think this has potential, but it falls a little short with this version. The intro is a bit long, as well as the verse. When the chorus comes in, it's anti-climactic because the guitar sounds buzzy instead of heavy. Maybe if you searched for a better tone and double-tracked the guitar - hard panned left and right. BGV's in the chorus might work well. More dynamics (louder parts and softer parts) to the song would help. Sorry to criticize, but I do it because I think this could be fixed up really nicely.
