Loved the bass and the big, big, big guitars. As one of the lone gearheads on this site, what have you changed in your setup? The guitars sound quite a lot better than earlier recordings.
FEMALE VOCALS WANTED by Smitty 1 year ago
The one that comes to mind is Nightwish (when Tarja was the vocalist -- all albums up to Once). Amazing voice. The current vocalist does not rate.

Some songs by Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and Epica are also good. Evanescence isn't really metal, but some songs are pretty good.
FEMALE VOCALS WANTED by Smitty 1 year ago
I also have a fondness for female-fronted melodic metal bands. I hear a male vocalist working better on this one, however.

Great collab, and I remember the original fondly. As a guitarist, my only comment is that the wonderful acoustic guitar sound is pretty low in the mix -- I kept wanting to hear it at higher levels. Thx for sharing.

Thx for the comments. Yeah, the Mesa is a new addition, which I rationalized after selling my Marshall. I no longer enjoyed the JCM2000 sounds, and this amp presented itself at my moment of weakness. I feel like I should superglue the knobs in their place once I find a good tone, since the slightest adjustment dramaticaly changes the tone. It needs to be LOUD, louder than I typically want, to truly open up in the lead channel, but I really like its clean channel, and plan on using it in some upcoming tracks.

The lead guitar was done with the Fireball, as I'm still dialing in tones on the DC-5. The Fireball, in contrast, is ridiculously easy to find good tones, and it continues to be one of the best amps I've owned, especially for recording. You literally do nothing to the sound. It's like it comes out of the speakers already mastered.

I don't know what flamming means. Google tells me it means openly/flamboyantly homosexual. I've gotten criticism before, but this is a new one. (yes, that is in the search results -- no, I'm quite certain Eido was instead using some fancy technical term to describe how I'm screwing up).

Appreciate the listens/comments. Thanks.

Eido, you have no reason to apologize. Some songs are meant to be collabs, and others not.

I usually stay far away from listening to covers, especially those that I'm very familiar with, since most are anemic or pathetic renditions of the original. But this. This was a treasure to find. Prelude (Unplugged) by Balok 2 years ago
Wow. Just wow. I've always been a big Balok fan, but I think the part that blows me away the most (and I'm pretty sure I'm correct) is that you probably just pressed Record and played this all the way through. No stops, no redos, you just played it. Most impressive piece, as usual. Did I mention how big a fan I am?

Thanks for sharing.
Thelema by Heartland 2 years ago
Really liked the riffing and the arrangement of this one. The tempo changes, stops and harmonizing totally worked. High marks for guitar skills as well.

Lacking vocals or lead guitar, I'd probably say the tune (in its current form) will appeal mostly to other guitarists. I really like metal instrumentals, so I can "hear" the song with solos here and there. I hope you end up growing the song. It's worth it.

As a suggestion, the tone chosen for the rhythm guitars seemed a bit thin and fizzy. Reducing the gain, especially where you're dual tracking, would help a lot. The bass guitar doesn't have much of a presence either, which probably adds to the guitars' thin sound. Tone, however, is subjective, and I hope the suggestion is taken for nothing other than that.

Thanks for sharing.

My DIY vocal booth by jkane 2 years ago
Looks great. So I reckon you're a stand-up singer, not a sit-down singer? Is the booth fully enclosed? Is it really claustrophobic? What kind of mic do you use? I know I'm in the minority, but there's GOT to be some other gear-hounds on this site that want the details.

Nice comp, Dan. I'm a total softie for orchestral rock/metal, so this was right up my alley. Though you probably won't be too surprised, the stumbling block for me were the midi guitars. iam by tokai2 2 years ago
I like the song's concept and vocals a lot, but I'd have to agree with you that the backing track's lacking the needed zing. What effects are you putting on the guitar/bass/drums? The vocals really pop out, which is a good thing, but I'm wondering if the other tracks' eq ranges are just too close to one another, and they're all fighting for the same sonic space. Have you tried different drums? Do the guitars, bass, and drums have hi- and lo-pass filters on them?

I downloaded this to get more meta-info. -0.9db tells me you're probably not going overboard on compression, which I thought might have been another issue. The song does sound better on my iTunes vs. the player on this page.

I'm only writing this because you asked for input. I think the track's definitely worth a remix if you're interested. Hope this helps. Thx for sharing.

Great guitar work on this! I'm not hearing much (or any) bass guitar. The drum loops seem very "crashy" and redundant in parts --- adding more fills will certainly help with the latter. But the rhythm and lead guitar more than make up for these shortcomings. I hope you grow it. Thanks for sharing.

sex dolls by tokai2 3 years ago
Sounds tailor-made for a movie soundtrack, where lots of nefarious things are going on. I really liked the imagery this evoked, but yeah, there's quite a bit of clipping going on. This is a very loud mix at a low volume, and while that's the norm these days for radio, a softer mix with the limiter applied would really do the job. I'm not sure if I'd call this metal, but I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for sharing.

A Depiction of Betrayal by Outcry 3 years ago
As you asked for input on the mixing, what I'm hearing is a lot of clipping. If you're going for the Death Magnetic sound, that's one thing, but the crackly buzzy sounds that are consistent through the song tell me your levels are far too high. GB doesn't have much in the ways of tools to control clipping -- just the one red idiot light. I'd love to hear a new mix that doesn't have so much clippage. Hope you try again -- I think the song has potential. I'm, unfortunately, unable to give more input until the clipping's under control.

A Top of Gold (done right) by Ignoramus 3 years ago
Appreciate the listens/comments! I'm not usually one for recycling an older tune, but I always liked the riffing in this one, and felt it was worth salvaging. James did some righteous drumming on this one, which the tune needed. Thanks again for listening.

This was done with my Marshall TSL. And the Les Paul was in standard E tuning, a rarity for me. But the two just seemed to work together like peanut butter 'n' jelly.

I've since gotten an Engl amp/cab. Stay tuned for the br00talz!

Diminished Returns by Eidolonia 3 years ago
Ok, I'm back.

I knew I wouldn't be able to listen through the site just once and have an opinion. I've just listened 3 times, back-to-back.

This is masterful.

The acoustic guitar is a wee strong, and has some background noise as well, but I think it works with the mood that's immediately set. I actually prefer it being just guitar/piano. The starkness would be completely ruined otherwise. How the song morphs into electric guitar, and then full-on metal, with you singing (!!!) was perfect. I'm hearing lotza passion in the vocal delivery. Like jk, I was hanging on each word. And the drum programming by Dan totally works throughout -- I'm not really sensing them being flat as mentioned above. Nice work, Dan. The ending transition back to the piano via that held, sustained note was perfect.

Yes, more of a bass presence would fill out the mix, but this will get lots of iPod play over here in Igno-land.

Well done, gents. Thanks for sharing. And now that you're a mod and all, don't you dare stop recording!

Isn't it weird, thrilling, cool and slightly scary to meet an iComper you hardly know (and yet, in a small, significant way, know quite intimately)? Good on both of ya! I've had a chance to meet a few of my iComp buddies. The first time was like a blind date, in a way. Didn't take pics, but in one case, the three of us had an impromptu jam and recorded a quick song.

Thanks for sharing the pic with us. Judging from Dave's neat appearance, this must have been BEFORE you started pounding pints, yes? Heheh.

Thanks again, Dan, for having me on this track. It was a nice departure to be a hired gun vs. the ringleader, but I felt very comfortable with you at the helm. The storyline and the drama of this song are what drew me to it, but the other artists adding their own stamp to the song made it irresistible. A great collaboration of talents through and through, and I am proud to be part of this.

I know singing a capella is incredibly hard, so hat's off to you for that. But there's so much clipping going on this track that's hard to get past it and comment on the singing. It'd be nice to hear a cleaner version of this -- might intrigue some folk to add instrumentation to it.

Another grand achievement from Dan et.al. Not really sure if this fits in the genre "Metal," but it's a really cool fusion. I'm sure this was a nightmare to mix, with as many tracks as are on it, but it sounds well balanced and full. Hats off to the group -- nice vocals and instrumentation. As a suggestion, the distorted MIDI guitars don't quite measure up to the lead guitars or acoustic guitars in terms of tone. But hey, that's just me, I'm an ignoramus, and I could be wrong. I'm sorta surprised there's no download link, but at least I know where to find it for another listen. Thanks for sharing,

After You Are Gone by herrsolera 3 years ago
Another ambitious collab! As another who really gets off on gathering many talents into a song, I can vicariously enjoy your feeling of accomplishment.

The songwriting itself is worth a mention. Grand in scope, full in instrumentation, varied in moods. Very Kamelot indeed.

Really liked the guitars on this one, guys. Definitely hear the Kamelot influence in the rhythm chugging as well. Solo was great.

Mixwise, there seemed to be a lot of sonic competition during the busier parts of the song. It's early AM here, so I'm listening to this on heads, not monitors. I was really looking forward to hearing "metal Macoco" do his thing, but his work was quite buried in the mix -- I had to really focus on the bass to pick his parts out (again, on headphones). Vocals, also, really seemed pretty dominant in parts, pushing the instrumentation farther back in the mix. As a veteran and victim of such happenings, i.e. mixing lots and lots and lots of tracks together, admittedly I may be more sensitive to this than others.

Congrats on your collab! Thanks for sharing,

Appreciate the comments!

@ Dave: Yep, that's my pic of my guitar.

@ Ashley: Thanks for the suggestions. I was using this tune as an opportunity to try out several pickup settings/amp settings, and the intro guitar was the neck pickup. Certainly more muffled than the bridge pickup, but I've grown to like that sound as an option to the "nothing but searing lead" tone.

@ Pink: Yep, Orion is and has been one of my most favorite tunes, and I wear it as a badge of honor if this song reminds you of it.

@ Greg: You just gotta find the rich drunks!

@ Dan: The snare does have a bit more spank, doesn't it? I liked everything else about that particular loop set, so I went with it.

Always a treat to catch a fresh one from birdmix. Your vocal range always impresses, as are the lyrics. Just an opinion, but I thought the delay was a bit overdone at the end. Re. a remix, well, call me one dimensional, but I hear a sleazy rawk song in these vocals. Easily. Thanks for sharing.

Giants by AllenDean 4 years ago
Grow it, dude! This is a real rocker! As you're asking for input at the early stages, I'd have to confess the pod's wah tone doesn't do it for me. It sounds too synthetic, not organic enough. That's not to say the riff isn't kick@$$. And, it's just my opinion. I guess I'm old school. Miking a Marshall, Crybaby pedal, lotza noise, cables all over the floor ... heaven! Your very trademark vocals work excellently with this tune. I'll keep an eye out for the final version, but thanks for sharing what you've done so far.

A very interesting concept through and through. I thought the spoken voices were clips from a movie, but was pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise. Excellent choice for vocals on this track. The violin/cello worked well together as well. The vocal samples, in parts, were more atmospheric than audible -- I'm guessing that was intentional. I was compelled to listen to this a 2nd time to have it sink in more. Wonderful collab! Thanks for sharing.

Herrsolera's scifi description hits the nail on the head as to the imagery this conjures. [Cover] Shroud Of False by Eidolonia 4 years ago
Well, my hat's off to ya, Eido. Monitors and earbuds and headphones would implode with embarrassment and auditory abuse if I dared upload a song with my "singing" voice, but this totally works. The comment above about the track cutting off seemed a bit strange, what with your perfectionist approach towards things musical, so I checked out the original version, and your cover is following it as it should. My vote: all for encouraging you to sing more, and in longer songs where we can really hear your voice. This was a teaser, but hopefully just a teaser of what's to come. I especially liked hearing a bit of your British accent ("...understaaaahnd" ).

Production wise, I'd suggest nuking that harsh "blurp!" at the end. Instrumentation sounded great, and perhaps because this is your first vocal mix, and your vocals, you had them lower in the mix than they ought to be. An opinion, to be sure, but I'd wager other vocalists will chime in and say your vocals should be higher in the mix.

Thanks for sharing.
