I Am A Wave by JHarley 3 months ago
@Frost Thank you!
Ah, but if it didn't have the intro the song would lose its vaguely political overtone - the song's about the wave of consumerism eating the world - the intro's from Reagan's political promo from the 80's smiley

Dancing in the park by ponkey 3 months ago
Its brevity is more than made up by its startling lyrics (I wanna write like that!!) and stunning creative musicality. Ponkey, I am honoured to be the other 50% in this project. (you'll let me know when we get to 50 or so tracks, right?)

An Unremarkable Man by JHarley 3 months ago
@Baboon Well, the trick is to begin with the stereo field - trying to get a good balance. After that, work on the EQ, making sure each track takes up as different a sonic space as possible. i.e. cut some of the higher frequencies in the Bass track, Allow the vocals to mainly inhabit the 3 - 4 K space etc.
Here's a good webpage that illustrates the different frequencies and therefore where you can boost or cut to bring out certain attributes. http://www.recordingeq.com/Subscribe/tip/tascam.htm
Then it's just a matter of balancing everything as best you can - listening on speakers, headphones, the car stereo - as many different types of speaker as you can until it sounds reasonable on all.
After this it's time to master the recording - and that's a whole different conversation smiley
An Unremarkable Man by JHarley 3 months ago
@Baboon Oh, my chaotic approach maybe wouldn't look good on screen smiley
a) Play a bit
b) Drink a bit
c) Play a bit more
d) Yep, there must be some more of that whisky somewhere....
(All the while recording)
e) Then sit down and try to position everything in the mix so it doesn't sound too nasty smiley
f) Listen when sober and go to a) again...

OH MY GOD!
This is what I've been waiting for. Wow!
And I'm not just commenting because you mentioned Syd Barrett in connection to one of my songs, no, you are a true artist.
I love the cello - it sounds like you are really letting go - reminded me a little of Jacqueline du Pré - not in style clearly, but in that freedom. And your voice; definitely overtones of PJ Harvey coming through (which can never be too bad a thing in my book)
Overall though, unlike other artists which in itself is a feat.
Gonna go get me some more!

2263 by JHarley 4 months ago
Thanks guys smiley
This is another of Ponky and my Haiku songs we're writing at the moment.
Let me decode it. 2263 is the exact number of gigs the Ramones played during their existence. I was lucky enough to have met (and jammed) with them on a couple of occasions - one of which turned into us all hiding in a store room over-night in a university in the North of England! Fantastic people.
Dee Dee (RIP) Ramone was an incredible bassist and he was kind enough to give me a handful of his specially made bass plectrums, one of which I found in the studio today. Thus I used this plectrum to do the four on the floor bass line (first take - bloody good plectrums) and here is the result.
I began in full Glam mode as this is firmly where the Ramones were just prior to their success...never sounds as good when you explain though smiley

Hey Miles, thought I'd check out your music because you wrote some incredibly nice things about my latest song - and I"M SO GLAD I DID. This is fantastic. I'm astounded. And all live instruments too. I also try to avoid Midi and loops wherever possible, but you've taken it to a completely different level. And the songwriting prowess really comes to the fore.

Kraus? by JHarley 6 months ago
Many thanks guys!

Pharmakeus, yes, I really should finish some of these songs - they're mainly from 2006/2007 (I have hundreds), and I was just having a trawl through the 'attic' looking for inspiration when I chanced upon them. Thanks for the really nice comments smiley
Kraus? by JHarley 6 months ago
Mr Kane sir! Oh I'm not so sure about a small nation, perhaps a small cult....

Yes I was just trawling through my unfinished archive (which consists of many hundreds of songs...eek) and though I would post one or two. Sort of like clearing out the attic. Do you think anyone will mind?

Good to hear from you,

John

Richard, your album recently accompanied me on a flight from London to LA - and it accompanied me on the way back too.
It has so much depth and so many layers in both its musicality and the lyrics. I am awestruck my friend.
