Biography

Kym Serrano was born and raised in Arkansas, though you’d never guess it from her music. Now a NYC resident for more than a decade, Kym has experienced music from every angle. She has composed, produced, and released both solo and collaborative works, and has billed at venues across the globe, all under various show names including Her, The She-Devil, LaDiabla, Executrix, and Kali Ma.

Music entered Kym’s life in highly traditional forms. Classical piano, orchestral French horn, and the integrative responsibilities of Drum Major came easily to her as a youngster. Although academic options for college were plentiful, Kym acknowledged the lasting importance of music in her life and opted for Oberlin College's [http://www.oberlin.edu/] TIMARA program [http://timara.con.oberlin.edu/] for electronic music. Despite the bleakness of Oberlin, Ohio, Kym was inspired and profoundly shaped by the flourishing, revolutionary Detroit techno scene and it's early 90’s outlaw dance parties. Relationships formed here facilitated the release of Kym’s first two EP’s with Ersatz Audio [http://www.ersatzaudio.com/]as First Mode [http://www.discogs.com/artist/First+Mode] in the mid 90’s and, with college wrapped up, she set her musical curiosities loose in New York City.

Once settled in Brooklyn, Kym co-founded Spelunk Recordings with long time studio partner Dave "Chromatix" Moxon [http://www.discogs.com/artist/Chromatix+(3)], and quickly added DJ to her skill set. The Spelunk sound was light-years ahead of it’s time thanks to Chromatix' unparalleled skill for styling robotic, analogue tweak. Their small label became known for up-tempo minimal grooves and aggressive bass lines sunk beneath jazz modalities. While the professional partnership was short lived, the legacy has been anything but. Spelunk tracks released in the 90’s still sound fresh, and adroitly work DJ and dance floor today.

On the performance front, Kym was quickly playing the big systems around town at NYC's Touch & Matter-Form parties, opening for a bevy of the industry’s best such as John Selway, Ralph Lawson, Dave Ralph and Roger Sanchez. Her educated ear and uncanny ability to read a room were soon booked in cities throughout Europe and even Tokyo, playing house and tek alongside Zombie Nation, Electric Indigo, Tiesto, and other artists now credited with shaping Europe's dance scene.

Needing to care for a loved one at home, Kym stepped out of the performance scene for several years, but enjoyed dabbling in mutidisciplinary collaborations Most often and notably creating commissioned scores for Heidi Latsky Dance [http://www.heidilatskydance.net/], a New York based modern dance company. In 2007 she re-emerged as a DJ on NYC's underground scene; co-hosting the critically acclaimed weekly party QUEDATE CRUDO, sharing deck-time with DJ Peter Anthony & friends at RETURN of the LIC SESSIONS, as an interim holiday resident at NYEX's weekly 80s party (affectionately named LOSER), and providing the tunes at various artistic benefit events.

Now that digital production has come of age, Kym looks forward to dawning her composer hat again in coming years, but the skill she still revels most is connecting with a room and making booties shake.
