I sing as an escape, as a kid I blocked out stuff with songs and immersed myself in music wether I was humming a tune bimbling around the garden or putting on my Dad's dusty vinyl LP's....I just loved it...
I took a B-Tech college course in 'Studio recording and Sound engineering' at Nottingham Polytechnic when I was just old enough for them to let me on the course.....
I was the youngest there and the only girl and I learnt how to position mikes and record to 2 inch tape....I even learnt how to solder up electrical circuits !! ha ha !!
I completed the course and got my certificate.I didn't miss a lecture even though I was doing a full time temping job and my 2 or 3 gigs a week singing solo sets in Bars and clubs in Nottingham...
some of those venues where seriously seedy !! I used to do 80 percent covers and 20 percent my own songs.......
MY BIG BREAK !! In the summer of 2001 through a friend of a friend I went to do a vocal session for the top notch producer James Sanger.
At that time he was developing a young unknown band (at the time !! ha ha !!) called "KEANE" It was amazing to watch him turn them from a fairly averable pub rock band (I.M.H.O.) into the Keane that made it big !!
I recognised James's unique sound from the Dido songs he'd worked on but I came to realise how much of his stuff I'd heard and loved without realising it was him doing it. (he's worked for U2, Madonna,Dido, Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry,Phil Collins, Natalie Imbruglia,Mel C, Sinead O' Connor,The Appletons...bla bla bla the list goes on !!)
Any way It was a real privilage to see him working and get a sneak peak at how much work a true producer actually does to create the sound of the records.....
It was amazing to watch him in the studio and I knew at that point that I had to ask James to work with me on my songs...I was over the moon when he said he'd have a listen to my songs and help point me in the right direction, so that's what I did....
Over the last 5 years, yes 5 years people I've been writing and rewriting songs for my record with James developing my sound, I'm hoping that we can share our songs here and get some constructive critism.
