Biography
Here's a link to my Facebook music page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Basaran/391714250924589 if you have the time, check it out! My name is Luke Butler. I'm from Ireland and simply put, I love music. I remember when I was younger, one Christmas, I was fascinated by my cousin while he was performing for the family. I hadn't seen many electric guitars up so close at that point and he went straight into the Feeder classic, Buck Rogers riff. Just the sound of the distortion, I remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Needless to say he inspired me a lot and soon enough I began to learn how to play myself. Took some lessons for a few months until I eventually started to learn myself and develop my own style with strong influences from bands like Green Day, Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine.
I eventually got a group together from word of mouth about other musicians near me and we formed under the name, Samsara which was changed quickly enough to Rage Perception. I took position of rhythm/lead guitar and backup vocalist and started going steady on rehearsals with the group. It took me awhile to get used to the band setup as I was so used to playing on my own but it eventually started to come together. We mostly did covers at first but our frontman eventually began to bring in some originals. This kicked me into action and giving it a go myself.
That's when I started to write songs. Once I had the first one down, they just started to flow after that. It's definitely not easy though, I could work out one song in a few hours but another could take me days or even weeks to complete but I find songwriting a really rewarding experience. You work hard and get to be proud of something you've created that no one else can lay claim to. Also gives you the chance to let out your emotions when you have no other way of doing so. I brought my first song to the group and we began performing it, great feeling. After some time the band started to go through a lot of disharmony due to musical differences with our frontman and the rest of us decided to reform as The Influence.
I took up the position of frontman for the group. This was a great time. Wrote and recorded lots of songs, rehearsals nearly every weekend, it became all I looked forward to during the week. I should state that how we were able to record so many songs was because of my uncle, Fergus O' Farrell of the band Interference. He's probably most well known for having his song Gold, featured in the film, Once and it's Oscar winning soundtrack. He has a studio based in Schull and i've been so lucky because he's provided it as a place for me to practice with my groups and lets me record for free! He also provided me with my first electric guitar, an ESP Strat copy. Which is still my favourite one to use today and was also his own guitar back in the day and it's even older than me! I can't really thank him enough for that but check out his website if you have the time: www.interference.ie
So with The Influence, we gigged around for the most part of 2 years, entered a few competitions and got to a few finals too but unfortunately never won. I just loved this time, performing live is great, just the rush you get from it is amazing. I'd be bricking myself before every performance and I still do but when i'm up on stage playing to a crowd I feel like I can do anything. Provided the gig goes well of course, you'll always have those rare dodgy ones but even they motivate you to bounce back. Like Rage Perception, musical differences and other circumstances eventually led The Influence to disband as well. I'm not quite sure of the timeline before this but this brings us to the Summer of 2009. I then decided to form a group called Wishcraft with one of my best friends.
Since there was only two of us and we weren't really that interested in playing covers with the group at that stage we immediately began writing for an album. We came up with a concept of a broken man, that is at a fork in the road during his life and doesn't know what to do with himself, he's spotted by an exciting and spontaneous but secretly manipulative woman who spots his weakness and exploits it, basically buys and sells the man for everything he's got. Things have come full circle again for the man but this time he won't allow himself to be the victim and takes matters into his own hands. His revenge leads to a tragic end for the woman as she is remorseful for everything she has done to the man, his torment has led him to snap and sends him over the edge. Each of the tracks on the album tells the story and so follows the same timeline as that concept.
The album is entitled, Put Me In Restraints Before It's Too Late and it is without a doubt one of my proudest achievements. Even though my voice has improved immensely from the way it's heard on the album, listening back to it now I sometimes can't believe we pulled it off. During the recording process I performed all the instruments and vocals as my friend was more the lyricist of the group. So this led to me expanding to more instruments including drums, bass, piano etc. Drums are now definitely one of my favourite instruments, they're just so fun to play, can let out a lot of aggression on them too which is definitely more my playing style, I definitely drum better playing hard rather than mellow.
I guess you could say Wishcraft are on a 'hiatus' now but we definitely have not disbanded. Took a break from it during our final year in school and now with greater distance we've stopped. I'm certain you'll see more of us though! So yeah, this is why i'm embarking on this new solo project. I'll have lots to give you so stay posted!
Also, fair play to anyone who read down this far! You have my respect. haha
