Lots of great stuff in here. Took a little bit to hit its stride but really awesome when it did.

Of course, there is room for improvement. If you're interested in some mix tips, PM me.

Very cool. I use follow actions all the time on drums and percussive material. Never really had the guts to try is on harmonic/melodic material. Very inspiring piece both musically and technically.

Well.... by PerpetualDawnz 2 years ago
I really really really like this.

But since you're asking...

What HHM and SH have already said is bang on. I'd add that the Whitney sample, in my opinion, is not worth the potential legal hassles. I'm positive that you can find a royalty free soul-y sample that will provide the same feel.

Here's a tip: Try turning the volume way way down. On this track, when I do that I only hear the drums. To me, that means the drums are too loud compared to the other elements. Doing this is a million times easier than trying to get balance right at higher volumes. (And yeah, I should do this myself more often)

Housefire by AcetyleneJukebox 2 years ago
Some masterful slicing. Great track.

On a tech note, is it my imagination or is this mastered really loud. How'd you do it? Inquiring minds smiley
30 degrees south by 921 2 years ago
Dude this is a great track.

As to the technical question, I question the speakers/system you were listening on. Cause on my studio monitors, the track sounds great (I might take a teeny bit off some of the high frequency transients, dunno). That said, I also know that the system in my car is very boomy and some of my own mixes don't work well there... Long way of saying I feel your pain and frustration smiley

This track is beautiful and using words to comment on it seems somehow inappropriate, like talking in a library or during a ceremony.

And so I enjoy your work quietly, letting it wash over me.

Don't Follow (pt.1) by beanpolewatson 3 years ago
You wouldn't know it from my music but I am an AiC fan. Your take on Don't Follow is really something.

Something you might try to balance the guitar and vox might be to try to play the same guitar part again into another track. This'll create a doubled guitar which you can bring in and out to taste.

Of course once you start down this path, you might invent a slightly different guitar part that compliments the first.

Another trick might be to run the single track through a light compression.

But the important bit is your voice, which is fantastic. I think your intuition is bang on, the one take stands up quite well and really doesn't need anything.

Fantastic track. Really cool.

Genre? I'd just call it rock (just like Robbie Robertson or Daniel Lanois).

I'm with Moses, though, I think this track deserves some mix lovin' and his suggestions are all good places to start. I think this track has the potential to really sparkle.
