Hey wow. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this before. This kind of severe originality is a rare and precious thing. Thanks for sharing.

Nice. You know, given that the original was essentially just Zep's idiosyncratic treatment of a standard chord progression, I'd say you have as much right to claim a new original piece as they did. Certainly nobody would hear this and say, oh, this is that old Zep song. Though it says something about your artistic integrity that you even call it a cover.

Let's Make The Water Turn Black (Zappa cover) by EvilFactman 3 years ago
I can't say about numies and poots, but I do know -- from Zappa's "The Real Frank Zappa Book" -- what the "whizzing" and "little creatures" stuff is all about.

Apparently little Frank and his buds used to hang out and whiz in a barrel in this guy's garage, day after day, and eventually the thing filled up and they just let it brew. After a while, they noticed some kind of tiny little creatures had sprouted to life in the barrel and were merrily swimming around. God knows what they were, I picture "sea monkeys", though how brine shrimp would have found their way into a barrel of piss is a question that probably only Kenny can answer.

I'm not crazy about the vocals but the orchestral setting is a lot of fun and surprisingly fitting! I'm sure Frank would have been pleased to have such resources at his disposal way back when (my understanding is that he and Ian Underwood pretty much did this whole album by themselves, hence the extensive use of sped-up vocals).

Tri-Image Notation Composition by JakeLion 3 years ago
Um, "interesting" is the word. The phaser fight effect actually reminds me of George Harrison's "Electronic Sound" album, which I just heard for the first time recently. I have to spend some more time on that website you pointed to.

In a related dimension, I once took someone's Usenet post, processed the text's bits as graphic data, the put up a link to a JPEG for the world to view. Naturally it looked like just a bunch of static and the author was deeply offended.

Cool gritty sound, not too tight, not too loose, good job guys.

I do wish I had more of a clue regarding what's so depressing about catfish, though! I mean, what ARE the catfish blues? (I know, you're not supposed to ask questions like that, but but but...)

Thanks for the song!

LittleHooligan - It almost certainly is *not* the Righteous Brother because the "Bill Medley" I found in my Googling is recorded as being a "Phil Medley" in several other places. Mostly likely somebody just got confused by the sound memory of the wrong name. Sigh, trusting the Internet for information! Anyway, I've corrected the credits above to better reflect my ignorance. If anybody knows for sure, please share the wealth.

In other news, it was a pleasure working on this with you!

Thank you very much, boys and girls! (as Z might have said) Comments much appreciated.

Mark

P.S. -- Yes indeed, that is me on a sped-up vocal, using the same trick Z used himself all over that Mothers of Invention album "We're Only In It For The Money".

P.P.S. -- Doesn't that sound like a bass? It's not, it's just a regular guitar with flat wound strings, played without a pick. I have to get me some more of those for my spare guitar, I really liked that sound.

Mysteries of Love w/Mark Hayes by RubyDubidoux 3 years ago
From the instrumental side, let me say I very much appreciate all your kind words. And of course deep thanks to Elaine for working with me on this and creating one of her loveliest vocals yet.

I find this to be absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The Julee Cruise / Angelo Badalamenti version just takes my breath away like not much music does; I picture angels made of pure love and light, together eternally in Heaven.

Ironically, the song was only written at all because Lynch couldn't afford to pay to use "Song to the Siren" by This Mortal Coil -- a song he has called his favorite -- in the movie!

Anyway, thanks again, 'til next time!

Logic: Recording over one compressor with your built-in Mic on your Mac by bekka 3 years ago
Bekka, do you route the audio from one track to another via a bus just for tutorial purposes? Or is that something you're doing as part of the production? I understand that by re-recording like this you're creating a new audio file with the compressed sound actually recorded -- but why not just apply the compression to the original track?

Nice work with the acoustic guitars, and the electric's entry was a pleasant surprise! Not crazy about the vocals but that's just my personal taste.

Logic: how to use the compressor! by bekka 3 years ago
Bekka, if I'm seeing correctly, you have the Limiter checkbox unchecked, correct? Is that the way you work all the time, are you getting a limiting effect by just using compression and adjusting the gain? I would have thought using the Limiter was an essential part of compression, but that just goes to show why I needed a tutorial. When, if ever, would you turn the Limiter on?
Logic: how to use the compressor! by bekka 3 years ago
Thanks for doing this, Bekka. Between the practical demonstrations you give here and the manual's explanations of what exactly all those knobs and sliders do, I should be in good shape. I much appreciate your fulfilling my request on this one! smiley

COLD DAY IN HELL by Barretok 3 years ago
I should elaborate on my earlier comment...

This has a superbly solid, pro band production of course, and *way* fun vocals from Bernardo, but Elaine is just spectacular (and I try to avoid hyperbole). I mean, this is something like a masterwork of its kind. As a non-iComps friend said after I sent her the link, "HOLY SH*T!!! This is so good, and damn now *I'm* all hot. Ok, am downloading. Usually I only do your stuff, but I gotta have this."

ATTN: Bob6Stringer: Thanks! I was always struck by the contrast between the jauntiness of the tune and the incredible grimness of the lyric, so I decided to do something about it by changing it to the minor key. Glad it had the desired effect for you.

Mark
While My Guitar Gently Weeps w/Mark Hayes by RubyDubidoux 3 years ago
ATTN: Bob6Stringer: Actually, in line with both other suggestions I've received and my own too-late reflections, I added more compression to the vocal (to bring the soft and loud parts closer together in volume) AND I took the electric guitar (EBow'd actually, not slide) down a notch, resulting in what both Elaine and I think is a better version. Unfortunately, there's no way to get it up here without losing all these great comments (but if anyone cares enough to want a copy, I'll be glad to mail it to you).

Thank you for that CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM! =8^)

Mark

P.S. -- I am, however, happy with the tempo, but appreciate the observation anyway.
Parallel compression on Logic Studio by bekka 3 years ago
Thanks again, Bekka!

You know, I don't know about anyone else, but I would certainly benefit from a tutorial on compression in general, as in, how to use the main Logic "Compressor". Lots of things to tweak there and I'm finding it rather overwhelming.

9/11- THE REMIX by dr_elvis01 3 years ago
I cannot comment on the topical aspect of this piece, ridiculous as that may sound; I have various reasons for refraining from trying to follow any of the words (sung or spoken). But as an ambient musical sound collage, it succeeds brilliantly.

Many, many thanks to Elaine for doing this with me. She truly is the muse she says she is in her bio. You gotta love those harmonies, wow, but it's her soaring solos that really send me into tears of joy.

A note on the electric guitar: this was a Gibson Les Paul, played with an EBow, routed through a Boss GT-8 effects processor, then stereo-imaged and flanged in Logic for good measure. (And if all that isn't enough to make a guitar weep, I don't know what is...)

Very nice sound and yes, it's kind of MIDI-ish but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, not at all (unless of course it bothers you). Having this piece sound more like an actual orc wouldn't have improved the listening for me, in fact, it might have diminished it! Just my 2 cents... Mark

UNTITLED ADVENTURES IN A DUSTY ROOM (last words from generation X) by dr_elvis01 3 years ago
Commenting (I have to admit) while still listening for the first time... great instrumental sound, a perfect bed for a reading. I would also like to hear the voice a little more clearly, though; as it is, you couldn't hope to understand what you're saying without the lyrics in front of you. But still, very cool, my mind is wandering around among the various instruments, digging each in turn! Sweet and salty!

Dr. Elvis: one of the main things that makes the guitars sound "that way" is that I used the strip-silence feature of Logic. It gives each individual line a very choppy sound that really boosts the rhythmic quality of the overall mix.
