Deeper Light (DI) by becwil 1 year ago
Wow, haven't been on this site in years. Nice that my introduction back is one of your compositions, bec. Lovely music and rich sounds. You mentioned to me that you are composing this series to help you sleep on planes. While this particular piece is lulling, there is enough going on that I would want to stay awake to keep listening.
Looking Into Fire (UF) by becwil 3 years ago
Yet another marvelous addition to this intriguing cycle that cries out to be put on a CD. The intensity of this piece is profound indeed.
Broken Chains by becwil 3 years ago
Epic beauty. The original composition already had a majesty and grace and now Bec's additions take the drama and passion and kick them up a notch. Yet more proof that she is THE Go-To-Gal when it comes to collabs.
Protocol by becwil 4 years ago
I only wish this could have gone on longer. Bec, you are Queen of the Collabs.
Spicy Acidic Limbo by becwil 4 years ago
As usual one listen is never enough. Meditative and evocative of things that can't be easily put into words. My fave part was the dripping water at the end. Immediately brought to mind an image of spelunking through some ancient subterranean cavern. Lovely collab. Well done, both of you.
The Keening Spell (UF) by becwil 5 years ago
I just listened to this 3 times straight through. It is a very evocative meditation. The first half seems to be a sombre ritual, while the second half almost sounds celebratory. Funeral rituals are for the benefit of the living, a way to get us through our grief. What interests me is how those bells near the end seem to be asking a question. Not just about the dearly departed, but about ourselves too. It is at times like these that we all must face our own mortality and ask what is the purpose of life if we are only to end up as dust? I'mlooking forward to the next installments of Ultimately Fossil. But more so, I am interested in hearing them all together when you are done. Perhaps you should present them in a podcast with an on line discussion after.

Baby Mine (new and improved) by Geechi3 5 years ago
What a sweet version of a great song. I keep seeing the momma elephant's trunk reaching thru the cage's bars to rock her baby to sleep. A tear? no... um... er... I just got sumpthin in my eye. And you put it there, Linda.

Bec, it was a treat to work with you. We overcame mic obstacles and pitched ideas and suggestions back and forth. Felt like the journey was the destination. And this final product is definitely the icing on the cake. Hope we get 2 do more 2gether. I have actually stopped leaving stars, but I will make an exception in this case. That's because you are a star.

Do they really by fotakis_m 5 years ago
I just came back from listening to the original version and listened to this one again. You really did improve it. Congratulations.
Do They Really... by AnangaRanga 5 years ago
Very interesting to listen to this. I came here via a link from fotakis-m's revised version of this song. I think he made some good improvements, but I think there are some good beginnings here. My one criticism is that sometimes the loops seem to be fighting with each other. The guitar loop that I thought worked best is the hard strumming one. But the saving grace of both versions is Nina's vocal. Her voice is like some beautiful undiscovered gem. And, as in her heartbreaking rendition of Don't Dream It's Over, her natural innocence gives poignancy to the lyric here. Congratulations to all.
Do they really by fotakis_m 5 years ago
Very interesting song. I thought the loops were well-constructed. Really liked the heavy fuzz on the guitar solo. But mostly I loved the vocal. She has a distinctive voice. I remember her from AnangaRanga1's cover of the Crowded House song Don't Dream It's Over. He put some kind of synth treatment on her voice, but she sounds better au natural. Now I'm off to listen to the original versionof this, the link for which you so generously provided. Thanks.

Timothy by timtation 5 years ago
Manages to sound both innocent and sinister at the same time. I thought the high-pitched vocals near the end were quite funny. All the same, I don't think I'm going tobe able to sleep tonight. If the singers aren't saying "Timothy" what are they saying?

ALZHEIMER'S LOVE SONG by mediadad 5 years ago
Both jaunty and moving. Interesting how you achieved that. When we find the courage to tackle difficult and frightening subject matter it can be such a blessing to discover it opens something positive within us. I suppose that is the power ofthe creative spirit. Thank you for this most inspiring song.

Highway Chaos by mikecreamer 5 years ago

Good one, Mike. I like the subject matter. I think it's healthy to give vent to the chaos within us in this manner. Certainly better than actually taking out your car into traffic whenin a bad mood. Thispiece reminds meof the film "Crash" by David Cronenberg, about people whoget sexual satisfaction from car crashes. I also like the film of the same name by Paul Haggis. I think your piece is also an interesting commentary on the highway community where many spend a good deal of their lives. (Not me,though, I don't drive)

I'm Dying Like the Flowers in My Room by bencharity 5 years ago

First of all, let me offer sincere condolences on the passing of your aunt. I was initially drawn to this piece by the intriguing title. I think i would have been fascinated by this piece as it is. But knowing the back story allows me to connect in a very human way. The sounds now reflect, not just different emotions, but the conflicting emotions - sadness, anger, fear, impotence, relief(?) - that one might feel during the passing of a loved one. I think it took some courage to express all that, whether you did it consciously or not. Thank you for sharing this.
no name (collabs wanted) by hamdog 5 years ago

Very tight and a great sound. My first feeling (and this goes for "no name 2" also) is that the instrumentation is so dense there is no room for vocals. But I like a challenge, so I'm going to download this and if I come upwith something I'll let you know.

Wow! That surely was a treat forthe ears and the intellect. What a great concept! I agree with one of the previous callers that this shouldbe an opera. The interesting thing for me is that the music already conjures such strong images in the mind. Could any stage or film images match what is already there in our heads?

Freedom Blues by Splifford 5 years ago

This was a good collab. The guitar was stinging. I liked the vocal but I kept wanting to hear it "testify", if you know what I mean, get more intense. I felt this about the song in total. Also, there was the mention of adding an organ. Another possibility would be a harmonica, playing wavering chords on a chromatic - like Little Walter - interspersed with some single-note stabs. But as it is - well done!

Spies by ciheins 5 years ago

Pretty impressive for only loops. Near the end there was some kind of phase-shifting sound that I thought might be a voice thru a vocoder. But i guess not. I think Spies is as good a title as any. The piece does have a kind of cinematic or dramatic quality.

Yes it is simple and I like it too. Right now it is an interesting exercise in textures. But what I'm also hearing is that it wants to build into something more substantial. I believe what you have here is only a beginning... and an end. I think there is a dynamic middle waiting to be brought to life. I look forward to hearing what comes next.

False Religion by RichardRinger 5 years ago
5

This feels more accessible than most experimental pieces. I was oddly soothed by it. The title suggests that religion (or just Christianity?) is the opiate of the masses and listening to this has a similar lulling effect. Is faith merely a comforting illusion? Are we alljust sleepwalking to our doom?
Don't Dream It's Over/Cover by AnangaRanga 5 years ago
5

Interesting. The more I listened to this the more I was engaged by the underlying tension. The sterile (synthesized) innocence of the vocal adds a certain poignancy - even despair - to the lyric's message of encouragement and hope. The image in my mind was of a child of winter encased in ice telling me to carry on. Tender and heartbreaking. I thnk you have made some subtle, yet brave choices here, although I don't know if any of this was your intention. I guess that's what happens when we put something out there. We risk losing a bit of ownership when others embrace our work.

I wonder what Bill Conti would think of this? I love hearing the inspirational "Rocky" lift given such an elegant treatment.

By the way, I wanted to leave a message on your page for "Rock You More Sad Dwarves" (great title) but I could only load half the song. Anyway, what I heard I really liked, especially the medieval twin-guitar attack. For some reason a Shakespearen lyric from Twelfth Night popped into my head.

"It was a lover and his lass, with a hey and a ho and hey nonny no and a hey nonny nonny no, that over the green cornfields did pass in springtime, in springtime, the only pretty ringtime when birds do sing, hey ringa-dinga-ding hey ringa-dinga-ding, sweet lovers love the spring."

I'd love to hear you turn that into a Metalhead's Madrigal.

Tres cool, fif! My heart rate is pumping like a locomotive. I was born and raised in Montreal so I have a soft spot for this piece. Awesome collab! Speaking strictly as a lo-fi poet, I don't think I'm qualified to critique the production, except to say I really like it. I love that kind of stuttering, interrupted hook. If you ever felt inspired enough to remix any of my stuff, I'd say go for it.

Beautiful voice, Linda. I wish you would have printed the lyrics, not that your singing isn't clear, I just like to read lyrics. "Don't push me down" already sounds like a refrain, so maybe there's more structure than you think.

I would love to collab someday with my spoken word playing off your singing.

I have to admit Idon't know the original song, so I can't comment on this as a cover. But I like it on it's own. I like the overdubbed harmonies. I take it you are playing Garfunkel to your own Simon.

Just curious, what part of Scotland are you from? I have cousins in Edinburgh and an uncle in Glasgow. One of the cousins used to sing with Mouth Music.

I like this. I'm a below average harmonica player, but I liked the harp sound on this, and the raw bluesy feel altogether. My only nitpick is that I wish it could have gone on a bit longer, maybe develop into some kind of jam. Maybe some vocals? I don't sing, but I do write lyrics, if you're interested in some kind of collaboration.

Trippy. I know you said don't ask but I hafta ask about the trumpet. That's not a loop (?) That you? I mean, in for a penny... But on the whole I liked grooving to this.

Kind of like a trip-hop version of Booker T. Infectious.

I've been fooling around with Garageband loops for the past couple of weeks to accompany spoken-word pieces. Unfortunately I'm recording my voice on the built-in mic in my iBook. I'm on the look out for a good USB mic.

I read your comment to A. Chittendon about the snowball mic. Do you have one? Is it worth the money? I've also been told to buy a regular mic and get a an adaptor for a USB port.
