I did try to use the steel drum, but I failed with arthritis where I needed to twiddle my fingers on the keyboard to get that distinctive sound. I know what you mean about the 'old film' vibe too; might I suggest 'Anna Kerina' a film in the 40's or 50's i saw when very young and the lea dining lady walked under a train; very dramatic but good film. Regarding the voice and smoking; yes I did smoke for years (don't do it) and I drank (not to excess) when I was singing out, but I don't think for a minute that contributed anything to my vocal qualities; rather, it has taken clarity and breath away.......... | @Brewchugger, Ha ha ha, the answer is that I was a smoker until 1993 and haven't smoked since, but the 'slow brewed' effect to which you refer, is probably down to many years of performing and singing and in places where smoking was allowed therefore I was inhaling others smoke. Also it will be to do with age.... I'm no chicken you know, even tho' I do squawk a bit in parts LOL. DO NOT SMOKE!
