Thanks for the comments on 'The Aspen Grove.'
It brought me to your page, and title "Mirkwood Fires" immediately intrigued me (The Aspen Grove might as well have been named "Lothlorien" for the ethereal, otherworldly sort of atmosphere I was trying to evoke).

Program music has always been a favorite of mine, and you've done a lovely job of telling a story with this composition--especially in adding the sound effects at the end.

Thanks for sharing this here!

This so reminds me of playing Myst and Riven (which is a good thing in my book).

One brilliant thing about those games is that they had the power to transport you into new and amazing, mysterious places and allowed your imagination to 'fill in the blanks' of an unfamiliar world using ambient music and sound effects in addition to the surreal graphics.

This composition does the same thing in introducing usual and unexpected sound textures. Very cool smiley

Aww, Woody, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I'll keep you in my thoughts and my prayers. You're right, too--music is a good way to help deal with the process, so I'm glad you're using that as an outlet.

You really need to make your songlist VISIBLE again, Bryn.

We can't follow your music if we can't see it...and your music *deserves* to be followed.

Now, everyone else tell Bryn to make his song list visible, too smiley

This was one of those songs that I did mostly for myself, and it's nice to know others have enjoyed it, too!

17. Christmas SISCOM by THE_SISCOM_GURU 3 years ago
Hahah...it's cool to see this posted here!

I once told Bryn that SISCOM could be put to so many different songs. It fit flawlessly with the Italian Art song, "Nina"...I just had to find a Christmas song that it would overlay well with...
So, after narrowing it down to two possibilities, this is the song that I went with. I really didn't know how well it would work until I actually tried it. smiley

So, this is really sort of a test track that I sent to B.
I'd love to further develop it into a Magpie track!

Thank you for posting and sharing this, B!! smiley

the road I travel by Mystified 3 years ago
Thanks for all the comments here smiley
I appreciate the time you've taken to let me know that you've enjoyed this composition.

A note about the piece in general. I did two piano improvisations--one right after the other. In the first improvisation, I'd worked out a melody/motif that I quite liked, but the piece didn't flow very well, and had a few sour notes and misguided chord progressions (lol). The second improvisation that I did took that motif and better shaped it into the song, and the main track, that you hear.

The first half of this song is affected with a plug-in called "Vinyl" that adds static, distortion, and a bit of 'mechanical noise' or buzz--and generally makes the track sound like an old vinyl record. I did this purposely, symbolic of 'the road travelled,' or of the past. Halfway through the piece-- in the 'darker,' lower octave section--the effect is minimized and full eq range of the piano is restored, though occasionally 'pops' can be heard--a result of the heavy effects I've placed upon doubled tracks, or perhaps the backing track.

I was going to find and eradicate those loud 'pops,' but then decided that the imperfections and randomness of them mirrored the very road that we all travel, and that they enhanced the fabric of the aural tapestry and the storytelling I intended.

By the way--the first improvisation is present in this piece as a heavily modified synth 'reassignment' and the electronic 'chimes' you hear throughout. The primary piano track is doubled with a synth overtone that also weaves throughout via panning and volume adjustments.

It's interesting that some listeners find the Vinyl effects distracting while others like them. In the end, I chose to present this song as a sort of 'storytelling' composition, with elements of nostaglia, light, dark, consonance and dissonance. It's selfish, in a way, because it doesn't always please the listener. But, in this 'musical journaling' composition, it well illustrates 'the road I travel.'

1987--Amorosi miei giorni by Mystified 3 years ago
You know what is so strange in listening to this track?

I wish that I could now (as a teacher) train that 23-year-old that I was in a way that would have 'reached' me.
While I was never a natural performer, I think that I was convinced, (by some nay-saying professors) by the end of my college career, that I just was not a 'good' voice for classical music.
Hearing this music file now, I can see the problems--but I also can see how I would have approached *me* in order to overcome them--and gain more confidence in my instrument.

The one thing that I am very grateful for, however, in my transition since, is that at one time I was a vocalist singing to others' songs, while now I am actually composing my own songs and singing to them.

So...the best of both worlds, after all was said (or sung) and done.... smiley

Get it wright? As in the Wright brothers? smiley

This song came about spontaneously. Improvised, expressionistic. I didn't spend a lot of time on it, and purposely so.

Even in its imperfections--and perhaps because of them--it expresses what I want it to. And, therefore, it's how it's meant to be.
