Biography
Music seemed like Christmas to me when I was a kid. My presents were discarded records from a local 50's rock radio station, thanks to my mom. She cleaned their offices and asked if she could take the old records that were headed for the dustbin. I swear I must have listened to "Rock Around The Clock" five-hundred times.
Junior high through high school I played violin and in the orchestra met a guy who played the cello and who was deep into music and electronics. His influences were all the 80's new wave music, Kraftwerk, and Yaz. I'd heard him called one of the few people talented enough to both "play AND build a synthesizer". We recorded music and made Super-8 movies that were demented masterpieces of low-budget film-making.
After my years of playing the violin and making it to 'second string', I decided to quit the violin and take up drums as a venue for my frustrations. I had a lot of fun, but I think my father had constant headaches.
About ten years ago, all I could afford was a drum machine and a Tascam four-track, so I referenced the music of Adam & The Ants for inspiration (heavy vocals and drums), but somehow I always ended up sounding ike the Beach Boys. Many tapes later, I bought a Roland synth to add to my growing list of equipment.
I've had the good fortune to play with a variety of strange and wonderful musicians... during art-school, I played drums and sang with a very interesting guy who was always drunk and totally into South African music, and I was one half of a minimalist punk/blues duo, another friend and I jointly invented a sub-genre of music we called "techno-Latino", and I also enjoyed having many philosophical discussions and recording sessions with a semi-famous surf guitarist.
Now, with my Mac, GarageBand, Soundtrack (and several synths and a 4-track in storage), I'm still having fun exploring the universe of sound with all of you creative people here on iCompositions.
