NorthPoint Live at Portland Oregon Saturday Market, Oct 4 2008 by NorthPoint 1 month ago
Thanks very much for all the feedback, friends. Much appreciated! Bec, yes we will make you an honorary Portland biker smiley Cees, Eagle, Laz, Pharm, Orcas, Garni thanks for stopping by - we just recorded this on 2 mics out in front of the stage at the outdoor Portland Saturday Market, hoping it would not rain smiley We ran them through an M-Audio Fast-track stereo USB input, and recorded it on a laptop using Audacity. Pretty low-tech and simple setup to capture a live gig. We had a ball playing, it was a long time since Kenny and I played and the first time we played with Scott on drums (we have a benefit show coming up in December for a school with our original drummer Charlie from the Wildwood Trail CD!). Orcas, I'll pass on your comment to Lisa - it was great playing together, a combo Bridge Creek and NorthPoint gig.

Nice rock anthem feel. Great guitars, and cool bass line out of the middle instrumental part. Gene explained the mixing earlier - it would be great to hear the vocals balanced in the mix eventually, but sounds like that is already in the works. Nice tune, congrats to all involved!

What does one need to stop a Bad Wolf? 6 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drums, 2 vocals, a heavy death-magnetic S U R A K mix, and one well-aimed Silver Bullet. You nailed this one Billy, right between the eyes.

Ground control to Captain Sloparts: well, you certainly messed with the machine on this one, and results are outstanding. Great mix, funky groove (which surprises the listener after the cool computer effects in the opening). the guitars, as usual, are tasty and loved the bass. All in all a fine ride... mission accomplished!

Rock'n'Roll Tragedy by 8MonthMalfunction 2 months ago
Yes - as pharmakeus astutely observes, the lyrics are a tribute to Patti Smth, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Rolling Stones. The thought was to complement Ian's music and title, and John's ripping guitar, with a theme of tragedy in rock and roll.

A few snippets:
- Silver Poison, Unknown Origin, Tempt the Faithful, Sister Ungrateful: a nod to Marianne Faithful, who Patti Smith wrote a poem about, and her haunting, tragic tune Sister Morphine covered by the Stones. Also, Patti's poem/lyrics called Fire of Unknown Origin, on the song/album by BOC (from her poetry book Seventh Heaven, which also includes the poem Marianne Faithful - it appeared in Patti's book Babel as well)
- Wild horses: Stones tune, and Patti's 1975 debut album titled Horses.
- Reaper, 24th of May, Jesters: all references to BOC. I debated whether to use Midnight Ramblers (Stones) or Midnight Jesters (BOC) and stuck with the New Yorkers (and their great song, the Sun Jester)

There are a few more references, I can't recall them all at this moment. I'll edit this page when I remember others. I know the line "The stones of regret are hells foundation" is influenced by another one of Patti's poems but I'm forgetting which one.

I agree with Padowan's comment on the vocals. Maybe I will try to rage it up in a future version of the tune. This time, I was going for a Jim Morrison feel, thinking about the BOC song by Allen Lanier called In Thee, which has the line "Jim says some destinies should not be delivered", and I see Jim as a canonical Rock and Roll Tragedy.

Patti Smith and Allen were long-time partners and Patti co-wrote many BOC songs, including Baby Ice Dog, Career of Evil, Revenge of Vera Gemini, Debbie Denise, Fire of Unknown Origin, Shooting Shark.

For more information, check out Patti Smith's wikipedia and web pages, or to learn more about her music and her poetry (which is fabulous and I recommend everyone purchase), see:

Thanks so much for all the great comments and discussion! Long live icomp....

Wow! Jesse and Olivia, your vocals work great together. This is a great tune, nice trademark Rusticalia sound, and Olivia's voice is a perfect addition. Hope you two collaborate on more songs together - well done.

On this version of the tune, in addition to spelling Rusti's handle right this time, i had a chance to read the lyrics. Fantastic. Reminds me of the best Cowboy Junkies songs in terms of strong, poignant storytelling. Hats off Jesse, great material (would sound great at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville on the songwriters circle night).
