Great stuff. The song is well written and I think your unique delivery on vocals is a plus, not a negative. I do agree about the drums needing some work, though.

Hi Darlene! Good to hear from you.

Nice song. If you want the vocal to stand out and be a little clearer, try adding a little EQ in the high mids (about 5k). Just a little will do it.

Was the mic a Shure SM57?

When it comes to rock, when in doubt compress the snot out of it. smiley

Sometimes you gotta compress it two or three times to get the desired effect. One of my favorite combinations for lead vocal is dbx 160x compressor into Empirical Distressor compressor into Logic Pro Limiter plug-in. Puts the lead vocal right in your face, front and center in the mix.

I compress backgrounds too, but then roll off a little of the highs and put a reverb with pre-delay on them to make it sound like they're behind the lead. I don't generally put room or hall reverbs on lead vocals, especially on fast songs. Maybe a short plate, but that's it.

Sounds like the drums could benefit from a little squashing as well.
