Staus and long in comming uptade on FRSC Radio show 3 years ago
Hi Folks,
First I wanted to apologize for being off the radar for the last few weeks... or more. So many people here have been so supportive of our one hour radio show for independent musicians, you deserve an apology for my absence and seemingly being uncommunicative. I intended on posting this before I received some very sad news today. But even before this news, things just got very hectic for me, and a bit overwhelming.

About 4 weeks ago my Mother had two surgeries that sent me to LA. My brother in law whom I rent from had three spinal surgeries, so, I gave been just swamped. The show went on but we decided to feature a single artist to make things easier and to get better production.

ShandowofNine did such a great job producing a one hour show for us, and sadly we had a tech issue both times I went to play it. Welcome to a collective non profit radio show!

Many people wanted and offered generously to help us get video up etc. JL, and so many others, the community here is truly amazing. But for a one hour show, I felt I needed to concentrate on the show being better produced before I jumped into so much. I think were nearly there. I have also taken on other responsibilities at the station that also keep me busy.

I have updated our website. The Shadow Hour has been replayed 5 times with great feedback. So, I ask anyone who wants airtime to simply send me your songs with permissions. We will be doing many new shows, some based on genre, some featuring single artists, who knows. The possibilities are endless.
For those that know my Music know that Amy was one of closest persons I have ever had in my life. Just listen to the song "Amy" or "So Much Stronger." She sadly passed away on Thanksgiving from a staff infection from a simple cut. A few people have written and asked if I was OK, before this even happened. Its been hard to keep up with all the amazing people I meet here. I have my own health issues that keep the amount of time I have a day pretty limited, to about 5 hours a day.
Just doing this show every week is allot for me.
So, I wanted everyone to know that we will be doing more shows that do not just feature one artist. And we really want to continue to support the collaborators and musicians here. I still would like to do Mini Mugshots with JL.

I know everyone loves skype. I use my computer for everything from recording to watching TV and the radio. Although I will begin to use Skype again. Its simple easier to leave send me an email. Although I will be setting up a skype number for voice and people can leave voice mail messages or call in the station during the show as I will be forwarding the number to the station for that hour.

I fixed the Free Radio Calender at www.freakradio.org.

I want to thank everyone who helped, who offered to help. At some point I do want to do video. But I need more time as a host first. In the mean time we will do some video in station and post it at are now revamped blog.

http://www.tangerinedreamteam.blogspot.com/

This coming Tuesday, if I am in town and not helping out Amy's family, I will be doing a show in her honor, playing music I wrote for her, and any songs I think are appropriate. Amy loved music. If you have any songs, maybe about someone you lost, or someone you loved, and you feel like sharing them for the show, send them my way. She also had a great sense of humor. So, fun songs are OK too. In the mean time. Send me anything music my way for future shows and I will get in on the air.
I hope everyone is well and the Holidays treating you kindly.
Peace out!

i like the idea, i have wanted to put up a globe with musicians on my site "musicians crossing borders" or something... it would be nice to have a specific forum place to announce shows, etc. i have used the lounge for this about the radio show, i thought that was the proper place....? I only do this when icompers are on the show. I think it would be a good idea. thanks for the post.

What is the true purpose of this site? 3 years ago
Bravo! I couldn't have said it better than what 8MonthMalfunction wrote --
"• An audience for my music
• A place for me to hear new music and new artists
• A global playground for musicians across our little planet
• A place to make new friends, real friends, that you talk to and work with on a regular basis, rather than the friends you get on myspace and facebook
• A chance for me to have a trumpet (or insert another instrument here) on a song when I can't play one myself
• A place to receive praise and sometimes criticism that allows me to grow as a musician
• The only website on the whole internet that I would consider a 'home' to my music
• A very generous donation to the growing community of independent musicians to help them further their music
• A free musicians webpage and music archive
• A community that shares not only music, but thoughts, opinions, ideas, stories, videos, art, photos and emotions... It is a virtual Library Of Alexandria to the indie musician

The purpose of iComp is as long as it is broad... It just depends on how you decide to use it!"

Hey Mungo,
Just making a point here. Hope your not taking this in any way but as an exchange of thoughts and ideas. I appreciate yours. Like I said. I am thinking of changing it as much of a hassle as it would be now.

I Googled Tangerine Dream Team. I found everything from online stores to music sites and a sex shop...

As I understand copyrights. I am not an expert.
I did one for a band I was in once.

Their band name pertains to commercial entertainment only. Meaning you could start up a ... head shop or any shop called "The Tangerine Dream". And so could someone else if it was in another city and was not a franchise.

We could debate if we are commercial entertainment. But that has been done to to nausea previously when we talked very thoughtfully about song permissions when I started the show. Hope this satisfies ya. Peace to you!

Yes true, but were non commercial non profit and we are called the Tangerine Dream Team. Not the tangerine dream. Also there is another band with the same name. Copy rights are specific in how they can be used. I could not start a band and go commercial without problems. But their are three bands I found with that name... Does it bother you Mungo??? That we use that name??? I hope not. We really have the best intentions. Peace to you!

Show Archive of the Tangerine Dream on Free Radio SC 3 years ago
Good question Mungo,
Well, really its not named after them. I am not sure I like the name being completely honest. But its growing on me and was my idea. I was not thinking of the band at all at the time. Note the word "Team", meaning Coral and I and the musicians who participate in the show. That's what its all about for me, the music in a free non commercial format. I did reflect on the band, there long history from... late 6o's till... now. They have gone through allot of changes in musicians, the have a diverse LONG history bringing in studio artists and composers for albums etc. Now still going its almost like a collaboration carried on for 40_ years.

But in truth, I just like the name and I like dreams. There are many groups, bands, etc. with similar names. In the sixties there was LSD named tangerine dream, long before the band. I have a collection of 60's zines and I saw the name there in a very early edition. You cant really copy right tangerines and dreams. We may change it though. Its a new show. In 100% honesty. I wasn't sure I would get in and get a time slot so fast. It was a last min decision. Hope that answers your question. Probably more than you wanted!
I am tired...
Peace
Tim

Sharing collaborations in commercial and non-commercial ways 3 years ago
carlajpatterson,
Thanks for this post. I don't want to dominate it with my single issue. As some know, this issue came up while I was and am seeking thoughts and about a one hour all independent music show on Free Radio Santa Cruz. A Micro Station that also streams. I learned a great deal and had my opinion altered a bit regarding permissions for non commerical applications on this site. You can see the exchanges on at the Lounge and my Blog.

I have opted to always get permission, although my opinions on this waver as it is truly a non commerical show and station. I guess deep inside I simply wish everyone just wanted people to hear their own music. That's just my fantasy its not reality.
One could easily assume the loose use of sharing and downloading abilities means non commerical use is Ok without permission. PM tells me non commerical broadcasts without permission of any kind is against the rules. I think it should be an option, But the show , music and the musicians are more important to me than whatever opinions I am wrangling with now. As a musician, I feel much like Lapskin, I hope someone plays my stuff for non commerical use! Like please man.

The collaboration aspect of this site makes me... more respectful of getting permission. Its a very unique site. I now see the show now as a collaboration, between the people who made the music and the show itself, if were accepted!

Although this site, the share functions etc. are owned by commerical interests, despite them simply passing on links, money is made by those sites. So although it may seem a bit hypocritical to part of me. I think for this site, its good to ask.
Peace
Tim
Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
Also, keep sending any permissions you may want played. Future show themes will include, specific genres, music made by teens and younger, a show on collaborations. At times shows featuring a single artist. Realize this is a one hour show to start. The main never ending focus is featuring music that is 100% independent. I am very interested in music from all over the world which I have found here.

Keep sending in your work. I appreciate it very much.
Best Music Mixer for PC 3 years ago
Any thoughts on N-track Studios? I am looking for something good for a PC, but not really expensive. I was trained on a big board when Blank Cd's cost $5.00 and recording analog to digital and back to analog, ADA -- was the thing at the time. Digital sill wasn't there yet. Since then I have used really good Mac Software or used a real studio. But I really want to get my PC up and running for some in-home recording and collaborations. I have Mics, a nice small but clean board. Clean Monitor speakers for mixing. I need something clean with good options. I am have Reason, which I am new too but enjoying very much. I want to use something that works with it. I noticed at a friends house who uses N-track Studio, that it did work with Reason. It seemed to provide him a good live recording environment in conjunction with adding tracks and sounds from Reason at the same time without having to import tracks from one program to the next.

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
Hello,
If you look at the other posts and my Blog you will see the exchanges regarding needing permissions for a non commerical stream and micro radio station. My mind is certainly changed it's opinion after much feedback. As I said, this is not about my opinions, but the music, and the artists. That is and was always my intent.
As someone from management said "Simply allowing downloads of a song does not grant permission for music to be redistributed, even non-commercially." also I was wrong about the pod-casting services here. They do not allow casting of other peoples songs without permission. Again I am new and brought this up with the best intentions of wanting to do whats best, for the musicians, regardless of what opinions I may have.

I have been swamped with permissions & support. so I thank all of you for helping me along with this.

As far as posting more about the show. We are finalizing the first show now and meeting with the station tomorrow to see if were even granted a time slot. I have a new list but waiting for Coal now to finalize before our meeting tomorrow eve.

I will continue to get permissions from everyone as I have. I agree its the right thing for this site.

The focus of the show is to play and promote independent music from local to worldwide one hour a week.

www.freakradio.org

People may want to peek at the application which is easy to find and look at the schedule. Its a very lefty station. Its free radio. A micro station that has been alive for 15 years with community support. Our show will be all music, some interviews perhaps, some local in show guests, or even far away phone in guests, the artists.

I want to thank everyone. I cant think of one person that has spoken or emailed me that does not deserve my thanks. I really want to be welcomed into this community and have no issue in asking permission before any broadcast. I was wrong about a few things. Everyone has been extremely nice and supportive, even when we may disagree.

If accepted the show will not start for two weeks. So I will have a chance to post an example of our first show and be very prepared. Also Coral has been busy filling in for a sick host. She will bring much sanity to all this soon.

Peace
Tim
Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
Hi,
Thanks
I appreciate your comments, if we all agreed this word would be a boring place. Just think, we would all be listening to the same music. It seems there is plenty of people granting permission and interested. There are other sites I will use too and local music of course. So it's not as much work as it first seemed. Again I am new here.

I can and will stick to asking permission. Even from those already sharing with every social networking site around which I consider to be commercial. And I am simply giving you my opinion here, seems only fair. I am going to continue getting permission regrdless.
People using "share" and allowing downloads are allowing people to share with the most Popular Services like - and this is only half --
Email Facebook Twitter Save MySpace Digg (0)Text Live Delicious Stumbleupon RedditG Bookmarks LinkedIn BeboBuzz Up!Blogger YMixx Technorati FriendFeed PropellerWord PressNews vineXanga Blinklist TwineTwackle Diigo

and the many many people pod-casting others music from here without permission, using the paid service this great site provides. Blogger's have ads, they are a commerical derivative. So does every other share expect... save and bookmarks... Despite Free Radio Santa Cruz not being a commerical derivative, I will continue to keep people informed and get permission. I will continue to update people here and in the forum. ADMIN made a good point on my Blog, that not everyone reads these.
I do not speak for Free Radio SC. I am not yet a member. But as it will be Coral and my show. I am sure we can adhere to getting permission.
Its not about my opinions, but getting the music out there. So in that interest I will keep to getting permissions. So many great ones have come in. I appreciate and respect all your opinions.

Peace everyone
Tim

vegetal,
It truly was, late 80's through the nineties we had a big scene here. Still some good things but not the same as it was then, when clubs were abundant and the music was far more diverse, bands came from everywhere. We still have the Catalyst and some good venues. I remember jamming with Camper Van Beethoven (sp?) back then when they were just a small not yet known band.
Peace and thanks

Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
Ok the list is changing, as we only really need a few songs for the application. Coral Brune is now helping me and has joined Icomp. She is a very talented musician and hosted and programed several shows. I am fortunate to have her share this show with me if were accepted. So I will be working on this with her.

It is not feasible to ask everyone for permission as the show progresses from everyone. My feelings are if your sharing your tunes, and take a look at the companies you are sharing through, that I should not need permission for a 100% non-commercial show. I will ask anyone who is not sharing. I hope this seems fair, and anyone who wished to be excluded, please just email me. I really wanted to be sure this was OK with the Icomp community. Everyone I have asked has gave me permission. I have gotten 99.9% positive reaction to the idea.
Peace out
Tim

Thanks everyone for your support, comments, advice. It has been very illuminating.

Also I am looking for Punk, Spanish, Ska, Reggae, other world music, and music by younger folk. Any suggestions send em. Peace Tim

Update: I am now putting together the example CD for the show with Coral Brune who will be hosting with me and joining Icomp soon. Slots are available at Free Radio Santa Cruz. I will post my song selections for the CD here, which will be a diverse mix, although the show will be split each week into two genre's spanning a half hour each. Later the show may be longer. I hope to be ready for the next meeting in a week with the collective. I will also email the artists I selected.

Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
Thanks for all the permissions here and the many in email. I really am so impressed at the talent here. I thank everyone. I have enough for the Demo CD but need more for the show, please keep em coming.

Ok. Gary, I was waiting for this, but fair question. Anonymity is a strange thing. In the old days of small communities, everybody knew each other. You couldn't just say anything on the net like now and not be held accountable. I think its a good and bad thing. You may just be asking but I need to say a few things that may come up with my name] which is Tim Rumford.

I am in prison! Kidding.

My Last name is Rumford. If you Google me, you will find I am very political around homeless rights issues, rights for the poor etc. I was very active in this until I became too ill. I had a food program for a year that in time was run by the people it served. I also have a companion bird. A rescued scrub jay named Blue that dances and sings that is around the net.

This show is not going to be political steered by me in that way. I need a break from politics. Although as I said. Songs with social and political messages and themes will be used. But not for my ends or opinions, for whoever wrote the song. I need to say this although I normally don't. ( no sad f#&ing violins please.)

I am disabled. I got very sick about two years ago, although i was already disabled from a severe spinal injury and encephalitis. During that time. I continued to try and write and stay active. I am not proud of a few poorly written articles I wrote during that period. And even some protests I was involved in. Although the issues I care and wrote about and acted on, rights for the poor etc. I still feel very strongly about. I have changed the way I think about activism around these issues in Santa Cruz. They need to change. Anyone who lives there knows what I am talking about. This will be my Show, if I get it, with the help of a co-host, because of my health. I feel not only do I need a break from politics and activism, but this will also be a very healing thing for me. So I ask whatever anyone's political feelings are, you may just be curious, Please Don't judge this project based on my past activism, or anything we may agree or disagree on. I am a very open minded person. This is about music not my politics. The show is for the musicians. Sorry if this had nothing to do with why you asked. The issue of rights for the poor is a VERY heated one with A LONG history in Santa Cruz that I have a small part in. I am glad I do. Everything is a learning process. I think the best path towards change is by example. Peace Tim Rumford
Thank you all for downlaods!!! 3 years ago
I am a media freak. I am also listening to most of my music here now too. I use 1 terabyte USB drives that are cheap now. $100.00 bucks. Never thought I would see the day of 1+ terabyte drives.
Peace all

Free Radio Santa Cruz - Permissions needed for airplay. 3 years ago
I am applying for a weekly 1 hour show on Free Radio Santa Cruz, a non profit, Commercial free pirate radio station that has run for 15 years in Santa Cruz Ca. You can find out more about the station at http://www.freakradio.org Though it broadcasts in the City of Santa Cruz only, it does stream worldwide on the net. The show will feature all independent music of many genres. I make no money, on the contrary, I will pay dues and have to attend meetings and help with the station for this privilege. Read the application here - http://www.freakradio.org/frsc_app.pdf

Free Radio Santa Cruz is owned by the people who participate, an ever changing collective of people.
I am contacting people to ask express permission to use a songs for my example CD, a requirement of the application process. If accepted I hope to use many songs from here with permission along with local music. The CD can be heard prior to it being submitted to get an idea of how the show will sound.

Please let me know if your interested. Send any express permissions via Icomp email. You can also give me blanket permission to use your songs on both the example CD and the show if you wish. Or a list of songs.

There will be no specific political theme for the show. Songs with social or political messages and themes will be part of the show as all kinds or music will. Its all about the music to me and getting talented peoples music out there, even on a small pirate station.

I realize collaborated songs may need the permission of many people. Although realize your sharing your music now with many commercial companies. Click on "Share" and look at how many companies make money now off your music or the ads all around you now. I will be paying for the privilege of playing other peoples music. The station runs off donations and dues only. This covers costs of running the station and its never enough.

Pluses to Free Radio --
Free speech. Explicate songs are OK.
Santa Cruz has a healthy music scenes with a few big venues.
Its a live show. People can call in and comment.
All shows will be archived and can be listened to on the net at anytime.
Its free exposure. I will be bloging from Icomp about the show as well as pod casting, if my show is accepted.

Your helping keep free radio alive and independent music heard without people making money off your music. I am simply asking for permission to play music because I love music.

Send me your permissions via Icomp email, for one song for the example CD for the show. Post questions of comments here.

I am going out of my way to get permission even from those that allow downloads, because I am a member of Icompositions and want to respect peoples music and give you a choice.

Thanks

Admin, Yes SC does rock and roll, and waver at times... We need a good show that is all independent music. I hope the "collective feels the same." Right now they are debating about English VS. Spanish shows, and more bilingual. I will play anything that is good in the universal language, music.

Wow, thanks! That's allot of info and a good point to soak in. And a whole different debate you bring up regarding advertising, maybe for a new thread. The stats are extremely helpful and will assist greatly when I go to make the plea for the show. Thanks for the permission. Please do me a favor and email me your permission. I am getting lots of mail and support. What I need is what you gave me, permission. Its easier for me to keep track of via email. I need to put together a demo show to get the show permitted by "the collective." I figure 7 songs or so. I am nearly there, day one. If you have a favorite song or something, let me know too. Thanks again for all that work!
Peace out!

becwil, you not falling on my deaf ears I assure you. It is good to have all sides of an issue brought to the table. I appreciate the post and the info. From what I am gathering from here and the emails I am getting, this is doable with peoples express permission and without breaking any of the rules of this site. There is enough interest I believe. My beliefs on what is OK and what is not, is really of no consequence. I will stay within the rules, regardless if I agree with them or not. First I have to get my show, pay my dues etc. Within a few days, if the current level of interest and express permissions continue to come in. I will apply for a show. So please, keep the comments and thoughts and permissions coming. Tell your friends and chime in. I first need to be accepted as a host. This means putting together a cd of what the show would be like. So I need songs just for that. So, please send permissions if you want. I was a co-host at one time. It should not be an issue getting a show. But I have not yet even approached them yet.

For those that are interested. The link to the station, which is very lefty, is
http://www.freakradio.org/

I suggest you look at the schedule to get an idea of current content. The best and most popular show with all Music is From Cream to the Dregs.

Email in permissions for my example show CD. No genre will be excluded. I want a very diverse show. You can also email any show and send them your song all by your self and ask them to play it. This works well at UC stations too from my past experience.

Peace
Tim

ShadowofNine, How I always enjoy your insightful comments. You are correct. What I am trying to do is not very different than a podcast. The ability to stream, podcast and download here opens the door to anyone who wants your music. Your only real recourse is a cease and assist order if someone broadcasts or posts your song for profit or not.

The radio aspect reaches 20 miles, max. Most shows are also podcast. That is up to the Host. It is a bit strange that downloading and pod-casting is allowed yet this is such an issue. However, I want to do this without ruffling feathers, and to help musicians, even if it's in a very small way. I am choosing this route out of respect for the musicians. If the idea is not liked, than I won't do it.
I await to hear from management.

As far as a creator ownership aspect. It's not really owned. There is a collective that pays dues, as all hosts do too. I would be paying for this privilege of playing other peoples music. The collective changes. Someone started the idea of course. It is all run by dues and donations which are few. I assure everyone no money is made.
Peace

Thanks very much for the input, all good thoughts and ideas, keep em coming. Nothing posted I disagree with thus far. I like the email idea. Any station, if they wanted could broadcast from here illegally, they can broadcast anything they can stream. Although currently at free radio SC there is little focus on music that expands past one or two genres. They respect independent music. I think the collective would appreciate your own rules here as they have there own rules too. Plus it would be my show, me at the helm. As a musician myself, I appreciate copyright laws, particularly with independent struggling musicians, many who are far better than the crap on the radio. I would never broadcast without some kind of express permission and adherence to the laws of this site, which I enjoy very much. I am new though, and not as knowledgeable about the sites rules etc. My idea is simply an expanded forum on air in one city, the rest is streamed. I could post the show times and song lists and musicians could even call in. Santa Cruz has a healthy music scene for a small city. We have a few major venues. Its simply an idea and I appreciate any and all input. Thanks

Thanks, I suppose I could do the forum idea if just to build a list of interested musicians and then build a list of songs as I get permission granted. It is some work for sure, but work well worth the effort. Peace

Do we need permission to play songs from iCompositions on Free Radio Santa Cruz , a commercial free 100% independent pirate radio station running for over 10 years? They have the blessings of the City Council, although tech illegal. They make no money.

I know many of the hosts. I think it would be a great thing for many here to have their songs played on Air, which also streams worldwide. Do I need permission for each song? I am thinking of doing a weekly show of all independent music from the web covering many genres. People could also call in and comment live etc. If the answer is no. Can I post a forum question allowing people to give permission there? Or do I need to go to each song and get express permission that way? I am trying to figure out how to provide the widest variety. I have to present my show idea to the Radio Stations Collaborators. I want some feedback from other musicians as well as Icomp management before I do. Thanks! Deadcowkid
who wants to do a video with me? 3 years ago
Hello,
I am very new to the site here but was drawn first to your song and then this post. I like the idea of something animated as GumGirl has offered.

I would be happy to help if I can. The problem of pollution and what were doing to our planet is one that is important to me. I would love to help if I can
I think something simple may work best. If the video is too... complicated, or does not go with the music right, people will get distracted to one or the other, missing the real message.

Maybe something simple, but powerful. For instance, some well laid out pictures, art, photo collage. For example, panning into a picture of a gigantic pile of plastic water bottles, and then statistics in some cool maybe hand drawn type face " 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away in the US each hour." or whatever. I cant remember the exact stat, but you get the idea. I have some video editing software, from the easy to the complicated. I have more experience with audio mastering, but if I can help, I would be glad to. I can do green screen. This is all fairly basic stuff. I can do all the fades, wipes, etc, adding of your audio, txt overlays. I do not know CGI or any animation techniques. I wish I did. I also do not have a REAL expensive camera, but a decent digital. I can possibly borrow or rent one. Even a decent $300 digital in cinematic mode helps the video record with a more movie like feel. I have a few good tripods.

I have lots of ideas but will stop here. You may be flooded with help already.

Peace - Tim Santa Cruz Ca.
