How Are You? (Live!) by Tony2008 2 days ago
The performance and production are fantastic, I seriously have nothing to offer in the way of suggestions. I liked the song and felt it had some good drama in the music, but at the same time it's not a record I would run out and buy (unlike some of your other songs, that I would run out and buy). You certainly have a good thing going with your guys, a great power trio . . . can't wait to see you open at the Garden (can you get me decent seats?).
Freedom (Performed LIVE!) by Tony2008 2 days ago
Even better than the studio mix (in some respects). I love the energy of the "live" sound. Obviously it's not as clean as the other mix, but it sounds great. You know I like to song, so that's a no brainer. The production on this recording is REALLY good for a live performance. If I was to suggest anything, it would only be for a little reverb on the whole thing, especially vocals and drums, the dry guitar is working great as is, maybe nothing needed for that unless boosting the guitar midrange in the EQ helps push it more to the front (might be too late for that, now that I think of it). This was really cool to hear.
Selective Amnesia (ruff cut 2012) by Tony2008 3 months ago
Love the heavy opening, nicely maintained through the whole song. This is incredible for a three hour creation. The solo kicks A**! But the way it's mixed, despite your crazy wailing, it feels contained within the song, not breaking out at the seams. I like the riffs and lyrics. Great song all around. I wish I could be as productive with 3 hours of my time.

My Nerd Girl (fixed) by Tribrix 7 months ago
Thank you, everyone, for such helpful advice and kind words:

@jamo I tried putting the insturmental chorus at the front, as you suggested, and it's really cool.

@jkane you are so right, I always make my vocals too wet (it's the shy-I-don't-like-my-voice monster rearing its head). I took some reverb and echo off the vocals and they sound much better. I haven't re-written or re-recorded the vocals yet, but I will for the final mix.

@KCsGROOVE In my latest mix, I actually improved the bass part a bit by adding more texture, but I didn't change the arrangement to much.

@Vixen That is great advice, kind of where I was headed sometimes in the current version, but I will amp that up when I re-record the vocals for the final version.

@morgan102 You are right about that ending. I have fixed it in my current mix.

@RetroTrend I'm so looking forward to your thoughts. Thank you for the consideration.

@Xolv I think that's great advice and would solve a repetition problem I have with the chorus.

@woofer3 Thank you so much for that link. I'm always looking for more advice on my music making, especially where chord progressions come into play.

@MH2010 Thank you for listening. I will keep writing and recording (look for another one soon, though I am much slower than Tony, lol).

Thanks again everyone!

OMG, I'm blown away and love this. It's amazing the sound you have here and I'm really digging the composition too. Awesome! I wish you were on iTunes. I want to download your album, but bandcamp isn't going to work for me (much as I love them). It's pretty easy to get on iTunes through CD baby, but of course, it's not free. Great luck with your record though. I hope it does great.
Pink Floyd Cover, Another Brick In The Wall (Long Version) by Rodrish 7 months ago
I haven't caught too many Floyd covers here on iComp, so I'm vary happy to get the chance to listen to this one.

And you have not disappointed people who like the original. It is faithful enough to be instantly recognizable, yet, it sounds very fresh and newly made.

To my ears, these compositions by Mr. Waters and crew are kind of timeless, so it's very fitting to revisit them and record them new.

I think, if I was to offer a single criticism, it would be opting for sampled orchestral instruments instead of using synth sounds. Obviously, your choice keeps the sound closer to the original, but I think this is a case where a change would have been beneficial.

Your performances are fantastic. It's not easy to reproduce the nuanced aspects of this track, and you've done it so perfectly, while leaving your own stamp on it too. Great job. I really enjoyed this a lot.
The Tears of Noah. by ant 7 months ago
it's interesting, this track is mostly about your solo piano playing, but that synthesizer in the background is doing a lot for the piece, like making it feel like so much more than a piano solo alone would, even playing this same composition. Wonderful playing and composing, btw. Really enjoyed.
What I Should Already Know by ScubaScissors 7 months ago
It sounds like musical theater, but, I would not use that category unless it's actually part of a musical. So, in this case, I think it's pop (since iComp doesn't have a "singers and standards", "vocal" or "adult" category.)

It's very beautiful and I enjoyed it, even if it's not the kind of music I listen to everyday. I think the highlight for me was the rhythm of your voice as you sang. It could have been sung many ways, but you chose a method that piqued my interest and kept me listening. Good job.
too many bobbies by woofer3 7 months ago
"Life is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you're going to get"

I never imginged to hear anything like this on iComp. It's sound like church music, in everything but the lyrics, but, then it sounds like it's all you singing (I'm just guessing). Which kind of takes it away from the church choir feel (or should, but doesn't). It's strange, to me, but in a very compelling way. Not a strangeness I'm put off by, but one which stands out to me as being kind of the essence of the work. Very interesting and an enjoyable listen, I must say. Good work.
Gwen by MusicLeft 7 months ago
Rarely does music, which occurs, by it's nature, over a matter of time, convey the feeling of a moment, but this does that. I feel the passage of time, as I listen, but I feel, at the same time, like I am frozen at the point where the track started. It's a completely emotional response, I know, but it's so very cool, almost surreal.

Wow, that chorus is so nice. It sounds like an actual chorus, lol. Like the song too, light and bouncy, for a song about hurt. Very enjoyable listen.
While The Clouds Pass by Henno 7 months ago
I agree with eagle, it does have a bit of 70s feel to it. I really dig it. If you'd told me I could be so enamored of a recording featuring only voice and acoustic guitar, I'd have doubted it. But it manages to not only hold my interest but really engage me. Tough to do with such a minimal pallet of musical colors. Great job.
Red Bandana by ClayPotts 7 months ago
It may come of no surprised to anyone that this kind of southern/country rock is not at all my thing, BUT, I'm really enjoying this tune. The production and performance are tops, if not radio ready, then pretty darn close. But ignoring all that, the song is fun and enjoyable, which must at least be part of what anyone is after. Great work guys. I'll happily listen to anything you two put together.

@Tony

I may be going off on a tangent that has no bearing on what you or MH2010 said, but I read some old school recording engineer's post about mixing in the digital age and he said something interesting that really seems to have helped me a bunch of times.

according to him

In the analog days, we always wanted to get the VU meters up as high as possible without distorting or over-saturating the tape. The purpose was to get the best signal to noise ratio. However, I have noticed in the digital age (where there is, essentially no noise) that it's best to aim your VU meters (or your virtual meters) to peak much, much lower and leave a lot of head room, which you can make up for by boosting the master faders much higher in mixdown. Somehow, it makes the mix sound less noisy and more spacious. Theoretically, it shouldn't make much difference, but in my experience, it does.

Bela Lugosi's Dead (Junk Circuit Mix) by robby_reverb 7 months ago
I don't think it's the first time I've said I like your version better, but this is another time I can say that. I like the Bouhouse version, but I prefer this one. It feels more musical to me and I like things when they are more dance oriented.
Busted (5:57) by MH2010 7 months ago
Really nice composition and performances are top notch, total studio quality with no noticeable mistakes or flubs of any kind.

The mix is solid and really highlights the natural sound of the instruments.

It's nice to hear the warmth of analog tape in this DAW age. It's super clean with great high end detail. I hear minimal tape hiss, which is nice, given the age of the recording.

Nice to hear something kind of vintage that is also fresh like this. It may be a little bit dated but not in any way that prevents it from being very enjoyable today.

P.S. was the car sound at the end taken from vinyl? I heard some pop and crackle.
Nausicaå (of the Valley of the Wind) by Tony2008 7 months ago
Tony!!!

OMG, I love this. It's just fantastic. Excepting the detailed info from MH2010 above, you have become a master producer. I do hear a little of what sounds like over-saturation in the loudest parts, but the mix and everything else sounds just fantastic. And the composition is so cool. Watch for me to DL and stick this in heavy rotation on my iPod. Awesome man! Awesome!

It's really beautiful, both in performance and execution, but especially from the sentiment and inspiration. I don't have to be a fan of the genre of music here to be moved. Really wonderful work, kind of timeless too, not new sounding, but far from out of date.

This is so my style of track. I love those echoey guitars and the plaintive vocals. It's all just perfect for my taste. I could listen to this all day long. I'd only like something more uptempo, but done in the same kind of style (if you guys are up for it). But it's just awesome as it is. Love it.

All is well that ends well III by Narananda 7 months ago
The opening of this really soars up there. Continuing, it holds that lofty position and makes the listener feel like they are flying. Then, danger, something is amiss, and I worry I will fall. But then the music reassures me, all is well, before a new threat appears (sounds like timpani). The music reassures again, but then the drama continues. It concludes on a kind of questioning note. Very nice journey. I enjoyed it, and I thought the orchestration was inspired and interesting for the strong composition.

There's a certain arrythmic aspect to this in the intro that is so compelling and really sets the stage for what comes later, when it picks up in tempo. Inventive and enjoyable. Can't ask for more than that, imo.

Always a pleasure to hear your wonderful 80s vibes Mark. Though I respect your desire to credit the LaLaLaLas it has such a timeless quality to it that it's hard to pin down exactly who to credit, even it the Primitives inspired you here, they probably got inspired by something early. But that just my 2 cents (probably worth less than that, lol). Have you ever put an album together, I'd be interested to hear one from you, start to finish, crafted like an album with different tempos and vibes in each of the songs. I'm sure you have enough raw material now, if you haven't done one already, I hope you will.

@AshleyBeanHead I prefer the '84 Camaro, but that Trans Am will do nicely with this tune

Love to hear you sing Dani. This song is great, everyone stepped up to produce something wonderful. My head is bobbing and there is a smile on my face as I listen. The only think I would do is boost the vocal a smidge. Otherwise, it's radio ready and much better than the majority of the crap that gets played. Great work.

Before I hit play I knew this would be awesome, because anything Andy Fox touches is pure gold in my book. In my long absence from iComp I've continued to listen to iCompers on my iPod, and anytime anything from Andy comes on, I get a smile on my face.

Great song Sabine. Great mix and arrangement Andy. You guys should collaborate more.

I had to go listen to the original first, and I love what you have done with it. Amazingly great rendition. It goes with the original so well, yet updates it and makes it more exciting without changing the original style at all. I don't know how you managed that, but it's amazingly cool.
Weather (demo Mix) by C_Man 7 months ago
you are well on your way to a hit with this one. I can't believe it's in "demo" form, because it has a very "finished" feel so far. I love everything about it so far, zero criticisms or complaints. It only needs to be longer, honestly.

Wow, I love the sparse production style. It's so refreshingly honest for these days. And so well done, I feel like I"m in the room with you listening.

Your performance is top notch too. You're delivering the goods, but not overselling it in any way. The guitar and harmonica playing is spot on.

The only thing I might change is to bring up the vocals a touch compared to the other insturments, but otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing. Great work.

I agree those vocals kick *ss. Great backing tracks too. Nothing lacking in this track at all. I love the guitar tones. Might like the drums a little louder, but that's being nit picky on a great track like this.

@eagle Thank you so much for listening and for the advice. I agree with rewriting some of the lines.

@pharmakeus Thank you for listening and commenting. I think I know just the place for a break and will add one for the final version. I think it was bobsixstringer who once called me "Devo with a knife". I like that description and don't mind a Devo comparison. It seems fitting.

LOL smiley

It was true about the video equipment in the day (maybe now too). I was thinking a lot about Slim Bob lately. I haven't watched it in years.

I'm always confusing the sm57 with the sm58. I have two of the latter and I cannot get the kind of tone I want out of them so I've been using my Behringer C-3, which seems to be helping. Ima have to try some of your techniques. The C-3 sounds good, but it's so sensitive, lol.
Missing The Point by Nicklaus 7 months ago
This is my kind of groove. I love the heavyness, mixed with synth. Reminds me of 80s metal in that respect. But it always feels current and timeless (probably the classical influence there). Great thing so far. My only negative is I'd like to hear a little more reverb as the mix sounds a little on the dry side, but that's a very minor detail in an otherwise great track. Can't wait to hear more.

Nothing wrong with the vox on my box. LOVE that super heavy sound, amazing how you got that. I remember back in the day you were always a better musician with better gear than me, and you continue to show that to be the case. I'm lucky to know you and get to hear you work. This is so cool. Thanks for the recording tips too. Maybe one day, I'll sound this good, though I've given up playing this well (just kidding, never give up, never surrender). lol

Immigrant Song (LZ Cover) by Tony2008 7 months ago
First, Tony, This is effing amazing. WOW. I'm kind of tired of the original, so having this new version breathes new life into it for me.

Having said that, one of my complaints about the original is the over saturation of the main guitar part (burying the RF meters, it sounds like). And, faithful to that, yours sounds like that too. I wonder if it's possible to produce a mix with more dynamics and less forced compression? Did you try a mix that way and decide it lacked the vibrancy of the original? It may be that Jimmy Page had it right in his original mix, but I'd be curious to hear an alternate version, if you are inclined.

Great trick for the vocals. It really shows and sounds fantastic. I love your Zep covers, but this is the best yet.
Love, At Last by Naaji 7 months ago
Having been gone a while, it's nice to see where people are these days with their music. I think you sound a little more complex and your production is better than what I remember. Joy to The World 2010 by Tony2008 1 year ago
One of my all time favorite Christmas tunes. I remember, nearing midnight, in church, how loud joyous this song was performed (often to the sound of brass, percussion, and woodwinds, backing up the choir and organ). I thought the feeling of the moment was so well conveyed by this song. Your version here is more mellow, but I'm glad you chose to do a happy version, because, after all, it is "JOY" to the World, not Sad to the World. I've also covered this tune and I'd call mine happy. I like the quirky arrangement and vocals. The mix is sweet. Great job Tony.

Kind of gives me an OMD vibe, and who could complain about that. I love the production on the chorus, it really sparkles and shines, and hooks you in much more than the verses do, though they are enjoyable on their own. Has a nice melancholy feel, but maybe ABH is right and a sweeter mix could liven it up even more.

Fantastic music aside, you've made Longfellow sound contemporary with your wonderful composition. I'm not sure why it works either, maybe the slightly retro sound is just as reflective as the poem, and therefore even more fitting. But it's often not helpful to dissect something too much, so I'm just going to congratulate you two and call this a success. Great job.

Bing, you've set Cee up perfectly with this track. Every thing is just right for him to come in and sing, which is actually selling you short a bit, because i bet it sounds fantastic without vocals, judging by what I hear.

Cee, you're bringing just what this track needs to finish it off. Your delivery is right on and totally fits with what Bing gave you to work with.

Great jobs guys. A real winner.
No Tears in Heaven by Tony2008 1 year ago
Great tune Tony. The recording is superb, honestly, beautiful. Listening to each instrument is easy and they all sound incredible, esp the guitar and drums. Now, I love loud drums, but they sound a little louder than your vox, which doesn't sound quite right for a studio recording, but does mimic what it would probably sound like live, so I wonder if that's what you were going for. It is fantastic though, I'm just beside myself at the quality of this track. Kudos man.

[over]flow -ruff by Tony2008 1 year ago
As the guitar comes in, the drums stop, and I wish they would continue, because as soon as the guitar started I missed the drums. From there, I like what happens in this track, even if it's a little slow for my taste (I like a higher BPM, but that's no criticism worth anything). I like the instrumental section about 2/3 of the way in, something really cool about that. Knowing this is a ruff, I'm hesitant to say much about the mix, but something seems off about the vocals. Not your performance, but the production. I can't tell if they're too wet, or need some mid boost or what, but somehow they aren't sitting right in the mix to me. Otherwise, a really nice tune there Mr. T. Enjoyed.

Another fine beauty of a track Mr. Tony. I love it. You play your guitar just like ringin' a bell. I hope you know how awesome you are. I am curious though, when you say, "The drums were some old vintage ludwig kit with a black beauty snare" does that mean you went and got a drum kit or is it a sample of said kit (cause I could see it both ways and can't tell). Your production is great too. It sounds noisier than what I've come to expect from you recently, but it fits the work, so nothing to complain about. Fantastic job.

Good Times Bad Times (Led Zeppelin Cover) by Tony2008 1 year ago
I agree with your assessment that this is a song of the 60s, and sounds dated. But, it also has a great quality about it, something cool you can't quite put your finger on. I love what you're doing with that tele, giving old Jimmy a good run for his money. Your vocals are hot too, but I'm not feeling it with the drums, and I don't blame you on that account, because I don't think the drum part of this song is as interesting as the rest of the track. It's not an uninteresting drum part, but probably part of why the song isn't as 'timeless' as other Zep tunes. Great cover, once again. I love hearing these and almost want to make a request myself . . . if I could just figure out which song to ask for . . .
Dazed And Confused (Led Zeppelin Cover) by Tony2008 1 year ago
Channeling Jimmy Page really well there, I almost forgot I was listening to Tony. I tried to pay special attention to the drums, and they do sound AWESOME. I had a very hard time imagining that they were not real (do you used a midi trigger drum kit, because It has that kind of flavor. I used one of those big slabs with 8 pad sections, like the one by Roland and Alesis, tough mine is by Ion). If you programmed these with anything else, I'm going to be really impressed. Your vocals are your own, but still manage to give Mr. Plant a run for his money. I love the energy you get out of this, because it totally rivals the original IMO. This is really impressive. I can't believe you are such a rock monster my friend.

Loops or no, it's so cool to see a track from you up here. That said, it's a loopy tour de force, with style change ups to drool over (I think I recognize that one there, probably used it myself). The bass solo at the end was my fave. Very sweet.

Thanks Doc.

(And Virtuals, come out of retirement for one more track, Please! But know if you do that I'm going to say the same thing again later, lol.)

I don't throw the term 'radio ready' out willy nilly, but this tight little ditty is. Not just because the wound is top notch, but you are all performing with the perfection needed to sell records on the AM and FM bands. What a rare treat this is, though it's totally outside of the genres of music I like. Fantastic work guys. I hope you get out there and market this.
LOVE'S WAYS by KCsGROOVE 1 year ago
Love the smoky drums and electric piano, two of my faves. Really great song too. I really like your vocal performance on this and the synths are really working well, nice sparing use of them which gives good emphasis when they come in. Really love that "flanger-esqu" sound at the end too. Great one C.
Some Innocence by Naaji 1 year ago
It's the nexus of Enya, Souixsie, and Kate Bush, all of whom I love, love, love. More mellow than I prefer, but otherwise, I think it's one of your best yet (among the smattering I have heard, mind you). It's beautiful and intriguing, like the artist herself. Kudos R.
Bulls on Parade (RATM cover) by Tony2008 1 year ago
Once again, you are covering something I've never heard, and doing a great job. I think your rapping is quite good. I don't know how you compare to the original, and the only negative I hear is maybe you holding back a little because you're nervous about doing it, but mostly you're going for it, like you should, and it sounds great. I love the heavy guitar with a little bit of a funky vibe. And I agree that the bass part is cool (sound like it's fun to play too). Really nice work man. Totally dig it.
Lords of Karma (Joe Satriani Cover) by Tony2008 1 year ago
I don't know the original, but this is so hot, it makes me want to check it out for comparisons sake. That said, I really like your production. Obviously, your playing is flawlessly inspired. What I like though is how clear the recording is, especially that guitar tone, wow. Your playing and producing are working hand in hand to deliver something wonderful, via Mr. Satriani's composition. Great work Tony, I mean that too. You set a very high bar and still continue to impress me.

"Alright couples only on the floor, this is a couples skate only"

Another great 80s tune, but in contrast to Doc, I think it sounds more like '87. I love what you do M, always a pleasure.
I Cant Get Enough Of That Stuff by Dyl 1 year ago
I noticed the interesting percussion right away, and I totally like that you decided to include it. It gives the song a unique kind of sound. It's a great choice btw, I haven't heard this song before, but I really like it. Great job.
Fear of Happiness by fromano 1 year ago
I liked this as soon as it started, but when I first heard that ping pong echo of the guitar a big smile came across my face, "this is going to be good" I thought, and I was right. Beautiful song, expertly crafted and played. Wonderful.

You sound really great. All your performances here are fantastic, spot on great. You're voice is exactly the place it should be, and totally keeps me focused on what you are singing. But, I do have one small suggestion. The piano sounds like it has a little bit of reverb, but the voice and drums do not, which, in mind mind, kind of takes me out of the recording space, where I become distracted by the technique. My suggestion is to put a little bit of reverb on the vocals and a little more on the drums, to really lock all of this into the same space. Your music is great and it deserves to sound perfect. Call me a fan.

OMG I love this. I has elements of a novelty song, but t doesn't go there really, it stays both humorus and serious at the same time. I love your style and with I sounded more like this. It's brilliant. Thank you for sharing this.
STONE ASH AND WHALEBONE by geoffuk 1 year ago
I have to apologize if I've said this before, but this wonderful track echoes Gamalon in my mind, and I totally love this track. I like how the percussion is pushing the thing along while the brilliantly played guitar does it's own thing at its own pace. Totally sweet. Great track.
OLD LETTER by Barretok 1 year ago
B - This is bigger much more upbeat than most of the tracks I've heard from you. It's still got your trademark style, no doubt, but I like hearing you in this different direction. Of course, you're still giving it your all in the vocals, but it feels like the other instruments have more presence in this one. On the downside, it sounds a little over saturated. That could just be my equipment, but you might want to check it too. Thanks for this great track. Another instant classic from Barretok.

Really nice way to have an upbeat tempo and a gentle groove. Very delicious work, makes me so happy I stopped by. Keep making them like this. Awesome.

Very original and inventive. Sometimes, that's an offhanded criticism, but not here. I found myself surprised and engaged by what I heard. It's unlike anything I've heard before, yet totally accessible. Great work.
Dancing romantic necromancer by ant 1 year ago
I love the contrast between the gentle piano and voice melody to the edgy sharp drums. I wanted this to go on and on, and felt like it could have. It ends much too soon, and that is my only complaint. Other wise, great job, both or you.

I've been thinking of getting into the 'found' sounds business, and this convinces me that it's a good idea (the sound of my hand banging on the side of the bath tub is like no drum I've ever heard). But, not only do you have creative sounds, you're using them to great effect. I'm totally into this. Fantastic stuff.
