Justin began with music at an age younger than he can recall. His parents took him to see a live concert of percussionists. When he got home, all he wanted to do was play drums, so his mother handed him a pair of chopsticks and let him bang away at various objects in the kitchen. A few years later, Justin began piano lessons, but soon discovered he preferred to invent his own music rather than practice.
Justin began as a largely self-taught composer. Despite having only minimal training in music theory, he went on to be commissioned by the Chico Community Band to arrange a Christmas medley, which premiered during his first term of college at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Shortly thereafter , Justin entered and won the UCSB Orchestral Composition with his piece "Trebia: Transitus Hannibalis,” even though he had not yet studied orchestration. Justin continued to have his music performed during college, including several pieces choreographed by the UCSB New Music and Dance Collective. In 2009, Justin received a grant from the City of Chico to write a musical depiction of Chico's history, premiered the same year. He graduated from UCSB in 2010 with a B.M. in composition.
