Biography
Name: Armin Heurich
Listing favorite artists is always problematic and difficult for me, but what the hell, as a reference point, I enjoy gothic post-punk, such a Joy Division, proto-punk such as The Velvet Underground, punk such as X, Gang of Four, The Mekons and the Minutemen, hardcore honky-tonk, such as George Jones, Buck Owens, Hank Williams, Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Rose Maddox, Lefty Frizzell, Faron Young etc., so-called art rock such as Eno and The Residents, western swing of all varieties, and all stripes of alt country, such as Son Volt, Whiskeytown, Freakwater, Flatlanders, Robbie Fulks, Johnny Dowd, The Handsome Family, The Meat Purveyors, Old 97's, Split Lip Rayfield, Steve Earle, Dave Alvin, Shaver, Paul Burch, Alejandro Escovedo, Wayne Hancock, The Bad Livers...the list goes on for miles and in many directions, so I'll stop now.
I've been doing home recording since the early '80s with a Fostex 4-track, and even before that with a reel-to-reel and a splicer. In fact, my first experience with audio editing was in middle school, when we learned how to splice audiotape and make tape loops. I was hooked for life! Another important early experience was listening to WHRW-FM in Binghamton, NY, a free format radio station, which first exposed me to Tom Waits, Bowie, Firesign Theater, Devo, Kraftwerk, and many others. After about a 10-year hiatus of not playing guitar or doing any home recording, I spent a lot of time a few years ago with ProTools Free for Mac OS 9, and then I discovered how fun and easy home recording could really be with GB and GB2. I just acquired a decent condenser mic (MXL 990), so I should be set up for a while. I don't use loops too much, but I do appreciate all the groovy drum and synth tracks and the new musical keyboard feature, as well as the tuner. Since funds are limited, I try to do a lot with a little, and GB has really helped out considerably. Also, the advice of friends has made a difference.
Over the years, I have begun to realize that I am happiest when I'm involved with some sort of creative pursuit, preferably the kind that can transform a simple idea into a finished project in less than a day, however flawed the final project is. This iCompositions site is a real revalation, since it's a community of like-minded individuals who are interested in sharing their passion for this obsessive and fun activity. I don't think of my home recording as anything other than a hobby, but finding an interesting and interested audience has certainly inspired me to create.
In addition to home recording, I am one of 4 hosts of The Salt Creek Show on WVBR-FM, Ithaca, NY. (Listen online at WVBR.com). Salt Creek can be heard every Sunday morning from 6 to 10 am, and features country music outside of the commercial country mainstream—early country, honky tonk, old timey, alt country, bluegrass, gospel, western swing, and even early blues. It's loads of fun, and we love requests.
In the summer of '05 I met Chuck (dunnieboy on iComp), a fellow Ithacan, with similar musical interests and we started to play together. After playing at a party and an open mic event, we decided to give ourselves a name and ramp up our musical activities. We're The El Caminos, and our first official date as a band is June 9th, 2006 at The Nines in Ithaca. Visit our at http://www.theelcaminos.com for more information. We can't wait to start playing out more, and we'll be posting lots of new songs in the near future.
