We never got to work together, and I would love to make that finally happen. Drop me a line if you want, and I'll send crazy new tracks in ya direction and see what happens.

Nice my man! I've came accross this sample a few days ago, it's really beautiful and you chopped it real nice.
DJ Muggs used it straight on the track of Xzibit first album "The foundation". But damn kid layed over another piano sample from Billy Joel : pure genius.

Drums : YEAH. Well ya know me when it comes to Premier type kicks and snares.

Fukc! How could I miss that?!? That's a great tune my friend, with a hell lot of flava to it. If you were going for a vintage sound, you certainly nailed it.
The nice thing with those warm recordings of acoustic instruments is that when you push it hard, the clipping and natural harmonic distortion actually sounds beautiful and add character to the track. You can feel it here.
The Prophecy by uptheirons106 2 years ago
The track is outstanding : very good acoustic beat (love that), nice lyrics and good flow and overall delivery. You have something real nice going on.

Now on the constructive critic side, there's a lot to be told about the mix : it's really not good and doesn't make your track shine the way it should, given all the hard work you've done to create the piece.
First, it's way too loud (limiter abused, here comes the clipping) and over compressed : there's no dynamic at all in the track, everything is equally loud.
The bass should be tighter, it has a lot of sub and mid frequency : give it a low cut or carve a hole in the bass spectrum with EQ to allow the kick drum to kick in between, it should work. You could also use side chaining.
The vocals are actually not that bad mixwise, but they're panned too much to the left, whereas the backvocals are centered: there's no stereo spread. They could also use some gentle, soft-knee compression, and a slight boost of high frequencies (around 12KHz) to give some "air". A little delay would do nice as well.
The rythm guitar underneath the chorus would love a low cut to avoid competing with the bass.
The drums don't have any punch and are pumping way too much : you could use some parallel compression (keep the original signal the way it was tracked, create a bus drum where you send the original signal and compress only the bus).

Ok, hope you find this usefull, and again, this is a great track. i like your approach!
Peace, Alex

This got attitude. Feels like a story telling beat. I almost didn't recognizer the drums loop, because it fits so nicely to the instruments you played. Lover man by DJBE 2 years ago
Ok, if you don't mind, here's some advices :
- the drums at the beginning don't really fit the sample, especially the big "not very jazzy" club clap. When you switch the drums towards the end, you have a much more natural drum sound that really compliment the jazz sample. You should keep it all the way.
- You really hear the gap in the mix between the sample and the drums : a little verb on the drums (very little, or even a subtle delay) together with an overall mix compression to "glue" things together would really help getting a balanced stereo image and the feeling of elements "recorded" together.
- center the kick and snare image, don't pan them left and right unless you want a special effect from it, but not for the whole song.
- put a groovy bass line to phatten it!

Little little tweaks would make this track a killer beat, really!
Hope you don't mind the critics, just trying to be constructive smiley
Peace, Alex

Smooth man. Gotta love Al Green for sampling : 90% of what he did is so hip hop.
Thats Why by DJBE 2 years ago

Excellent! Love the sample (well known but well used), good boom bap drums. Nice break in the middle of the beat. Must have been a nightmare to chop all this in Ultrabeat. I mean, the tool sounds good, can be OK for drums, but for playing samples, it's hell (sounds a bit choppy when repeating the sample for exemple).
A good substitute to a real MPC in the digital world : Motu BPM.

Yo thanks Byear, Medl4 and Gideon (the Western trio)! I hear you Byear on the mix. The headroom is something I always aim for. I'm tired of the loudness war : everything you hear on radio is mashed, without any dynamics. I don't use limiters. Ever. It's as loud as it can naturally be.
The Realness by peptalk 2 years ago
Sample is HUGE. Drums maybe not so much. Well it's only a preview, so I guess you're also looking for constructive comments (as we all are) and that would be mine : match those drums with the sample quality. Kick with more bottom, snare less snapier and maybe not mixed kind of far like it is now (seems "behind" the music if ya know what am sayin?)
This will be a great beat.
Peace, Alex

Thanks man, you really nailed the overall idea of the mix. I wanted it to get that Premier minimalist feel, with clearly identified elements in the stereo field. There's a fair amount of analog modeled gear (SSL, API, Neve) used, but I've so much to learn regarding mixing.

Chill Rusticalia, I didn't write this song (oh my I so wish, but I didn't). It's a very famous classic song originaly written for Dion, but it has been sung by many artists through the years since 1968, my favourite being Marvin Gaye version. The excerpt here is from a french group that I worked with (great singer) who authorized me to cut a piece of the hook (credit at the bottom of description). I didn't think anybody would think those are my lyrics since it's such a well-known song...

This is such a warm welcome... thanks so much Beatle, Medl4, TRF, Rusticalia, Melly and my brothers Gideon and Whispaz!

Medl4, the sound you like is a piano heavily processed : I played it in Logic and applied hipass filter, a classic reverb plate, put it through the Amp designer for guitar tone and put chorus and distortion. It's sits nicely.

I might upload another version where this piano is all over the verses. What ya think???

Tight, love the bouncy bass.
Mix-wise, nothing much to say, it's pretty balanced. Maybe a little tweak on the bass / kickdrum duo : seems there's a little conflict. The bass has a lot of bottom around 120-150 hz. And the kick drum is pretty fat on those frequencies too and you kind of get the "pump" and not the "snap" from it. I would put a hi filter cut on the bass around 150hz, and maybe a little boost on the kick drum around 1khz to give some snap, while cutting the top end (around 3 or 4khz) of the same kick drum to tighten it up.
All I could say man, this rocks!
