Blade Runner by Narananda 3 months ago

Not 10 minutes after finally seeing the Final Cut of Blade Runner I log onto icomp and find this! I love it! The synths are fantastic, and the opening is indeed awesome. I especially like how it never gets repetitive, but isn't all over the place at the same time. A perfect balance.

To be honest, with the percussion, it reminded me more of the videogame 'Mass Effect' which was like a summer blockbuster version of Blade Runner.

Fantastic stuff.

I don't think you understood my analogy (because that's what it was). In fact, now I'm confused...not sure how your bedroom not being in Hollywood has anything to do with this. I just feel like your mix sounds more 'traditional,' like something you'd hear on the radio. It seemed to lose some of the original's, well, originality, with the new mix and vocals (hence the analogy I made...)

It is, technically, very well mixed, and your vocals are good, but I just think it's a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' But that's just me. I wasn't trying to insult you...I wasn't aware that these comments were reserved for praise only. I would hope that, in the future, more people would be able to take 'negative' comments...not ego-boosters.

I apologize for my honesty.

Those dissonant elemental-chord things are the coolest sounds EVER! And that sax...well...I know it's not, but...is it real?????

This is like an F*ed up Jazz Lounge in an alternate reality. It's soothing, but so eerie and unsettling at the same time. The piano is incredible. I'm always impressed (more and more with each song of yours) by your ability to make any software instrument sound as if it's being performed live. It's a hard thing to do, and you excel at it. I've used that muted trumpet many before and NEVER been able to get such a 'performance' out of it. You evil little genius!

I love the title too, it's exactly the mood and imagery I get from this song.
Asylum (Collaboration) by Acreus 5 months ago
It's an interesting idea, but I feel like the new mix and vocals water down the impact the original version had. Perhaps I'm just biased considering how much I enjoyed the original...I just feel like this version is more akin to something you'd hear on the radio...whereas the original version has a more unique sound to it. This is an odd thing to say, but it's like the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre when compared to the new one. The new one, while very well produced, is very much a product of Hollywood.

Here we go again!

I'm getting REALLY sick of gushing over how amazing your work is. Try to screw something up next time, would ya?

It's like I said before...this song is f**king (pardon the language) fantastic. I burnt this AND the instrumental version to a CD now, and it'll end up in my car's CD player for weeks. I love the percussion, it brings everything together into a very professional package, without sounding over-mixed or 'been-there, done that.' The guitar is superb, it's melody is (again) very Silent Hill...but stands alone as an enjoyable and unique creation...as do the ominous lyrics.

I know I've said this to you before, but what I love about these lyrics is the fact that if someone was totally unfamiliar with Silent Hill, they would pull whatever meaning they possibly could from them...there's no one truth behind it. The lyrics, of course, kick *** either way...whether they mean anything or not. smiley

The guitar bridge about 3:20 in is very cool as well. While it would have been neat to hear a little bit of strings in there, it would have been totally out of place. It's nice that you've kept the song grounded in one mood. It has a consistent feeling, as opposed to some songs by certain people (me) that are obnoxiously all over the place and struggling to find their 'sound.'

The final mix came out really well too. The vocals are perfectly balanced, as is the instrumentation/percussion.

Oh what it must be like to think like you. Truly inspired.

You know, I might seem odd for saying this, but I was somewhat surprised by people calling this 'calming.' While the song is fairly soothing, it's sound has strong roots in Silent Hill-esque music, which, no matter how soothing, will always have an unsettling quality. I mean this, of course, in the most complimentary way. The song is not only superb, and a joy to listen to, but it makes me think...or rather...wonder what the hell's coming next...whether it's good or bad, that quality in a soothing song is indeed, unsettling. Bravo! You're music would be the perfect accompaniment to a Silent Hill film done right.

You're a f**king genius sir, and I think you know it.
A World Unseen - Silent Hill Tribute by eurostrike 6 months ago

If they made another Silent Hill that continued #1 and #3's storyline, this song would have to be on the soundtrack. I love the synth chords in the background. Their texture is tranquil and quite peaceful, but the chords themselves are eerrie, it's a scary thought, but it's the kind of thought I can picture someone in the game dying to. You're sick.

I loved the cello you threw in there. (Threw isn't the right word, considering how perfectly woven in it is) I almost want to hear more of it, or have a solo bass with it upon its return toward the end...but the more I think about it, the more I like it the way it is.

kick-***, awesome, creepy, peaceful, unsettling, scary, and beautiful. Silent Hill? Yessir.

It's becoming increasingly interesting to listen to your music (and it started off quite interesting!) to hear how you expand on your ideas throughout the course of each song. The end on familiar melodies, but it's as if it's an avalanche...collecting every little thing as it moves forward, brass, woodwinds, percussion, etc.

I really loved the woodwinds that follow up each burst of brass and percussion near the end. It's a wonderful subtle follow-up to the brassy-ness before it...and I love brass.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but don't take it in a bad way. I've been editing a few Star Trek projects at work lately, and this song (as with some of your others) reminds me a great deal of some of the best Original Series music. It just oozes nostalgia. Fantastic stuff.

I'm a real sucker for harp. It's always nice to hear woodwinds, I find that (in electronically-written music) they seem to be rather underused. Perhaps it's because they're difficult to realistically sample, but I hear no problems with these. The song has a very tranquil sound to it, and (again, perhaps due to the electronic nature of it) was very reminiscent of the music one might here in a fantasy-game (especially something with an old-English feel to it, the oboes toward the middle really sold that).

You have a real knack for creating a melody and expanding on it constantly throughout the song, brining in different instrumentation and having it played differently on the instruments. The staccato strings were a real treat. I liked the introduction of percussion toward the end as well, but wanted more...I felt like it wasn't quite done building, but, that's just me.

Have no fear, the clipping is only on this export...not on the master or the mix.

And...unfortunately, I don't write music for the Paramount projects (I did once, but that's a long story). I'm just an editor/graphics designer that works for a small company lucky enough to get Paramount gigs. Perhaps in the future though! *crosses fingers*
Overkill by anitric2000 9 months ago
Well mostly it's just slapping FX from the bass section, but there are occasional bits of Col Legno on the cellos.

I agree on the trumpet, though, I still perfer it to the VSL trumpets (though, I have yet to hear their 'fanfare trumpets.') The french horn rips are actually mixed with wagner tuba rips...in case anyone noticed.

As for film music, I agree with you to a degree. I mostly prefer older film scores (and newer, less traditional ones - like, anything other than Pirates of the Crapabean). But, there are only a few composers I would actually accuse of being derivative themselves...mostly, I blame the stories, or lack thereof.

Awesome use of woodwinds. The bassoon really gives it an old-school Universal Monsters feel...perfect for the classic 'dark and stormy night' spookiness. The plucked strings were a nice touch as well. This is really random, but I felt like this would accompany a movie of the old Playstation videogame "MediEvil" really well. Random...I know.

I loved the movement of it. Not once did it feel repetitive...but it didn't feel all over the place either...everything seemed to fit and naturally flow from movement to movement (though, I thought the fade out toward the middle could have flowed a little better, I know it's not easy when you don't have a real orchestra to do whatever you want). I also liked the continuity you built with the quick upward strings...and ending on the ocean was awesome...rarely do sound effects fit so well into music like this. I almost wanted to hear the chimes/bell from the beginning return in the end, but I didn't miss them either.

Awesome, really creative piece.

Please teach me how to be less generic!
Cemetary Man by SeanBeeson 1 year ago

Really moving stuff here. I was reminded a bit of some of James Newton Howard's stuff here. The percussion and woodwinds add a really nice flavor to the touching piano melody, and give it an adventurous quality. I can actually see where the name Cemetary Man comes from, the song has a very reflective sound to it. I could be way off, but that's how I took it...and I loved it!

Brilliant. I kept hearing shades of Horner's Star Trek II and Metal Gear I loved the references to Holst's The Planets, I think that really sold the entire piece for me. The orchestration was excellent, very full sounding, anything but dull! The instruments themselves sound wonderful, is this EWQLSO stuff? Gold, platinum? Sounds wonderful!

I've said this all before, but now that you've changed the song for the 100th time, I'll say it again...

I LOVE the synth work, but the guitar really sounds great. Of course, the DnB sounds awesome, and it really gives it a unique sound...along with your awesome voice (which is so well mixed into the song, it all sounds as one...very high production values there). It's nice to see a cover be so original that you can truly call it your own.

There, the abridged version of what I'd written before.

AWESOME!!!! (that was my childish closing remark. Hope you enjoyed)

Hey, I totally know what you mean. I only have "special edition." If I had the symphonic cube...I'd never leave the computer.
The Main Event by anitric2000 1 year ago
Thanks RayLaVeau! To answer your question, the low pulsing synths and long pads are just edited synths available in Garageband. The chirpy and metalic sounds are actually vibraphones, a harpsichord, marimba, and glockenspiel all messed with in good-old garageband.
Phase 5: Climax by anitric2000 1 year ago
All the orchestral instruments and percussion are from the VSL Special Edition...and they've been working just fine in Garageband...keyswitches and all. There are WAY more articulations in the actual individual packages, but the special edition serves my needs for now smiley

These are all just solo instruments too.

Highly recommended!

I haven't heard his score to 1492 (nor have I seen the film) but I love his score to Blade Runner. I'm not a big synth fan...but lately I've been really getting into their use as more of a percussive tool or just accompaniment to the orchestra...that and playing around with them or even weird sampled sounds is a hell of a lot of fun...a great way to give a unique *sound* or trademark sound to a production...much like Gabriel Yared's work on the score to 1408.

*Jaw drops*

Wow. Like I've already said, they're gonna hire you to score the next game. The opening is actually better than any other version of this theme that I've heard...FROM THE GAMES! It's like a mix of the original Tomb Raider games and the new, percussion heavy scores to the newer games (Legend mainly). It's has a TRIII sound to it for some reason, like the end credits to TRIII because of it's more modern approach to the subject but its use of the original themes from 1 and 2. The harp and piano are really the stars of the show though. The percussion adds a very cool driving force to the song, but the quality of the harp and piano are just increadible. Great string and woodwind work in there as accompaniment too. Really just top notch...AGAIN.
Mors Tua Vita Mea by anitric2000 1 year ago
Eidolonia, I think you're right. I don't necessarily thing the trombones sound fake in that section, but they are out of place...both tonally and in the mix. I think I'll replace them with a solo french horn...a little higher, and also to the right of the stereo mix...so it will contrast better with the tuba.

Thanks!
Final Fantasy X - Warping to Another Dimension by Aafarr2 1 year ago
While I love the soundtrack from Final Fantasy X, I think I perfer your orchestration here. You've taken a brilliant theme and added even more emotion to it than before...now that's something. I think I might have to throw this into my Final Fantasy X Playlist so I can hear it whenever I listen to the score. Ridiculously good stuff here...really.

The reverberation on the percussion has a very real sound to it. How do you like Digital Performer? I've been thinking about getting it for scoring a few projects in the near future. (Along with EW's Symphonic Choirs and Dirk Campbell's Origins!)

First of all, I am a massive fan of the "Black" soundtrack. The game was good, but the score is amazing...got it before playing the game, actually.

Putting that aside, this song is fantasic. I especially love the trumpets and horns, they not only have a great sound, but the writing is excellent.

Some camp you attended...must have blown the rest of 'em out of the water with majestic work like this.

Perfectly developed, highly entertaining, emotionally moving, and...well...just good. I love that flute-like synth, it reminds me of the very best of Final Fantasy, which is far from your average video game music. BRILLIANT! Hahaha, those violins...oh, chamber violins, sorry...are stunning! I wish I'd gotten them! smiley

I especially love how raw it sounds...it has such a real...performed quality to it. And the actual arangement of it is nothing short of spectacular...when those cellos and violins play without anything more...about in the middle...it's very reminicent of lost, and then it gets even better...like that was possible!!

I dunno what else to say...uh...

About TIME! Sheesh.

For just the standard version of the special edition my laptop really isn't enough, it's just a Gig of RAM. I needed two projects for this song...one for the Violins, Cellos, Trumpet, and Flute and another one for the Piano and percussion. A G5 will be fine for processing...my computer didn't slow down unless I used up all the RAM...so it's really just a matter of that...RAM.

I have to say...at work I have a MacPro with 6 gigs of RAM and it ran amazing there...the installer even has an option for a PPC Mac or an Intel Mac.

Originality pays off. I don't usually here organ music, nor do I hear it on its own like this. Very well done...an excellent piece of writing and a great performance. A Lack of Subtlety by anitric2000 2 years ago
The timpani (the only drum in there) is actually mixed according to its location in an orchestra, so I'd rather not pan it or center it. The other percussive sounding instrument are actually cellos...and those are also mixed according to where they are...so...yep. Also...there are no synths in this, samples...yes...but no synths.

Thanks though, if I add any more percussion (which I'm thinking of) it'll be electronic...so that'll be panned back and forth all over the place.

You know, you're voice is so good that you don't need all those effects to cover it. That said...those effects really do add a 'cool' factor! This song is...indescribable. I hope eurostrike hears this...the harp is greeeat. Soothing start, even that synth has a relaxing feel to it. The harp melody is beautiful. I like the synths, but it would be interesting to hear with strictly orchestral instruments.

Fantastically complex! This has got some stunning percussion, great trumpet blasts, awesome strings (both the high violins and low cellos/basses?) The use of synths is really quite fantastic too, they sound almost like a part of the percussion (and perhaps a bit influenced by the Terminator soundtracks). Great ending...very emotional...very professional. The bed of strings behind that (amazing) woodwind gives it some real emotional power. Absolutley amazing music. I'd like to see whatever story played out in your head in order for you to write this visualized, it sounds thrilling!

Great woodwind stuff at the beginning, but even cooler percussion/bass. Very original and very inspiring work. It's always great to see a totally orignal classical piece, and this is no exception. I'm not usually a big fan of synths/electronic aspects...but I really enjoyed them here, especially the (almost) overbearing bass. When it ends, the music has this clear sound to it...almost like it's a breath of fresh air. Wonderful work. (Big fan of those strings) Some bits (actually...like when the bass ends) may seem to cut in or out a bit abruptly, but aside from that minor detail, this is really a pleasant listen.

I absolutely adore (yep, I said it) the opening orchestration...It's...well, breathtakingly subtle, yet almost overly-emotional. I mean, that flute (I hope) is enough to bring someone to tears. The breaths the melody takes really give each moment just the right punctuation. I'm not even sure if what I'm writing makes any sense...but my mind is somewhere else after hearing this magnificent piece. I feel for whoever this is or could be about...whatever it represents...if anything at all...it has real emotion to it, real power...and yet it's so soft...how on Earth...I really mean it, how did you do that!? I mean...how old are you!? The maturity and emotion of the writing is greater than what I've come to expect from hollywood composers.

Really enjoyed this. I usually keep to classical sounding music, but this sounded interesting, and surely enough, it's better than that! I especially enjoyed the ending. Very fun.

Wow. I really enjoyed it's grand feeling. but the best part about it is your ability to smoothly transition from a more subtle approach to all out brass-goodness. Always so emotional. You could take a mindless action movie or even video game and make it emotionally meaningful with just your music. The melodies suggest character depth...and the range of sounds expands an entire emotional palette. This is truly magnificent. Tight percussion, sweeping strings, sublte brass, and an absolutley brilliant flute. I can see what you mean by parrot-ish at one or two points, but it's perfect. This reminds me so much of the climactic climb to the top of some mountain in a (classy) video game...driving, emotional, and beautiful. Hands down one of your best pieces, and also totally unexpected...it doesn't seem very "you," while at the same time, sounding totally "you." You've taken your style and adapted it to something different...it's perfect! Amazing...Amazing...Amazing work. It woke me up like 8 cups of coffee and it's 3:45 AM. BRILLIANT!

I don't usually wonder off into the electronica isle here at icomp, but since it was yours, i figured...why not? Damn this is fantastic. The synths all sound crisp and individual, nothing muddled or hidden, it's all perfectly mixed. The percussion is really what drew me in, but the melodies you sneak in there hooked me. Very interesting to say the least. The opening is a real attention grabber. Parts seem a bit dissonant, but that was probably the intention, because they really seem to fit with the overall tone. Such emotion...this song is the best translation of emotion to musical form I've heard on iCompositions. Excellent concept and genuinly superb music. It really makes me feel as if I'm missing someone as well. Perhaps when you pick her up, something more complete (ie. less lonely....not saying the song itself is incomplete) could be written, seeing as you two would be together again. Brilliant work.

I agree with 'DigitalGreyOrchestra,' the voice here is quite good, an excellent choice for this particular work. Though, being an orchestral fan, I would love to hear it in an orchestrated version...though...that may be to Hollywood of me.

Wow, this is impressive. It's reminiscent of James Horner's score to "Aliens." A superb score, by the way, and this is a superb song. A nice treat, deviating from the norm in the 'classical' section here on iCompositions. Excellent work, I envy your talents!

Really quite a beautiful piece. Listening to it (despite how cheesy this must sound) really just made me happy...or, perhaps tranquil is a better word. Once again...beautiful. I applaud you and your talent.

What can I say? I love this song. I remember trying to recreate it when the soundtrack was first released. I gave up and never went back to it once I knew how! But I love this! Though, one can tell the song was not meant for a piano solo, it still sounds great and I still get the essence of the magical and mysterious being (Fawkes) that Williams was scoring. Well done! Well done!

Love the driving sound of this...and the mixing of the loops is quite good. But I'm not a huge fan of loops myself...maily because I've heard the tunes in other songs by different people, which makes it sound a bit less original. But I like what you've done here. It's quite good...and as I said before, (and everyone else seems to) the driving feeling of the song really gives it a strong presence...so many visuals flock to mind when I hear this...nicely done.

Wow, well here's something original sounding! I love the cello here, such a great sound. The harp becomes a little overbearing after a while, but other than that this is a fantastic creating. It seems so unorthodox for SF, but that's what I love about its sound! Brilliant work.

The mixing here (listened with headphones) was superb. Very sweeping at times, intense/dramatic as well...reminded me of decently scored video games or older epic's. Excellent work.

Thanks! Just so it's clear...the only loops are the percussion/beats...nothing else that's melodic (piano, guitar's strings...etc...)

The sound and feeling this piece gives off is startlingly perfect. It's beautiful and has a sound unlike other things I've heard on here. It possesses an almost haunting (but in a good way!) feeling of nostalgia...it's increadible. It feels like something I've heard in several of my favorite documetaries about the time period/location that music like this is commonly associated with. It's beautiful. Superb work, I love it!

The ambient noise is a little evident when I've got headphones on...but you know what, it adds to the realism and atmosphere. It actualls works to the songs benefit I think. The bass can sometimes be a bit too loud, blocking out other instruments a bit too much, but that's so rare and the rest of it is so good that it really doesn't even matter!

Simpley stunning and fascinating. Unlike anything I've heard on here and it's quite refreshing. The sounds you've created here with the two instruments are hipnotic. This is astonishingly good work. Thank you for sharing.

Only suggestion is running it through another program to lower the ambient hiss...unless that's what you're going for, it did create a visual of these two instruments actually being performed (unlike the clean digital world where it all sounds fake)

Brillaint...the strings are beautifully arranged and that choir! Wow. We've already talked about this, but you should know again how amazing this is. And that voice (kellynicolemoran) it's fantastic and everything just really seems to flow. The ending is perfection. Increadible work! Both of you!

I've been waiting for this for a while! Love it! The brass in the opening sounds much better this time around, very very real. Breathtaking music here, excellent job. Nothing I can complain about, except that I hope that one day I can write as well as you.

PS-Some very interesting (and very welcome) additions here! Wonderful!

Digital Performer...I shall look into that, no question. Thanks for the tip! Yeah, everything I've written is so much less and small compared to the stuff I want to do because of the limited instruments. I bought the first Jam Pack, which was great for a week with the new strings, then I got over it and needed brass! Anyway, trust me, I hear serious epic Zimmer in this. I've found myself listening to your song more than The Ring soundtrack (my most recent Zimmer purchase) because yours is so much more inspiring. I was actually thinking how hard it was to write melodic scores...and here's a perfect example of one. You have some serious talent here and I can't wait to hear more!

Hmm, speaking of music, I need to go upload my latest score now...everything I've got on here is outdated.

Once again...amazing job here !

Excellent strings, first of all, and the entire song together is quite beautiful. What else can I say? I think the 2nd part, after the opening strings bit, is much stronger.

Well I must say...WOW...this is quite good, no...simply fantastic. The strings are particularly excellent, sounding quite real with their specific use in this song...quite moving if I do say so myself. The horns, however, could use a little bit of a slower release. The french horn, if that is what I'm hearing, seems to cut off a bit to soon after each note, giving it an almost reversed sound. Before each note ends, however, they sound perfect...that's my only suggestion. Take it or leave it, this is fantastic. Great job. It sounds like many Hans Zimmer 'epic' scores, but with a new spice of originality, which is why I love it so much, keep up the good work! Amazing!

-This seriously convinced me to buy the 4th Jam Pack

Being interested in film scores myself, I must say this is brilliant. I love the old-fashoned style of it with the brass/woodwinds and lovely string instruments. Shades of old horror films. Excellent! This was a wonderful test of the 4th Jam Pack and has proven to me it will provide everything I wanted. Thank you for sharing such an excellent piece!
