Thanks, Beengeleiding, for the kind words about the vocals and for the ideas about that hard-to-wrangle guitar track. That's what my friend called it when she was working on processing the song for me. I did have some ideas for re-doing it, adding harmonica, etc. But who knows when (if) I'll ever get around to it. It'll probably just have to stand the way it is, because I've gone in a different direction all together now. C'est la vie...

Thanks, again, Beegeleiding. Nice to meet you!

So good to hear you at your Art again, Dani. Good, indeed.

You've given me an idea. I may get some files together and show how a song sometimes begins as the vaguest of notions; then show how it develops over time, with rough edges galore, especially early on when I may be just working out the tune in my head.

I really think you should post your wonderful analysis of your song, Joanna. I read it after I listened to your song and I am amazed by both. This is eerie and haunting and emotional and a more fitting tribute to the horrors of Katrina I cannot imagine.

Ode To Dad by RAVENS 3 years ago
Ravens, you Enchantress. I love this song. I know, I know, it's a song about suffering and pain, both emotional and physical, and about feeling and about not feeling... I have known cutters and I can't tell you how this song affects me. Somewhere deep down in my guts. I was moved to tears by it. I've read quite a bit of material about this, trying to understand what goes on in my friends' minds and souls when they cut themselves. But nothing made me understand it...

Til I heard your song. Thanks, Ravens. Now I get it.

Thank you, andreas. I read many of Solzhenitsyn's books, many years ago. I've loved the old man since I discovered him when I was in high school. I didn't even realize he had died until I saw your new musical work. A marvelous tribute to a marvelous man. I salute you! bama smiley

Oh, you're right, Eido. That was something I did pre-upgrade and pre- a lotta reading and studying too. The only song I've done since I've learned more is Home Town. All the others suffer from some pretty horrible flaws that come from not having any idea what I was doing. Other than having a blast, that is. But you're right, as usual. smiley

I can add reverb to the whole project through ACID or through SoundForge. I just didn't because I didn' know any better. I think this one may be the only one I still have the original files for, other than the a capella Beloved. I'll eventually go back and record some of the old stuff. Some of it will just have to stay the way it is, I'm afraid. I'm already hearing too many new songs in my head. smiley

Thanks, Eido. I always look forward to your comments because I want to learn. bama smiley

Best Thing by bama 3 years ago
Oh, yeah, I know about the sibilance on there. I need a de-esser, don't I? I added a pop-screen to my audio arsenal, so that will help in some ways. Best Thing was recorded on my old $50 mike too. So I could record it, only, I don't really know that I can. There are so many layers to that thing and I was there then, my mind was there then. I don't really know that I could do it again.

Especially the higher parts. That was 3, almost 4, years ago. For me to sing higher, it has to be a really good day: the humidity's not too high, the temp inside and out is not too high and not too low; my throat and other parts are behaving; the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars. You know, that kind of good kind of day. Oy. smiley

So, no, I don't think I'll be re-recording this one. I couldn't if I wanted to. smiley

I especially loved your advice: "whatever you did here, do this instead of whatever you did then." Heh. Um, yeah. I'll have to go back and listen and see what you mean. This is one of the very first things I ever did when I got the old mike and Cakewalk software, after buying ACID and my first set of loops. I'm still amazed by how well it turned out.

Thanks again, Eido smiley Thank you for taking the time to listen to these and write out what you think. I'm learning a lot from you. smiley bama smiley
Beloved, a capella version, 3 voices by bama 3 years ago
Thanks, Eido smiley Now see, that's what I mean about a capella. I have several a capella pieces and they're just so easy to do. No hassling with loops or how to play this or if I could only do that. Nope, I just sits me down and I sings. That's what I really love to do. All the getting bogged down in the technical side of things drives me nuts. I just wanna sing!

Thank you, Eido, for noticing the production, as in, lack of. That was exactly what I was going for. Just me, and myself and I, singing our hearts out. That, to me, is when music is just plain ol' fun!

Run Away by bama 3 years ago
Yes, I did improvise the song and it worked out beautifully on this one. Not all my improvs are this, well, fortunate. smiley This one turned out amazingly well. Now what I have to do is go back in and start over and re-do it. I've been reluctant to do that because it's been so popular the way it is. But I would love to hear how it would sound with my new mike and my new USB interface so it wouldn't be going through my crappy old soundcard that my computer came with. I'm sure it would sound like a whole new song. smiley And maybe my friend Solo would help me with it too, then it would be a great song and not just a good one, huh?

Thanks, Eido. smiley You've helped me a lot by telling me what you think and I appreciate it. smiley bama smiley
Home Town, song for a warrior by bama 3 years ago
Hello again, Eido smiley

Yeah, the mike is an AKG Perception 220, large diaphragm studio condenser mike with its own shock absorber cage thingy. I bought a Shure SM57 for my guitars and a boom stand for it. So I'm all set up to go.

I think joining this site has been really good for me because it is forcing me to get out from behind the loops. I may still use them from time to time. But I think from here on out I'm going to play and sing the way I used to, before I started leaning too heavily on the loops. Especially since I can record the guitar and the vocals separately. I won't have to worry about singing and playing at the same time.

Time to be a singer-songwriter again. A real one.

Thank you, Eido. You are absolutely right. Thanks for saying it. smiley bama smiley
Words, a love song by bama 3 years ago
You're absolutely right about the snare being too loud and it needs fixing. I think it was part of that whole drum track, it's not separate pieces. And the structure thing, you're right about that too. Yes, the loop structure is constraining. I'd love to be able to play what I hear in my head. The MIDI and VST instruments are available but I find that I have a very hard time using them. I'm learning but I have a very long way to go in that regard.

Now as to my voice...Thank you for your faith in it. smiley I'm working on some more a capella's and some pieces for voice and guitar. A capella's are freeing for me, no worries about how to make things work, no trying to force my song into some pre-fab mold. And with me playing the guitar, I can do some things to vary it, even though I'm not at all a virtuoso on the guitar.

What I really need are some musicians and someone who knows how to do the things I want to do and am always hearing in my head. That would be wonderful. smiley Any volunteers? smiley

Thank you, Eido. Those were just the words I needed to hear. smiley bama smiley
Home Town, song for a warrior by bama 3 years ago
Howdy, Cesare smiley

Yeah, I thought I had corrected for that. Somehow I recorded all the vocal on the left channel. I duped the track and tried to pan to adjust for it. But then I think Solo put the vocal on the left and the guitar on the right.

That guitar loop was driving her crazy, it was so processed on the CD I got it off of. And my vocals were overdriven until part way through the first chorus when I realized it and backed off.

We're learning, and I have a long way to go. The reason I didn't start over with this one is I have to go with the voice when it's working. I had been singing for a good part of the day, recording my first version, then added a second, then this one came along. I simply couldn't do another take. I can't do it even now. Throat issues.

But keep an eye out for the other ones when I post 'em and let me know what you think about 'em, okay? smiley

Thanks again, Cesare smiley bama smiley

Howdy, telo smiley I didn't mean to skip your comment, just realized that I did. Oops! I agree with you. Personally, I think it needs a whole lotta work. The lyrics need to be chopped up and much needs to be cut out completely. When I write fiction, I write and write and then cut mercilessly. I need to do the same when I write songs, especially if I'm going to compose at the microphone. Although, some of those improvs are more successful than others. smiley But I heartily agree with you. I'm such an amateur!

I can say that this is one of the first times I've finished a song in the wee hours and proclaimed it a minor masterpiece (stop laughing), without having to cringe and nearly pass out from embarrassment, having uploaded it to the blog in that same haze of "new song adrenaline." You know, post the song at 3am, fall into a dazed sleep, wake up at 8am in a cold sweat, "What the h*ll did I do?! I didn't post that shlop, did I?" smiley

Thanks, dirigent smiley Your Words mean a lot to me. (I can't help it, I can't!) bama smiley

Words, a love song by bama 3 years ago
Howdy, Zallaz smiley (I love your icon image, btw. Makes me smile every time I see it.) Thanks for listening. And I'm glad you liked it. It needs some work, I think this one is worth pursuing. Oh, and I'd love to take credit for the guitar on here but I can't. These are loops on here that I put together and shifted around (and it's certainly true that I've got a lot to learn about production).

Thanks again, zallaz, for listening and for your kind Words. Heh. Couldn't help it. smiley bama smiley

Now that is wonderfully strange. I'm gonna listen to it again. With the headphones so I can really hear it. (darn crappy laptop speakers!)

COSMIC DUST by RAMZAR 3 years ago
Wow! All I could think of was Frank Zappa when I first heard this. Well, I thought of more than that. Like the fact that I love it, and I gotta listen to all your stuff. Soon. So much talent! I'm spacin' out and boppin' around at the same time.

Run Away by bama 3 years ago
I just replied to this while ago and thought I was replying to a comment on Best Thing. Totally irrelevant to this song. I need more caffiene.

Yep, I improvised it completely, lyrics and melody. And I don't have AutoTuner or I could've fixed a few wobbly notes in it, but I rather like the liveness of it, flaws and all.

When I sat down to put the lyrics on my site, I realized I didn't know 'em. I had to listen to the song over and over and stop it so I could write 'em down. Had no idea what they were. I've since listened and sung the thing enough to learn it. And I still like the first version best.

Thanks again, pharmakeus. I'm glad you like it. smiley
Best Thing by bama 3 years ago
Thanks, pharmakeus. Ooh, sounds like an alchemist's name. smiley I wish I hadn't lost the original vocal files in the hard drive crash. I'll have to start over to re-record it. But I think it should be done. By someone who knows what they're doin'! smiley

Thank you again, pharmakeus, for listening and for your lovely words. bama smiley

Thank you, Barretok. I've listened to some of the collabs you and Ravens have done. And I'm flattered (okay, amazed) that either of you took the time to listen to mine. To compliment my song too? Well, that's the icing on the cake. smiley

Thank you, B, thank you and Ravens very much. smiley
Beloved, new version 2008 by bama 3 years ago
Wow, coming from you, Ravens, I am pleased as punch! Your voice is marvelous. And your production--to die for. I feel like the most amateur of amateurs surrounded by some really wonderful artists on iComp. But I love music, always have.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm smiling big time here. smiley

Broken Chains by becwil 3 years ago
I'm only part way through listening to this, becwil. And I already have to tell you how much I love it. I'll say more after it's over. But all I can think of right now is letting the music take me away. So I'm gonna let it. Back later. bama smiley
[Shadows] Escape by Eidolonia 3 years ago
Epic concept is right! I've missed finding music like this. Good to know you're out there, creating such multi-textured symphonic works, Eido. Your instrumentation was wonderful. Is any of this made with samples or are you playing every bit of this? Wow, I'm listening to this piece as I type this. And now I am exploring your other music. And now I am downloading your album, Shadows. I am really enjoying this, Eido!

[Cover] Shroud Of False by Eidolonia 3 years ago
I'm not familiar with the original of this song, but I like the way you covered it. And I know what you mean about reverb. I used to use it a lot when I first started recording and mixing. Okay, until the other day, actually. It quickly turns to mush, especially depending upon by what means you are applying it. Not all reverbs were created equal! But IMO, you don't need it. I like the tone you get without it. A little harsh but that's the way you meant for it to be. And I like it. I don't have anything to say about the ending except...dang, Eido, I wanted to hear more!

A River In Between by RAVENS 3 years ago
When I listen to your songs, Ravens--no, that's wrong. I don't listen to your music. I experience it. And what an experience it is! I love what you do with production. The echoes, the sounds that are crisp here, silky smooth there. The drum track, the hovering chorusy synth, B's voice not growly but visceral, and your silky voice sliding over it all. That was wonderful. Okay, another favorite. And did I mention, wow!

Whatcha Say? by RAVENS 3 years ago
Wow! I don't know that I have anything particularly constructive to say, other than...WOW! I love this, the layers of subtle slinky percussion, your very very slinky voice (did I mention, WOW!), slinky and strong and sensual; and the wonderful keyboard and B's smooth soft words more spoken than sung, yet wonderfully lyrical...Have I used the word "wonderful" enough in this comment? And did I mention...WOW!

Words fail. I'm so glad I got to hear that. I'm downloading it and fav'ing it right now. I gotta send some folks to listen to that. Wow!

Howdy, Joanna! And thank you so much for listening to my spur of the moment improv song that just sorta happened. That's the way most of 'em are, but not all of 'em. Funny, the improv's generally work out better for me than the ones I sweat and slave over. Hm.

Thanks again, Joanna! I really appreciate it. smiley

Howdy, hiphopmoses! I'm so glad you checked out my song and yes, I do most of my songwriting exactly like that. Not always, but a whole whole lot. I start feeling it and hearing it and it all just pours out into the mike. Sometimes it even works! Heh. smiley

Best Thing by bama 3 years ago
Thanks, ShadowofNine smiley I appreciate your kind words. I had a lot of fun coming up with this song. Hey, you didn't mention my painstakingly and wonderfully wrought lyrics. I thought they were the best thing about the song (she said, unable to keep a straight face). Okay, I'll stop.

Thanks again. bama smiley
