| Hi everyone, sorry it's taken me so long to respond...busy singing this week with the orchestra here (chorus) and concert last night and today. So that's where my music effort has been. After this week (more concerts) I'll get back to recording and may even have a few more new songs brewing... Thank you for all the suggestions and feedback on my stuff. It's invaluable! |

| Wow. Thank you so much for all the detail and comments. I really do appreciate it. Especially the comments about my voice. I used to play out all the time when I was younger and then got away from it because I felt I was getting stale and also had a bad experience publicly where I forgot my own words (prob no one else would remember that, but I do) because I knew my own song so well, I started daydreaming in the middle of the song and then forgot where I was. I also had a couple musician friends basically tell me that all my songs were the same, and maybe I should branch out---that was hard to hear, but prob valid. I sing what I sing though, and have come to accept it, mostly. Anyway. I have a couple friends who want me to play publicly again so this is helping me with that too. We shall see... I play a black 6 string Sigma (Martin makes Sigma) thin body cutaway guitar. I also have a Takemine 12 string but that desperately needs to be re-strung and tuning is a pain, also have another 6 string, Yamaha, and that actually has a really nice full sound, but I rarely play it. I guess I wasn't clear about the tracks. I only recorded a second vocal track on this, not separate guitar. I want to try that, but honestly, I'll have to write out every single chord in order to do it, and just haven't had the time. I do think it would help, so I will get there. I've just been using Audacity to record, and really didn't do much post-production on this because I feel like I make everything sound way over-processed. I did turn down the background vocals a little bit but that's all. My voice does reach all the way up to the top of the line visually in many places, when recording... I'm standing about a foot from the mic when recording. Seems like a long way away, but maybe just a little further. I even turned my head when I was going to sing louder, but you can't even tell. The mic is unbelievable. I think I'll try it without headphones to get further away. Thanks again for all your suggestions and help! |

| i don't know what compression is! i'm not doing it on purpose...what does this have to do with background noise? it's almost impossible to record without some other noise going on in my environment...some of it was me, creaking floor and fingernail on the guitar body, etc. I have a pop filter, but haven't used it yet. Would that help? |

Mir and Rusticalia--thank you so much for the suggestions. That's what I was looking for I will re-do and post again. I know it's prob just trial and error too, but your suggestions and advice are much appreciated. I also bought a pop screen which I haven't used yet, but maybe that will also help.Vixen--thanks for your comment. The turning point has more to do with my personal life than the equipment, but maybe, in some way, they are tied to one another ![]() |

| Thanks C Man. A friend actually recommended that I buy a Yeti mic and when my laptop died over the weekend, in addition to buying a new computer, I went all out and got the Yeti too. So we'll see how that works with my voice. I'm excited to have a decent microphone to work with. I've never had that before. I am feeling better. Grieving for things you never had sometimes is worse than losing something you did have. All the lost hopes and dreams seems worse sometimes. ... Anyway. Thank you. |

| http://freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/scorpio.html And then I looked at my scope for this week. This part made me laugh, considering the comments above... "Despite the wealth and renown he has accumulated during his influential career, musician Brian Eno is a big fan of raw simplicity. Speaking about R&B, soul music, and psychedelia, he said, "These earlier eras of pop music were characterized not by the search for perfection but by bizarre enthusiasms, small budgets, erratic technique, crummy equipment, and wild abandon." Would you consider playing with that approach in the coming weeks, Scorpio? It's not necessarily something you should do all the time, but right now I suspect it's a formula for the most interesting kind of success. |

| While I appreciate your comments and feedback, I think it's taking things a little too personally to say that I am disrespecting the listener. I write my songs for myself--if others like them or have constructive feedback, I appreciate that, but I'm first and foremost writing because I have to express myself in that way. This song was written in the past week, after a man who I fell in love with, broke my heart by disappearing without any warning... So the song is personal, and I recorded it, so I would have a record of it. I don't agree that I have to please the listener, I have to please myself first. I used to write songs all the time, about 10 years ago, but I stopped, so I didn't invest in production equipment. I have been considering it lately, just because of this song and a couple others. I stopped playing guitar and singing for awhile, but am back into it now, after I spent the summer at a music institute. I remember something someone said one day there, that performing the music is everything. It's in the performance that the music lies. It's not in the polishing and recording. The first commenter here recognized something different about this recording and that was, my heart was breaking as I was singing it. I want this recording to stand the way it is. Because I was singing it for him, even if he never hears it or cares. Okay. I'm done. | |

| Had A Dream2 by brendajean | 1 year ago |
| Thank you so much all of you for the lovely and detailed comments. I forgot to mention that I recorded this on my iPhone. I should really look into getting my own real recording equipment. I guess I gave up on that idea because I'd really stopped writing songs about 10 years ago. Some things have happened in the last 7 months that somehow, I could only express again through song. Poems and stories and blogging just wasn't cutting it. So maybe it's time for some real recording stuff. We shall see... |

| i'm not sure what my desired effect is, i guess that's why i'm playing. i suppose it depends exactly on the piece i am creating for video, the text, etc. thank you for your feedback and kindness | |
| The Water is Wide by brendajean | 1 year ago |
Thank you LH--I've been creating some very basic poem/story videos and I like to layer and manipulate the soundtrack to them, using my own music/voice. This is just one of the products of playing with Audacity. I'm not so interested in recording my voice for pure vocal quality, but in manipulating it to get a desired effect or mood The feedback is good Thanks everyone! |
|
| The Water is Wide by brendajean | 1 year ago |
Thanks for the feedback. I'm basically recording myself singing in order to experiment with the effects in audacity, because I haven't really done that. I'm not worried about my voice at all |

| Thanks for doing this Mannix. I really appreciate everything you do with my poetry/spoken word. This poem was written after a close friend of mine's father died of Alzheimer's. He was a doctor and one of the sweetest people I've ever known. Very kind man. Shortly after he died, I saw a painting at the National Gallery of Art in DC, called "The Beach at Villerville" and the man in the painting resembled his dad. I used to see him everywhere. You know, someone who reminded me of him...so that's where this came from. Thanks! | |

It's sad in that sometimes the pains we endure make it sometimes hard for us to let happiness in later on...or to accept the possibility. Thank you for all your kind comments. I really appreciate it. We were only rehearsing for holiday pops music in December, but currently we are rehearsing for recordings of some Randol Alan Bass music ("Concordia", "Gloria", "Passage Into Spirit"--commissioned by us), followed by Verdi's "Requiem" (to be performed as part of the "Defiant Requiem"--Google if not familiar with this one) and then John Adams "Harmonium." So we are pretty busy this season (Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus- http://bpchorus.org/home.asp ). Actually, we toured in Germany (Berlin) last July, but I was away for that so did not get to participate Thanks again! |

I really love the background music here that you've created. It feels right, like you said, but I can't say exactly why. I really really appreciate you taking my poems and doing this with them--it's funny but most of the poems you've picked, are about the same person, or inspired by that person. I'm glad you have appreciated them because the person they were written for has never really said if he did. Ah well. This makes me happy to hear them like this Thank you! |

Thanks MB. I am not that good of a musician (guitar-wise--clarinet is a different story) really to play with others, so that's true what you said about 'doing my own thing.'
