Collaboration with composer Paul Ramsay is up and available for listening!

Paul and I have a new PMusic Single out as of today - it's called A Walk Away From You: Keeping Quiet. It's a wonderful collaboration for both of us since we each bring something to the mix which the other person can't do on his/her own. As Paul wrote:

Notes on
A Walk Away From You
PMusic EP007

This Single is a collaboration with artist/composer Carla J. Patterson (aka Carla Cryptic). After Carla submitted some Sons to Consemble E, we struck up a creative friendship and I invited her to 'build' a Single with me. Carla has a very striking voice and I knew working with her would enable me to begin to explore the possibilities of PMusic song forms, something which I now plan to develop further.

Our initial 'seed' was a recording I made of a gamut of piano notes, being clustered randomly. Carla improvised some vocal lines to this and I integrated these into the beginnings of our Single. We worked back and forth in this way, each adding sounds to the potential pool while I also began to sculpt the 'Nets' (or algorithms) for the various sections of this piece. Carla contributed some brass/keyboard sounds at one point, giving me the idea of a section suggesting an urban environment. To these I added some more, including footsteps, so the idea of a meditative walk began to form in my mind, suggesting the broad narrative of the piece was about contemplating a relationship. On some playings this relationship seems to be sad and rather doomed, in others the possibilities are more open-ended.

Working with Carla has been a real pleasure and enabled me to add another Single to the collection, taking a direction that I would not have been able to achieve alone. I look forward to future work with Ms Cryptic smiley

We collaborated on the artwork as well as the music. I really like the results in both areas. smiley

Paul and I met through mail art, which some of you know is another passion of mine. There are lots of mail artists who also do music and he was one of the ones I really admired because of his dedication to experimental music and using computer programming to create constantly changing musical experiences from the same set of music fragments, which he calls 'sons'. You can read more about this and hear some of his other music by following this link:

The first consemble piece I added to was Soul Electric:

You, too, can become a part of a consemble! Check out the latest open project here:

It appears I don't have the plug-in that the new single's website needs. Why not post to iComps?

Becs - oh shoot! Yeah, you need Adobe's Shockwave player to listen. I can't upload the full song here at iComp because it changes every time you listen - that's one of the great things about it. But, I will try to upload a single incarnation of the song here once I record one of the instances properly. Here's a link to the free Shockwave Player for those who are interested and willing to download it:

It has been so long since I first started listening to these PMusic singles of Paul's that I forgot I had to get Shockwave to enable playing them. Thanks for mentioning it!

I'm listening at it this very moment Carla and Paul. You both sound extraordinary. Carla you have one of my favorites voices in the world. It can go so many ways but the soulfulness never leaves it. You even bring soul to classical music which to me is a tremendous feat and Paul your piano playing on this cut is simply marvelous. Congratulations to you both.
