Is That All There Is? (for my Mom) by carlajpatterson 21 days ago
Thanks Cp smiley I was into this song when I was a kid, too, but I was lucky and didn't experience death in my immediate surroundings till I was in high school and, even
then, it wasn't close family. 10 is early! Hugs all the way back to then from me now.
Your comments always mean the world to me, by the way. I seem to listen to this song
at least once a day and it makes me feel connected to my Mom. That's the coolest thing
about music - it takes you right back to a moment in time as if nothing is in the way.
We are lucky, we humans. smiley

Thanks so much! And now I know what you went through, at least in general. There's nothing like losing your Mom and I get it now instead of just imagining it.
The Letter by ClayPotts 22 days ago
How cool this is! I love it... when I saw the title, I was hoping it was this song and the fact that it's this style is even better. U be kul, me ol' China! (Ask me or Laps what that means if you don't already. smiley - You kind of remind me of Lenny Kravitz on this, I'm just realizing! lol)
You can be anyone, can't ya? But, that doesn't change the fact that I love your Peter voice the best. smiley

Is That All There Is? (for my Mom) by carlajpatterson 24 days ago
Wow, it was awesome today! People from all eras of my Mom's life were there and it was a great party, one which she would have enjoyed. We put up artwork of hers from different eras and many of the attendees brought things of hers that she'd given them or sold them and we got to see art we hadn't seen in decades in some cases. I played this song and after the first verse, lots of people started singing along with the chorus. It was an amazing experience with an energy and emotional tenor which was very positive and healing. There were a few tears shed but mostly we just had a good time talking about Mom. smiley

Thanks for your kind words, folks! I really appreciate them all.

Worse Things I Could Do by MakenaMonk 1 month ago
There are worse things I could do than listen to this again this morning as I'm supposed to be getting ready for the dentist! lol You are the bomb, as usual - your voice! Your interpretations! Your sense of where and how to place it in a mix. Just brilliant, my love.
Desperado by Vixen 1 month ago
It's always so good to hear your voice in my ear and it's nicely forward in the mix here. I know what you mean about posting things when you owe others collabs but I've become quite philosophical about that over the years... it's helped me understand it when others
aren't able to send me stuff they owe me. So much can come between us and our obligations when it comes to artistic endeavors. It's not like promising to get chores done, lol. Creating music is as quixotic a pursuit as making a good painting or writing a novel. Just got to let it happen when it can.

lol I still haven't heard the original Cure version! smiley I wanted to wait until I hear all of the Makena-based remixes. I'm working my way through them day by day and leaving comments as I do. I really like the way you've done this Andre! Love the slowing down between the lines. Why didn't I think of that!? lololol I love the way you fleshed out the the 'however unsure' parts and the way you added his voice in harmony over the chorus. Really cool.

Ooooh, I also love tenor recorder and have several (including an alto and a picolino also!). We will have to do recorder music together someday. smiley Now I will listen...

Wow! Of course I love it but it's totally unexpected nonetheless, a cool direction you took.

I've been working on my a capella version and it's very different of course. I'm glad I didn't hear this before I finished or I'd have been mesmerized into changing what I was doing. smiley

Oh, I love this section where the bass and recorder play alone together and then Mak's voice comes in over the bass. WOW! So cool.

Love you two separately and together, always. xox

Thanks, Gérald... sorry about your Granddad too. It was so hard to have laryngitis last week because I couldn't sing for her so this was a big relief. Singing is how I process everything, especially the big things. She is no longer sick or feeling pain, she is free. And, as you say, she will always be with me and those who knew her in our memories. xox

Motherless Child by carlajpatterson 2 months ago
Thanks Chris - I'm glad to see your post. Love you, too.

BTW, the piece behind my Mom is actually a painting - or, rather, 25 small (4 x 4 inch) paintings. smiley One of the coolest things about my Mom is that she never gave up on things she wanted to do. She'd been painting for most of her life but two things happened as she got older - one was that she had severe rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and it became harder and harder for her to work on large canvasses and one was that a lot of her art supplies were lost in a fire which she just barely got out of herself (that's a story in and of itself of course!). So, she got a grant from a foundation in New York and bought these small canvasses so that they'd be a size she could handle and then had my brother Frank help her make a frame for them so that they'd look like one large canvas. My Mom was tiny but she only liked making big things. (Re: the fire - she lived with her landlord in an apartment they'd created where a garage would have been. It was nice. But she was already in a wheelchair and when a fire broke out in the upstairs part of the house, she couldn't get out. But, some drug dealers (!) up the street came and got her out - they had been students of hers at the Arts Magnet school she'd taught at when they were kids so they looked for her outside the house and, when they didn't see her, they pushed they way into the downstairs part of the house and carried her out.)

Is Our Blood RED Is Our Blood by MakenaMonk 6 months ago
Masterful arrangement... love each part for its own style - I like the way you're singing the various parts, the dynamics, and the harmonies, the flat - almost spoken - quality of the line 'Red is our blood'. Nice when the claps come in too.

It's an interesting combination of musical styles also - in the end, just 100% yours, though. Love the part at the end without any accompaniment till the tiny bit of piano and bongos. Really cool.
