Jollof Rice (Icomp Cous Cous) by Gitano 2 years ago
Middle Eastern? Jollof Rice is a West African dish, as are most of the instruments used in this tune. [Kalimba, African marimba and various African percussion instruments.] The other sounds were made using soft synths, the Albino 3, I think and Greenoak's Crystal, most likely. I can't remember because it's quite an old tune. But I think, essentially, that Jollof Rice, though made here in the U.K., has an African, and not Middle Eastern sound!

Man - your vocal work gets better with each track. Spires, this is just lovely. Guitar, synth choices and your vocal in this are perfect. The minimal beat holds it all together superbly well. Excellent track brother Vortex!

This is superb. Heavy, heavy stuff and really well put together.

Got to agree with your comments about the Slave Trade - but you forgot to include Liverpool, [where I'm from] which took over from Bristol and became the biggest slaving port in the country. The city, until very recently, chose to conveniently forget the legacy [including a long established Black population] that the trade has left. I'm glad it is now slowly, after much pressure, putting the record straight.

Hell of a good song - thanks!

Jade by davajonah 5 years ago
Thanks Iti! New version is more 'phone friendly - lowered one of the pad voices - which was rather too obtrusive. Also added some arp layers - the number of octaves increase as the tune plays.

Anyway - thanks for your comments etc - nice one.

This is fantastic - best in your jamroom imo. Maybe the start is a bit abrupt, but truly a wonderful soundscape. Reminds me in parts of some Sufi trance I've heard and certainly wouldn't be out of place on Eno/Byrne's My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

Wonderful music and definately one for the pod. Thanks!

Pipe Noises by davajonah 5 years ago
LOL! Pipes around the world! This has a Japanese reed flute [nearest sound to a fife I could find] Irish penny whistle, Shetland bagpipes, Irish bodhran, Scottish snare drum and my own humble synths. Yes - a right mix. Not one for purists, but I was only messing about.

I'm a big fan of Celtic [especially Irish] music. I love its dynamism and the way musicians are always looking to incorporate new sounds into traditional tunes. Check out an Irish band called Kila if you are interested. They have their own site with some free downloads. Good stuff.

Thanks very much for listening and commenting. smiley

I'm working my way through your compositions - this is the best so far imo! I love it! A new playlist for my pod is at the moment being created. Nice one, thank you and good stuff. I'd like to hear a longer version of this - develop some of those really dark themes behind the bleeps.
This song needs a name.... and a little tlc. by grandtheory 5 years ago
Dark, industrial, with a great "Astronomy Domini" Floyd vibe running through it. Heavy stuff and very good.
Tinderbox by davajonah 5 years ago
Hey guys - thanks for the listens and comments. Really appreciated. I was only messing about when I did this one - trying very hard to get to grips with Logic and mixing and I wanted to make something very loud and heavy while still trying to hear all the different sounds. I find it difficult 'cus I don't know what I'm doing really. Maybe I should go on a course or buy a manual - it must be quicker and easier than fiddling with all the buttons and sliders and not remembering what I've just done!

Thanks again - made up!

Allah L'a Ke by davajonah 6 years ago
Thanks for the listen and comment David, appreciate that!

The kora is a very expressive instrument, a beautiful one and I wouldn't presume to be able to emulate its sound with my rudimentary skills! I just wanted to do something with the sound really, in my own amateur way. I love that little melody and I had a lot of fun playing with the midi and experimenting with different synths while making the tune. Yes, you are correct, I'm sure that a person with more skill than me could do a much better job, but I'm happy with what I've achieved!

I've been to West Africa btw, and have been lucky enough to see the kora played live by griot masters. It really is something else!

Thanks again.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment guys - really appreciated.

I have to say - I'm not particularly religious myself, but yes, you are right Rick. The carol lends itself to the ethereal and the mystery/majesty of such an incredible story [or truth, depending on your belief] - it is such a simple, yet at the same time, powerful melody.

Have a good holiday!
