| I used LA Scoring Strings 2 and Pro Tools. The pulsing synth was from Hybrid which is a synth plug in that comes with the Pro Tools instrument set. | |
| Gestures #1 (for duo piano) by soulima | 11 days ago |
| I like it. Has a jazz vibe to it. Nice chords- those 2nds in those dense comping chords nicely contrast the higher register part in the second piano. | |
| Rhapsody (for solo piano) by soulima | 18 days ago |
| Great piece John. It to me has a somewhat Satie like feel to it. Love those harmonic extensions. The development on that theme is terrific. You really get a beautiful sound out of Notion too. |

| Tekno Orchestra by dcoscina | 26 days ago |
| Thanks for the comments gents. I've posted this on various places but it doesn't seem to generate a lot of interest. I guess I went too outside the box or else it just isn't all that great... |

| Rise of the Apes! Short demo using Project SAM Orchestral Essentials only by dcoscina | 4 months ago |
| Yes, I did get the reference. And I also agree that Goldsmith was totally channeling Varese's Octandre and things of that nature. I miss film scores that breath, that have space and aren't wall-to-wall mass of sound....sigh. |

| You did this all in Notion2?? Great sound and a terrific kinetic energy. Reminds me in spirit of John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine. | |
| Jerry's Action! by dcoscina | 7 months ago |
| I don't think Stravinsky was alive when Goldsmith was actively writing his seminal pieces (late '60s and '70s). And his style comes from Stravinsky's earlier compositional period rather than his Neo Classical so I'm not sure how much Stravinsky was influenced by Goldsmith. Or perhaps I misunderstood what you meant John. I know film composers borrow anything that isn't nailed down partially due to temp tracks that editors throw onto the picture before original music is applied. Sometimes directors fall in love with the pre-existing pieces and demand the composer emulate the same sound. Edit- okay Stravinsky died in 1971 but I'd be curious to know whether he was even cognizant of Goldsmith or any other film composer during that time period. |

| Jerry's Action! by dcoscina | 7 months ago |
| I think I'll change that last section to pizz strings supporting the winds. As it is, the brass and strings over power them... |
|
| Engage! Star Ship Battle revised by dcoscina | 7 months ago |
| In actuality, that whole action section was written in it. I just figured I'd do a low string cluster at the end to sum it all up. He he he. As always, thanks John for you comments and support. I'll keep working this one out. I feel I can expand it to a symphonic poem or something to that effect. |

| Samba For Jerry & Barry by dcoscina | 7 months ago |
| Thanks John! I think that often improvising lines leads to these types of melodic shapes though I'm getting better and just hearing them in my head and plunking them in step by step. I've been working on a few compositions in Sibelius and promised to send you a few to give you an idea of that library. It's not perfect but it can do somethings very well. | |
| Requiem for Japan updated including Hollywood Strings by dcoscina | 9 months ago |
| I hear you! Sibelius 7 touts a 38gb built in library but it doesn't sound as good as N3's library especially the new section brass! But I hate the fact that N3 ignores hairpins as far as increasing and decreasing volume on sustained notes- Sibelius does do this and a lot more. | |
| Privyet! (for Albion Orchestra) by dcoscina | 9 months ago |
| Thanks John. You know I've really become quite fond of Igor's music. I particularly like his Asian influenced piece...the name escapes me though. | |
| Requiem for Japan (featuring Spitfire Albion) by dcoscina | 9 months ago |
| Thanks John. I wouldn't buy Spitfire's main libraries as they are too expensive and I don't need them. This is just a section of a larger piece composed in Sibelius 6 (er, I know, I abandoned Notion sort of because it just doesn't give me enough layout parameters for printing out). |

| Requiem for Japan (featuring Spitfire Albion) by dcoscina | 9 months ago |
| [quote="music_man"]very convincing sounds.....beautiful string and woodwind movements. awesome composition, extremely emotional and interesting. MM Thanks! It's just a part of a larger work. I just got Albion a little while ago and wanted to see how it could match up to a piece like this. |

| Great fun John! Not only a great piece but the sound is very clean and sonically superb. This really made my morning. | |
| Dial G for Goldsmith by dcoscina | 1 year ago |
| Thanks John. I'm actually co-composing a film score at the moment. I'm channeling a lot of Bernard Herrmann with a touch of Williams. Mind you, I like their sense of harmony. Very thick chordal motion. I'll post some of it on here- whatever doesn't make it into the film that is. |

| Suite for Chamber Orchestra-Mov't 1 by soulima | 1 year ago |
| I love this! Very pastoral. How did you get such a nice stereo spread with the solo strings? Are you still using Notion2 or did you move up to Notion3? Sounds sonically really full and dynamic | |
| At The Gate by soulima | 1 year ago |
| I love the English horn solo. Terrific modulation right after the bass clarinet section. Your music exudes your passion for composing and as such is a delight to listen to. | |
| Aphorism by soulima | 1 year ago |
| This is terrific! Reminds me a bit of the work of Varese with the clash of instruments to create dissonance as a texturally compelling compositional tool. | |
| Theme and Variation # 1 from the 'August Variations' by soulima | 1 year ago |
| Really lovely piece. I love the use of the ornaments. It gives the piece that extra dimension of harmonic interest. Great sound quality too. I dare say you have gotten the best results out of Notion I have ever heard. Kudos! |

| Pavane for a Vampire Child (rev Sept 5) by dcoscina | 1 year ago |
| Thanks for the kind words John. This took a bit of time to realize with the VSL instruments more than anything else. If I had done it in Notion it would have taken half the time. The part with the horn is very Goldsmithian even though I didn't notice it at the time. That could be the Stravinsky similarity. I also love the sound of the bassoon in it's upper register. |
|
| Pavane for a Vampire (Let Me In) by dcoscina | 1 year ago |
| Thanks John. I was definitely going for that Mahlerian like pathos but on a smaller scale (Kindertotenleider). I'm still continuing to add to this piece as I want to work in this idiom some more. It's more overtly melodic and less rhythmic than some of my other offerings. | |
| Wonderment- featuring Hollywood Strings by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Not all libraries. Just most of them. ;p |

| Music for Brass, Percussion and Celesta by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| I don't know if anyone noticed that Herrmann homage I inserted with those alternating 7th chords mid way through. Then I move to a Howard Hanson type section towards the end. This is actually a mock up for a film I'm working on. Not that it will be used as a cue but it was just me getting some ideas out | |
| Serenade for Chamber Orchestra - Mov't One by soulima | 2 years ago |
| Wonderful John. I'm still knocked out by how you use the Notion sounds. Very impressive! |

| Nice piece John. Sort of a Satie inspired for the 21st century. I like the chord progressions. | |
| Asian Dawn- featuring LASS, Goliath and Project SAM Orchestral Brass Classic by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Nope I just use ArtsAcoustic Reverb. Nice warm hall sounds. Sometimes I use the IRs that came with LASS in Logic Space Designer Convo 'verb. | |
| Asian Dawn- featuring LASS, Goliath and Project SAM Orchestral Brass Classic by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Thanks. I also added a little motivic immitation in the piece. | |
| Planet of the Strings- for LA Scoring Strings, VSL Horn, Harp and Flute by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Actually it takes a bit more work because of the scripts. I think the 1.1 version should help in this manner. | |
| Perpetuum Mobile I by soulima | 2 years ago |
| John, terrific stuff. Just wondering if you are influenced by American minimalism. That repeating pizz. figure with the developing material above it is stunning. Love it! |
|
| Into the Wild West (featuring LA Scoring Strings & Symphobia by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Thanks John. I have posted it on various forums and it has not seemed to generate that much interest. Then again, I fear that most of the other places I post on is inhabited by folks that are film score/video game inspired and don't like or know much about classical music. I know this needs some work and I have half a mind to just compose the rest in NOTION as I don't have to worry about performance controls and reverbs and all that. | |
| Siberian Express by soulima | 2 years ago |
| Great job! What sounds did you use? This cannot be NOTION- stereo samples! If it is, please tell me your secret because this sounds fantastic!! I love it- especially the solo violin. You should send this to the KW Symphony- they are always looking for submissions from Ontario composers. |

| Planet of the Strings- for LA Scoring Strings, VSL Horn, Harp and Flute by dcoscina | 2 years ago |
| Thanks soulima. I have been busy beta testing our favorite NOTatION program in its 3rd iteration. It's awesome. |
|
| Wisdom Tooth Fairy by dcoscina | 3 years ago |
| I chalk that up to being on codeine high. I think my idea is that the Wisdom Tooth Fairy is more universal and as such is not tied down to conventional Western music idioms. that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. | |
| Zoomorphisms - The Caterpillar by soulima | 3 years ago |
| John, terrific compositional chops on ALL of your pieces. I'm thoroughly impressed by everything I have heard. Is all this on NOTION? I think you make it sound terrific! |
|
| The Bourne Secrecy by dcoscina | 3 years ago |
| Yeah, both Pro Tools and Symphobia rock. Very easy to make music using these tools. In fact, making music is fun again! |
|
| Sonata for Flute, Oboe and Three Pianos Mov't Three by soulima | 3 years ago |
| Hey soulima, nice job on this. Are you still using NOTION? Sounds very dynamic. I can totally hear this played by real instrumentalists. Have you had this performed by a live group? All the best. |

![]() Vamp, I love this arrangement you did! Nice sounds too. What low string articulation did you use for the violin/viola? It sounds really nice! |
|
| De-Limited by Wes_McClintock | 3 years ago |
![]() Very much inspired by Phil Glassian minimalism. I like the way it develops. Nice use of the lower string choir. The building of low string sonorities is also reminiscent of Polish composers like Wojciech Kilar. Nice job! |

| Japanese Medititation by dcoscina | 5 years ago |
| Believe it or not, you will find bari or tenor saxes in many Japanese composers' instrumentation. The Seven Samurai theme by Fumio Hayasaka has a great bari line for the buffoonish Toshiro Mifune character. Many of Akira Ifukube's Godzilla scores had some reed instruments like saxes incorporated throughout the score. Saxes are under-used instruments in my mind and I'm trying to show that they aren't always reconciled to the jazz idiom. |
