The Yards - Sweet Potato Soup [Live at Fatso's] by elmaestro 11 months ago
Thanks Soundhound. Yes, we were aware of the distortion problem with the organ. Bradford used a Motion Sound amplifier that has built-in microphones and apparently one of them (the right channel) was on the fritz and was crunchy all night. It wasn't apparent on stage and since our recording tech was also our FOH tech, he didn't have enough monitoring isolation to catch the problem while we were soundchecking or during the performance. It seems this wasn't enough to deter Hammondbeat Records from wanting to release it as is although this sort of thing is very important to me. Thanks again for your keen ears and for all the kind words!

AceNoface,
I just scanned the lead sheet.

Here's the link - http://idisk.mac.com/elmaestro/Public/corner2.pdf (412K PDF)

There's a repeat missing in there. The form is ABA but the manuscript says AB. We changed it later.

Thanks a lot, guys!
Appreciate the comments on our sound.

To answer your question, jayman,
I joined the band a few months prior to the recording. Some of the guys knew eachother from college and most of them had also been playing together for about two years with another group so I was definitely the newcomer here!

To hear the other band that we all play in, check out my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/bradmaestasgroup

Thanks again!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

To answer your question, electrosketch:
Somehow I ended up playing with piano-less groups right after I started playing bass. One of my first professional gigs was as a duo with a vocalist. After a while, I got used to not having a chordal instrument around and I could fill or open that space as I felt necessary. I always have the choice of just playing the roots and staying simple and sparse or I can fill out the chords and imply as much harmony as I want, too. That's definitely the case with this group. Nick fosters experimentation.

I suppose I felt a kind of pressure when I was just starting out and had solos or gigs where I was essentially naked and all by myself but now I try not to think about it too much. I find the idea of implication fascinating. In that I mean that it''s sometimes more fun to only hint at the harmony and let everyone (including the audience) use their imagination to complete the chords rather than trying to play every note of the chords for completeness' sake. So even when I'm in a group like this with a guitarist who may or may not fill out the chords, I still have room to move around and fill out some chords from time to time if it feels appropriate. Some folks want their tunes filled out, some want it sparse. Mastering both approaches lets you free up your mind so you can have fun!
Thanks again!

For bassists and gearheads, I used the following:

2002 Fodera 6-string Edward model
Neck-through 34" scale, 24 small frets
Ebony fingerboard and headstock veneer
3-piece Maple neck
Solid 2-inch Mahogany body wings
Extended B-string headstock
Bartolini dual-coil soapbar pickups in single-coil mode
Mike Pope 18-volt, 3-band preamp
Piano black finish, black hardware
Fodera #28120 nickel strings

Signal chain:
For this session, we used two channels for the bass. One straight DI feed (Countryman) and one E/V RE-20 dynamic mic on the cabinet (off-axis). We ended up using a lot of the mic sound.

Instrument Cable - Analysis Plus Pro Oval Studio
Amplifier - Walter Woods Ultra High Power head
Speaker Cable - ProCo FatMax 8-guage
Speaker Cabinet - Epifani UL-112

I'm glad you found this, too! You may have noticed that I mistakenly had your name up there in the credits instead of your brother's there for a while. I'm sure you didn't mind! You are totally right about the Iain Ballamy into. It sounds almost exactly the same! Great to hear from you!

Thanks. I agree about the intro. Remember that this is a rough mix. What you hear here is only what was completed on the first day of recording. If you go to The Yards' page, you can hear the final mix. After overdubs and mixing, the intro length is much more tolerable. : )

DOJO - Bad Song (Rough) by elmaestro 4 years ago
Scotty, yes this is Brian Baggett the guitarist, not the Stick player. Brian formed Dojo after the Brian Baggett Band was created, so technically we're not the BBB.

Everybody, thanks for all your kind words!
