I have to figure out an ending. Next year, will try to do at LEAST 3-4 pieces! Here's something cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehYoIKTsiV0&feature=player_embedded#! |

| David, I'm glad someone really appreciates this. Made my day. Next one, I'm going to play around in a Pygmy vein. Do you like Pygmy music? It's some of the most profound I've heard. So, going to play with some phasing concepts and Pygmy-inspired scales. But, I never know what's going to happen. Start with some sounds and let it do its thing. Thanks again for comments. |

Nice feedback. That's what I was hoping for. Thanks. The gamelan samples are free and can be found here. It's a 200 year-old instrument: http://www.marsudiraras.org/gamelan/ However, it's a lot of work to make them sound good. Out of the box, they are not recorded too well. This song uses a wacky original tuning I created. Actually, the tuning kind of changes as the song goes on. Hahah. So, not traditional, but not even tempered. I tried very hard to include a baritone sax and muted trumped. But, the thing got muddy so I reverted to this simpler approach that showcases the beauty of the old gamelan instrument. This is what it looks like: http://www.marsudiraras.org/gamelan.html Bass is Chris Hein bass, which is the best virtual bass instrument I've found so far. Drums are Addictive Drums, brushes. And, some other crap from here and there. Yeah, will try to increase my output in 2011. 2010 had nasty money struggles and not much time for music. 2011 should be much better. Thanks again. |

It's much smaller than its authentic cousin, thus facilitating easy transport to gigs. AcetyleneJukebox: Please listen to last 2 seconds of the song and a great secret will be revealed! Pharma: nice to see you again. Hope life is good. I'm pleased with this piece. Next one is 80% done. Won't be such a long hiatus. |

| Hello gentlemen. Thanks for comments. I worked so hard on this one. The mixing was a nightmare, because I made some mistakes early on. This was my first attempt with Logic Pro. I actually BOUGHT a copy. Yes, Pharma .... I started with ethnic samples of a real qin, and a doshpuluur. That's a kind of Mongolian banjo. I stretched out the notes to add that WASH of sound in the beginning. I added percussion to brighten it up and give it pleng. And, the pads last, to fill out areas ... and create some kind of ending! Thanks again. Sawadee krup. |

| Not a good choice. Go to Iceland. They are off the petrol grid, and they have abundant water. Highest standard of living in the world. Democratic Republic. The majority of the country's electricity (80%) is generated using hydropower; the rest is geothermal power. But, there is the little problem of rising sea levels, which will cover them and Manhattan. And active volcanoes. |

| I've started on Honey Ant Dreaming. An ambient-ish piece. Very nice chords. It's going to be hard. I've put it off because I don't want to screw it up. I have a really nice beginning. I'd be pissed if the rest of the song falters. One must remain ego-less! Will play with it this weekend. It's very pretty, and strange, and ethnic. I've been listening to Sublime Frequencies CDs. I'm officially out of my Gamelan phase, and into my Algerian phase. And Thailand. Say hello to Bruce Willis. I am sorry about his accident. |

| I spent 2 months on a piece with just synths and it turned out like crap. Fortunately, I got a G5 and Logic 8 recently, and a mountain of new software and samples ... including new microtonal-tuning software. Here it is: http://www.nonoctave.com/ Terrible website. Great software. Should be here later this week. And, I'm busy slicing, mapping, and tuning Gamelan samples for NI Battery. I suppose I'll do something with drums and gamelan. I have no idea. I also have some Tuva mandolin-ish samples that are very nice (Discovery Firm). I could build something on it similar to this piece, Oskal. I wait for something really eerie to occur. Then, I don't have doubts about developing it further. Working like a dog. I'll get back into composing in a couple weeks. So, nothing soon I'm afraid. I have a lot of studying to do on Logic 8. Their "Sculpture" synth is very, very promising. Quite organic, yet acoustically impossible. Thanks for your comments. Yours in the Tao. |

| Hey Seles. This tune is getting an insane number of hits this week. Wonder why. What on earth is 5° Napoletana? Sound like a Sativa strain. Is that it? Is it one of the purps? I work intuitively: no barlines, keyboard, loops, or BPM. It's all moving blobs around and stretching them. Pencil and matrix editor. And audio blobs (stretch, chop, transpose). Like finger painting. Thanks for your encouragement! |

| These are the Gamelan samples I used for this piece. I had to heavily EQ them. You'll need to convert them from OGG to wav, aiff, or whatever sound format your sampler uses. Now, none of these are tuned to a Western chromatic scale, wherin lies their appeal. You cannot possibly make a radio hit with these samples: http://www.marsudiraras.org/gamelan/ And, if you're in the mood for some late-night, steamy court Gamelan music, here's some free mp3s for you and your lover: http://www.marsudiraras.org/audio.html You can gambang all night long, or as long as your Ipod permits. The horn sound is a Chinese souna (Google it). I warped the crap out of it. All the horn sounds, including the mellow conch shell-ish or French horn sounds are from the same original file (a Chinese traditional souna recording) with the formants massacred, time stretched, chopped up, etc. Nice effects, eh? The big hand drum is, of course, the daf. Strings are a good old koto. Chopped to bits. The drums kind of provide the melodic accompanyment, which is one of my tricks. http://www.donbak.co.uk/images/KhalifeKarimSafvati.jpg Keep up your excellent feedback! ![]() |
