Glad you like it James! I actually didn't record anything. I used EastWest/QuantumLeap sample libraries. Specifically their Symphonic Orchestra Gold, and Symphonic Choirs. Recording live instruments is something I hope to do soon though!

Lively is the word. And lovely. I like how you bring that little motif back throughout, giving this some nice unity with the variation. Enjoyed the listen!
Pipe Dream by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks everyone! Glad you enjoyed this. I'm not sure if I'll be going back to this douglas, especially since I worked on it on my school's computers. But who knows, I might tweak it a bit. You're welcome to add your electronica twist!

And thanks becwil. I will definitely be incorporating more original sounds in my future work. I've started sampling, and now I can't stop!
The Final Charge by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Wow, thanks everyone! Glad to see this has gotten such a great response!

Thanks so much soulima, I will definitely use your advice in my future 'remastered' version. And yep, Silky, it will be longer!
March (of the Pumpkins) by soulima 1 year ago
Great textures in this. Those pumpkins sure are resourceful. Car horn, Lead Pipe, Champagne Bottles, Duck Call, Whip, Applause.... Lion's Roar? Love it.
Boats Against the Current by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks becwil! It's cool to hear you say that. I was reading a script to a film I've committed to scoring, and I had this music playing. It was working really well, as it was a hopeful, journey type scene. I guess the staccato repetition in the violas kind of represent the movement and journey, and that middle interlude kind of accentuates the hope in my mind.

And thanks Silky for your feedback. I knew there was a couple points where the harmonies seemed a little off, but I kind of liked the sound of it. I don't know if it would be off putting if I listened to it for the first time, since I'm kind of immune to the sounds. Glad you liked the title, and that it worked for you! It's from the final line of The Great Gatsby; my favorite sentence in literature.

Honestly, I had no idea I was using "harmonic confluences". So, I've learned something from your comment soulima! I'll have to go back and look for them. You make a good point about the melody; I wasn't sure if it was too simple. But, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Last Stand by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks everyone! Great point Silky; I will definitely double the strings with some woodwinds. Interesting note about developing parts into glissando runs. I actually used spiccato patches for every string section. Not necessarily the best way to go about it since I should put a little more care into how each part sounds, but it was an easy way to keep my RAM within limits. I'll have to get a little more creative in using my system's resources if I really want to get serious about quality.
Solemn Duty by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks so much everyone! You're right Silky, it is held back, but I was having trouble building more than I already did. smiley And Soulima, you make good points. I have gotten feedback that the piece becomes a bit boring, or dare I say repetitive, at times. Some say the first section is too long. I'm definitely going to take a second look at this piece; the toms are a bit too loud, and I think there are ways for me to make this more interesting, and better. Your comments are encouraging though!

And thank you Vixen and Xolv as well! My process of making this was based purely off of what I wanted to hear. I composed the basics, and figured out what those chords were to fill it out. I'm looking forward to approaching this with a different perspective with your feedback in mind.

Domenico's Adventure by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks ShadowofNine, neurologist, and Bass2x! I quite enjoyed the assignment, as I wanted to compose something worthwhile and enjoyable for me. So glad that it's been enjoyable for others. It's truly wondrous to have the opportunity to create art from academic exercises. smiley I'm very lucky for that.
At The Gate by soulima 1 year ago
Wow. This is great. I love the serenity of this.
Domenico's Adventure by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks everyone! Happy to see such a positive response. smiley I really don't know what that music video would be Trilobite, as I have trouble seeing images to music, oddly enough. So I want to see it as well! smiley

And thanks soulima. It was interesting to compose with such restrictions. A combination of both writing what I wanted to hear, and using chords I had to use. Amazing as well to see how orchestrating breathed a whole new life into it.
Road to Nowhere by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thank you ZipZipper! Quite the compliments; I'm blushing. smiley It feels like I made this ages ago... yet it was just a year ago. I have improved so much since then, and learned even more. It would be fun to go back to this piece, and try to approach it now I know a little better how to make music. smiley

So glad you enjoyed this, and my other works. I took a brief look at some of your pieces. I'm blown away by just the sheer volume of pieces you have! I enjoyed the ones I heard; kind of quirky, and very unique. Wish I had more time to spend here... a lot of great stuff around.
Raise the Sails by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks everyone! I'm glad this was enjoyed. I really appreciate the positive feedback. smiley

AngeloA, I don't think that's a small note at all. The title was really a last second choice; I didn't imagine anything in particular when writing this, oddly. That's why there's no fear or struggle, and why it may be lacking in emotions in general. Certainly in the future, I think I need to be more focused in my writing.

You make a great point about the chiffs zincshed. Those chiffs were kind of unavoidable, and it did occur to me that they might become annoying. I'll try switching out the instrument for a different flute.

Thanks Silky; I'm glad you thought the choirs worked well; honestly, I think they could sound even better. I did double a piccolo with the strings at one point, but I'll have to try it a bit more, to see what the effect is. Thanks for the advice, and I'm glad you found it moving and powerful!
The Dirt Road by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Yep, Soundhound; I was definitely thinking of that film. smiley Still need to see it actually; I've only seen the most famous scene from it. Glad you dig the groove!

Thanks Narananda. It was a little difficult finding the right instruments for the rhythm. I think I succeeded in finding the flavour I wanted. I'm glad you liked it. This was also the first piece where I purposefully used mode mixture to modulate; mainly because I just learned how to last week! So I'm pretty pleased with the progression.

And thanks soulima, and Silky! I heard that Solo Trumpet, and I was just astounded by how real it sounded. (EWQLSO Gold) I had to use it. I'm glad you got that western vibe; that was my intention! Thanks for listening!
And So We Beat On by filmscoremike 1 year ago
Thanks Vixen and Swimmyfishy!

And thanks soulima. I realize it's pretty much the same thing. I still have a ways to go in ear training, so I'm not sure I could hear the notes too accurately with pen and paper. Though... I could sit in front of a piano to start. Certainly worth trying. I'm very happy you liked this. Thanks for the note about the double basses. And you are completely right about the voice leading. I did this entirely by ear, without checking the chords; really kind of lazy, but I enjoyed this piece so much, I will go back and fine tune it, and expand on it. And those hairpins and the dynamic markings is one of the reasons I love the software. smiley

Thanks Silky! I actually love the Cello in it's lower register here. I'll definitely try it in an upper register when I go back to rework this though. Thanks for listening; I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The Warrior's Call by filmscoremike 2 years ago
I haven't listened to Batman Begins for a couple years now, but it is one of my favorite scores. As that's the case, I really have no idea how similar this is to Zimmer, but I knew as I was making it, I was treading closely to Zimmer somehow. I decided to continue without caring though, and I'm glad I did, if only because I learned a lot through making it.
Thanks, Gwen, for listening!

And thanks ShadowofNine! Good points also, as I see what you mean about the frequencies, especially near the end.
It's Not Too Late by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks Jovana! Again, I'm surprised you hear some celtic influence, but that's neat! Thanks for the suggestions. Choir would definitely be possible, and I might try adding it someday.
Memories Past by filmscoremike 2 years ago
It's funny you say that Jovana. I was told that my music teacher in 2nd grade thought I had a knack for music, and should pursue it. I just can't believe now how right she was, and how I never realized it myself until recently. I am actually currently minoring in music, (which may account for some of the improvements in my compositions), and I hope to go to Graduate school for composition.

Thank you! I really appreciate your comments. They will help inspire me to pursue, what really is my dream, and that is music.
The Warrior's Call by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks everyone! I'm so glad this was enjoyed.
And Silky, that's a neat idea; I love the sound of a solo Viola. Might have to play around with that. Thanks!

And thank you Memo226! I know what you mean about it sounding flat. Thanks for the feedback. I definitely need to read up on how to get the most out of the music.
Piano Improv. 2010-2 by telo12 2 years ago
You two should get together more often! Very nice. A lot to like in this. Well, all of it! Enjoyed this.
Thunder by grathy 2 years ago
The name caught my interest as did the picture. I'm glad they did. This definitely creates a feeling. The back and forth of the chords does give it a pensive feel. The strings at the end kind of spiraling downward work really really well in combination. I didn't think the staccato lower strings worked with the rest of the piece, but other than that, well done. I can feel the rain.
Staccato theme by piotrhummel 2 years ago
Honestly, this started a little thin. The staccato strings weren't enough to keep my interest. When this starts building and more layers come into play, it's really neat. I like the addition of the tambourine. Intense indeed, when the brass comes in, and the bigger percussion later on. Definitely building to something, and the staccato gives it a definite pace, and intention. Nice work.
Things I've never told you by dirigent 2 years ago
Man, this was cool. Such a conglomeration of sound, but it creates such a neat and eerie atmosphere and feeling. I also love the brass throughout. Awesome collab.
Every day is good by telo12 2 years ago
Such a lovely melody! I really enjoyed the solo violin and choir that accompanied the staccato strings; very emotive.
TIRED OF YOUR HAIR AND WAYS by Barretok 2 years ago
Really liked the mellow feel of this. The guitar is great. The flute works so well, I didn't even realize it was a flute. I'm not sure what that means, but it must be a good thing. The lyrics did take me by surprise, but they were fun, and totally messed with my expectations, which was great. Really an enjoyable listen!

Thank you tedfire! Now I will make sure to treasure the rest of my time in the practice rooms.

And thanks silky! I'm very glad that the joy, and loss both got through. Good point about keeping the orchestration light, thanks.
Moonlight Sonata by kpenson 2 years ago
Moonlight Sonata was the first piano piece I learned how to play, and is still the most beautiful one I know. Very nice interpretation of it. I especially love how you use the flute. Just added a whole new layer of emotion to it for me.
The Performance by tedfire 2 years ago
Wow! This is impressive. I loved it! Wonderful playing. I'm a little uncertain about the drum beats, just because they don't really seem to fit into the space of the rest of the piece. Still, I thought it was just fabulous.
Trudge by soulima 2 years ago
Just wonderful. I enjoyed this immensely. And your wonderful orchestration, as always, has given me a lot to admire and think about.
Memories Past by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thank you everyone! I was trying to think of a title for this that touched on loss, regret, and nostalgia. I'm glad you picked up on those things from the piece Tony! If I evoke emotion through my music, that is the best compliment of all.

Thanks Omnicell and Soulima! I do think I will be developing this further; perhaps orchestrating parts of it in the future. And I'm so happy that came through ShadowofNine. That was very important to me when I was making it.
Rock 'n Synths by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks soulima! My USB key is probably flying cross-country right now in economy class. Luckily, I got a new one. Though, I never would have made this had I not lost it, so in a way, it was a good thing, otherwise I might never have ventured here.
It's Not Too Late by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks soulima! Celtic influence you say? That's fascinating to me. I've no idea how you got that, but maybe I should start listening to some Celtic music to find out. Interesting note about the French Horn lick. Whether or not it's a problem here (I wasn't exactly going for realism), I really should think about what's playable in future compositions. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

KennidiKing, thanks for your feedback! My list of works in progress doesn't look so daunting next to the number of your 'snippets'. smiley Great you could see this applied to film/tv, and happy to hear you enjoyed it as a standalone piece!
Phantasmagoria by soulima 2 years ago
I really liked how you blended atmosphere with your composition. Of course, composing the atmosphere is just as important as the melodic elements, and I'm so impressed with how you created this atmosphere with your orchestration of instruments. I could really see this in a film. Vividly. So cool. I wouldn't have expected myself to enjoy listening to this, but I really did. The beauty is in the details.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA by alexandre 2 years ago

Thanks for posting this. It's wonderful. Definitely imparts emotion. Simple but perfectly effective. And like dirigent said, excellent production.
Twilight by dcoscina 2 years ago
This is great! Production value of this is amazing. I really am going to listen to all of your other pieces. Honestly I'm not sure if this conveyed a yearning and tragic quality too much, but it conveyed something else for me; of course this doesn't detract from it at all. It is hard to hear the string staccato at the end, but I did hear it subtly, and loved it.
Planet of the Strings- for LA Scoring Strings, VSL Horn, Harp and Flute by dcoscina 2 years ago
I didn't want this to end. The strings sounded amazing. Really enjoyed this, even though it was so short. Makes me want to listen to all your other work. smiley
Siberian Express by soulima 2 years ago
Wow, I'm so impressed by the level of detail that went into this. Wonderful orchestration; neat to hear these instruments together, the way that you used them. I liked how the tempo changed; I rarely hear that in music, and you did it successfully. Thanks!
Feather on the Wind by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks everyone for listening, and for the great feedback! I'm glad it was enjoyed.

Soulima, I'm glad I can render something out that sounds good with very little effort; you're right about the dryness- I'll have to play around with things to see what sounds a little better to my ears.

Dissonance was definitely intended, and I'm glad you thought it worked. As far as the detailing, I'm not sure I even heard the difference sometimes, but I knew that it would be improved subtlety, which I'm glad paid off.

Thanks. I will definitely keep on writing. I've so much more music to share. smiley
Good Bye by neurologist 2 years ago
Nice piece! The suggestion I'd have was voiced by soulima. If you brought the brass and woodwinds up a bit more in places, and the strings down in places, it would add some dynamics. Especially when you have the back and forth between the two.

I really enjoyed this; the instruments complemented each other very well!
Salon Music - Complete by soulima 2 years ago
This is fabulous! (I listened to all the movements over at Bandcamp) I admire how you can write for a genre such as this so well. It was neat to hear a piece with only woodwinds, and piano; I enjoyed the interplay between them. There are so many things I liked about this.
Assyrian Empire by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks everyone! This is one of those pieces for me that I can't judge very well for myself. So it's cool to see such a great response.

You're right soulima, I do need to finish those pieces! I hadn't really considered using woodwinds with this, but it would be interesting to experiment with that.
Minimal by bimmzy 2 years ago
Very nice! I have to agree with Michael; really liked the base line. The theme is wonderful and I liked how it developed. I'd love to hear this expanded even more.
The Final Sunrise by filmscoremike 2 years ago
Thanks lunatrick! I hadn't really considered writing more movements for this... but... I might now. There are definitely more possibilities from this I think.

Re: Everyone smiley
Wow! Really wasn't sure of what the response would be to this. Thanks everyone! Uncle_Moe, that's a great compliment, that I feel I'm undeserving of. I'm still learning, but I'm glad that's paying off. Since I didn't have a plan when I started writing this, it felt like the piece took on a life of its own to me as well. smiley

Soulima, funny story about the percussion... I'm usually just terrible with it, but I got incredibly lucky with this song. Switching the percussive instruments to all the Midi channels gave me some neat ideas. I almost feel like I should have paid more attention to detail with it, especially near the end, but I'm so glad you liked it.
Thanks!
The Death of a Party by herrsolera 2 years ago
Love this. I know this is true of all your songs, but the instrumentation is wonderful; the combination of classical instruments, and the metal. You do it so well. Really enjoyed this.
A little haunted (imaginary film scene) by georgeptingley 2 years ago
Very cool. The sound indicates to me a feeling of a dream world, or just a very weird and off putting setting. I agree, it's nice as it is. I like the pacing of the piece, with the pauses in between the musical phrases.

Losing You Again by filmscoremike 3 years ago
Thank you EddiFranklin and herrsolera! I'll be uploading a remastered and lengthened version of this song at some point. This portion will probably stay melodically the same, as I've grown to like it as it is, but I'll be taking it in some interesting directions at the end.

I also checked out the song by Balok. Thank you! Very nice stuff. Your comments have been great; thanks for introducing me to some great songs.
Piano Escape by filmscoremike 3 years ago
Thanks DarryIM! I won't change it at all; it's grown on me over the past few days. smiley

And thank you for the compliments herrsolera. When I put this up at first, I thought that people might stop listening when they heard the beginning (I would), so I'm glad my disclaimer worked. The slow beginning is actually the weakest portion of the song because it's not exactly how I would imagine it should be; just slightly off.

Thanks for the recommendation! I liked it a lot. And I'm flattered that you downloaded it; that's the greatest compliment you could give. I look forward to checking out some of your music.
Metal Orchestra by filmscoremike 3 years ago
Thanks soulima, Bowman, and herrsolera!

I have listened to Kamelot, and I enjoy them every once and a while. I'll have to look up Therion. I suppose the reason why it's not cookie cutter, is because I don't really have a good sense of what cookie cutter is for symphonic metal. smiley I sort of brought my own musical style to the instruments resulting in this weird tune. The part where the style transitions to the finale was the most challenging part of the song for me, but it's my favorite part as well. And I will take your recommendation to heart. smiley
Metal Orchestra by filmscoremike 3 years ago
Thanks everyone! I did check out The Great Demise, liquidsound; thanks so much for mentioning it, because I thought it was awesome. DJ Shadowkat, glad you liked the combo. Never done a collab before, but I'm open to it; just let me know. And I suppose the reason it does have some crazy turns, fminorpenta, is because I did not start writing this with any plan for how it would end. That seems to lend to some weird twists and turns as I make it. smiley

RE: CharlyDeeCynth, soulima, feenixx

Thanks for the comments and compliments!

I also wondered about percussion. Unfortunately, I'm terrible with percussion. I'll have to play around with it though.
Debt by filmscoremike 3 years ago
Why thank you very much! I'm just beginning to try my hand at composing. Very encouraging to hear! You may be right about having softer piano. I hadn't thought of that possibility; thanks. Since I'm not quite done with this piece, I'll have to try that.
Third by filmscoremike 4 years ago
Thanks for the compliments! And suggestions!

I think I will reconsider the drums in the piece, and try and find or create something I think fits. I'm definitely going to play with this a little and make a longer, hopefully better, piece, with a better ending (with a better name). I may have rounded up on the time it took, but in any case, I do want to spend more time working with it, because I do agree it can be longer, and should be longer.

I'm really happy to see these responses, because I'm going to continue making more songs now that I know my ideas aren't terrible. smiley
Third by filmscoremike 4 years ago
Thanks so much jobl for the compliments. And thanks for the advice! I knew the instruments sounded terrible, and I had no idea there was a way to improve the sound.
