I wish I knew how it would feel to be free (cover) by Sverker 6 years ago
Howdy Sverker! Long time no comment! I really dig your voice and playing on this tune. This tune showcases your voice wonderfully. Perfect range for you... There is a fair bit of distortion in the vocal as I'm listening on my computer speakers. i don't know if perhaps you just recorded it too hot or you may be able to fix that with mixing. I think all the pieces are there to make this really great but it just needs to be a little tighter. When I get to a point like that I usually have to re-record the whole tune. As if the first recording was the demo...Look forward to hearing anything you do with this further.

Too cool. Too smooth. The "jazz violin" section is wild. This tune is very refreshing... live instruments can't be beat! I also really like the organ and synth supporting licks... it adds a nice touch without getting in the way. Compliments everything nicely.

I listened to this again and can see how you might say you hear "Mr". I definitely sang "Master" but then again I've never be known as someone who had perfect diction!

I really liked this! The sound of the piano reminds me of the tapes full of Sunday afternoon recordings I have from many many years ago. So much so that I feel like this piece was all for me! Thanks!

Good tune! I think the idea is great. The mixing is a little off but nothing that can't be fixed. Thanks for sharing.

Very impressive! The sax trio is fantastic. I also like the build towards the end. I agree about not really making out the lyrics but otherwise a great tune!
As It Turns Out by giovanni 8 years ago
Hey Sverker - I'm flattered! Yeah this song is at the top of my range and unfortunately the day I recorded it I had a cold. I've been meaning to re-record the vocals but there never seems to be a good time to do it since, when I have a free moment I generally try to do something new!

Very nice. The key change was awesome. A little stereo separation would be great and I'd probably add a little 'verb to "energize" the mix. Cool Stuff!

Overture-Bring Back the Cold War by ivanjs 8 years ago
Very intriguing... Good use of thematic elements. I don't hear any timing issues... I would say it has an unusual feel but it doesn't sound off to me. Definetly sounds like you're setting the stage for something... somewhat like the overture from 2112 sets the mood. Look forward to hearing more.

A homecoming by Sverker 8 years ago
Very nice tune! You made some great, refreshing choices in the structure of the song... kept me interested through to the end! My only suggestion would be to move the lead vocal closer to the center of the mix. I think that's where the focus of this tune is and by having it off to the side, perhaps some of what you've done is lost.
Duelling Keyboards by Xaqtly 8 years ago
You really gave the piano and organ their own personalities. Sounded like two different players. Excellent work!
As Only You Can by giovanni 8 years ago
Hey gost... I've got a MOTU 828 (connects to my eMac via FW) with an AT4033 microphone. I'm rather pleased with this mic all around... only it doesn't correct my intonation which currently suffers because I have to wait until the kids are in bed to record the vox and my voice is very tired by then!!! As far as the settings in GB, I've been using the Male Basic and just tweaking the reverb a little. Though it all depends on what kind of tune I'm doing...

How'd I miss this jewel? Nice! Might you consider playing a guitar solo on one of my tunes that I'm working on? Don't worry... its not musical theatre!! HAHAHAHA
Always The Lion by giovanni 8 years ago
Z293 - If I had a dollar every time I've heard someone say "I'm not into musicals" my house would be paid off! In reality, its funny since "musicals" covers a lot of different styles. This tune happens to be a little more traditional but there are tons of shows out there that are rock/jazz/pop/classical/etc. based!

Prongs - interesting suggestion... I'll give it a try and see how it fits. Wicked? I've done the lottery they hold before each show but didn't get in. Since it's one of the only original things on broadway right now its definitely on my list!
As Only You Can by giovanni 8 years ago
Thanks for the kind words. Z293 - yep this is completely a GB tune. I've actually been using GB instead of DP4 lately since I can get to a finished idea much faster. DP4 is much more powerful but it takes a lot longer to use all that power. Still, GB is lacking in the tempo/timing department.

Hey jlgerk- your comment made me laugh... a lot!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Hey Sverker - Thanks for the kind words... especially since you're not into musicals. Sorry if its not clear in my description but this isn't a cover... I wrote it and I'm currently rewriting the whole piece now.
Smoothed by Z293 8 years ago
dude - I'm really into your playing... The opening is great. Listening to your other post I totally agree with you... between this version and the other is perfection. I think what this version has over the other is you're playing less - I'm a firm believer that being a good musician is not only knowing what to play but also WHEN (and when not!) to play. You might also consider sustaining a note over the piano chord climbs... Let the piano give us the transitions... Lastly there was a bend in there that kinda sticks out as being a little out of tune. That said... you had me at the first note... dig your sound.

Four More Years by LeaJones 8 years ago
Really good! Funny (and sorta sad too!). Ok... here's my comments about lyrics and arrangements... In the opening (the recitative section) you have the vocal melody hit the "leading note" (F#) twice. It may be more effective if you hit that note only once into the meat of the tune. It kinda threw me since I thought the bit about the doctor was the "meat". Not sure if any of that makes sense. Anyway, your lyrics are very clever... my only comment is that you changed the rhyme scheme on the verse about Cheney and that stuck out at me as something odd. Look forward to hearing your progress.

Good tune! And its so refreshing to hear the sax.
Up to you by Sverker 8 years ago
I like the direction... a remix as mentioned will help the impact since the vocal seems very distant from the instrumentation. You might also want to look at this tune for places where it might build. It seems to me that you have a pretty good cadence going but the lyrics are suggesting a build into a chorus and the melody wants to follow but is sort of trapped. I find the piano (and loops!) very restricting when I'm writing a tune and sometimes I go into another room and sing the song without any accompaniment and see where my vocal takes me. Then I try to fit the piano to that. A technique like that might help you take this tune to the next level. Keep it up... Its got lots of potential.

The organ did it for me as well. Ya just open the valve to "Jam Bands" when it comes in. Good groove...
String Practice by OldLady 8 years ago
Loops or no loops... it doesn't matter much to me. I judge on the musicality of the piece. Does it make sense musically? Does it "do" something? Does it hold my interest? When a tune does all these things and then makes me say to myself, "Cool!" (as this one does), I give it a 5.

Awesome tune OldLady... I'll be checking out your other stuff.

I'll tell ya... if my wife could learn to talk like "Vicki" we'd... ah... scratch that... we'd probably just end up with more kids! Well constructed!
Thick Dark Glasses by myridan 8 years ago
Maybe its because the vocals are pretty loud compared to the rest of the instrumentation, but there are places in this tune that I'm not feeling the chord changes. I'd probably lower the vocal a little. Otherwise it seems to be a well constructed tune.

Awake in Sleepy Hollow by LedQuagga18 8 years ago
I think this is an excellent foundation... However I agree with BlackLily - I think this tune needs a melody... either a voice or guitar or synth or a kazoo for that matter. Right now it sounds like a good chord progression but I think there's more there. Also, for me the drums were clipping so a quick remix might be good as well. I'm eager to hear this tune again with any revisions you make... I think it has great potential.
electro fusion 1 by ericcart 8 years ago
I agree with Cockeyed on both counts... need more of the melody in the mix and chuck a title on there. A title is the first impression of a tune for me... without one I think the listener is lost.
If I Could Live Long Enough by TobinMueller 8 years ago
Wow! Impressive piece of work. If I had to put money on it... I'd say you do a bit of musical theatre. You have a wonderfully open voice and this tune definitely has a theatrical aspect to it. My only suggestion: your rich voice is awesome but I'd probably eq it a little to make it less bassy. I think it gets a little muddy in places. Do us a favor and post some more!

Thanks for the feedback! It would be great if I were still in touch with Nia. As for the "burps"... I do hear a few things in there that are bothering me especailly now that I've gotten some sleep! (Why do things always sound better at 3 am???!) Might you give me a hint as to where those burps are so I can fix 'em? I might be missing them being too close to it and all. That reminds me though... When is GB going to be able to switch time sig's mid piece?!?! I had to cut a 4/4 loop down to 7/8 for the bridge and that's when the alignment of everything became quite difficult!
