Biography
Born in Silver Springs, Maryland, Gavin holds a B.S. and M.M. degree from Northwest Missouri State University where he studied conducting with Alfred E. Sergel III. He also attended graduate school at the University of Kansas where he studied composition with professor James Barnes and horn with professor Dr. Paul Stevens. From 2004 – 2006 he served as a graduate assistant for the University of Kansas bands with Dr. John Lynch, Director of Bands.
His music is known for incorporating rich harmonies and dramatic counter lines. Both students and teachers find his music to be accessible and enjoyable to play. He has received several commissions throughout the United States including a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. An avid horn player, Gavin has performed with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, the KU Orchestra, the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra and served as principal horn for the Lawrence City Band under the direction of Robert Foster. He is currently principal horn of the Platte City Community band along with his wife Stacy.
Gavin currently resides in Olathe, KS with Stacy and his stepson Alex.
