I whole-heartedly agree. They are jarring indeed! These cello-vocal pieces are nothing but butterflies trapped from my gut at this point. Wet-winged and half-digested at best. It will take me another year yet to find the time to do this justice, but I will. I have to do some surgery to re-impose order ; )

Hmm, or maybe it's the surreal I've been trying to bottle. I don't know, man! I'm a damn walkin' contradiction.

I think I'm warring with perfectionism. When I used to take piano and then cello, they make you try so hard to be perfect. Technically perfect and imitate the greats. But I think every human has their own reality. They just erase parts of themselves that nobody else is approving of. So sick of being constantly corrected and personality being selectively deleted! I want to hear things I NEVER heard before. I want raw "ugly" new tonal qualities that you're not supposed to make in classical training. Cause, damnit, I like it!!
The Sacred and the Profane by hasacat 4 months ago
Thank you for the encouragement, guys! It could do with some proper effects and mic rather than recording both vocals and cello together in the dang imac pinhole mic. But, I still want that live, raw imperfection in the sound. I crave the analog I grew up with. That lovely static. I used to record everything onto cassettes because it sounded better to me, haha! Sounded warmer, more real.

You have a distinctive habit of layering in thick textures! They ground your deeply introverted, psychological melodic themes somehow. Almost like the real world intruding on your thoughts...which are definitely memories, tapes that keep playing in your head. This is beautiful.

Thank you so much, @jkane. Amping is my next step(and practicing, haha!). I did this weirdness live a couple weeks ago and wasn't booed off, so here I go! My current song in progress is heavy into PJ territory too. I guess I speak her language : )

Your Film Project pieces all sound like they come from the same cloth and weave quite a complex turn of events. I think you were very successful with the translation of your ideas!
Invisible Picture Show - Day 2 - ReMix by AuDioChosis 6 months ago
Brutal, wow! Fantastically terrifying sounds. This piece definitely is heavy on activity compared to some of your more meditative pieces. A lot going on here in an unrestful mind. : )

Visually stimulating...a very beautiful and spiraling fractal-like soundscape. The heavy textural ripping of reality into the last bit gives an exciting contrast to the smooth psychological sounds of the main section. It also offers resolution for the hidden tension that was building under the main section. Nice work!!

Very eerie, especially with the title. And again, I find myself narrating a very unusual tale to the audio cues you lay down.

Damn this kept me wondering! I was not at all expecting the bass to come in, and then it melted like a sugar cube into acid jazz territory, then brighter brassier jazz, then psychedelic tropical paradise and all at once again. Wow colorful!!! Delicious!

The string noise becomes so rhythmic, it's silly but I keep imagining it's a bodily noise of this little puppet guy walking away on his own, deeply pensive but locked into physical reality by some painful arthritic/wounded joint...my imagination tends to run away when I zone out. Very cool background sounds zinging in an out.

I'm yearning to create something new, that doesn't need to be turned up ridiculously loud, that is almost uncomfortably immediate and very much performance/improv-based. I am tired of fake glossy magazine pics of celebrities, and of painfully loud rock concerts. Why do we turn it up so loud we can't feel anymore, and destroy our ears? Who says it has to be like this? No! No, no, no! I want be real. I want the music to be artful and naked and honest and brave.
If you don't like it by hasacat 7 months ago
Yeah, it's so funny. I am going through this freakish transformation and my cello has become my wings! I swear I can fly now, but I'm still developing my flight muscles. They're a little spastic and involuntary at times as I'm singing along. But I have to do this!!! I play it standing only. It really makes me aggressive, haha.

Holy sweet cows, I am honored for the comparison but I can't be put in the same sentence with Bjork! She was my primary role model for deviance-with-a-conscience as a teenager. There is no one like her. She gave so many people the permission to color outside the lines-like many greats before her. Thank you for the encouragement. It is most deeply appreciated : )

AH! This is fantastic, clever, artistic, authentic, gorgeous, and intriguing! The crackle is lovely and special to me because I still remember listening over and over to my favorite early bands on vinyl. When CD came along and those old favorites were remastered...like my David Bowie and my Tchaikovsky I was actually disgusted and irritated by the sharp harsh perfection. Apparently white noise has different effects on people depending on their personal experiences with it. I love this though. I love to see art as the superimposed layer of reality it is, not necessarily true to life. Surreal, mental!

This is so unfinished and larval. I appreciate your reflections. In a year I anticipate this is going to be so strong, but I can't keep it under my hat that long. Get so damned excited. Thank you for curiously enduring the process. And there are a couple punk ballet troupes I saw in New York that totally would work with this weirdness!!!

It's funny, this pleasantly spoken anguish. In combination with the starry haze, I must say I find it suggestive of indulgence in some opiate during a half-hearted spell of self-loathing. I like the clever combination. Definately not a half-hearted musical effort though, you guys! Very nice work!

I really like your rough sound because it suggests genuine emotion and vulnerablilty(which takes courage). If you wanted to be commercial you might want to master your levels, but I wouldn't recommend it myself. You are on a unique path and you will find yourself only by writing what's coming out on its own already. My god! if you're interested in listening to music similar to you, I wonder if you have ever listened to Erik Sanko?! You have a voice kind of like his. Keep making this great, powerful raw stuff. It's good.

What a find! Listening to the original version first, I took the lyrics "..keep you good" literally, but with Freud's additions--and perhaps multiple listens--this has taken on a more eerie tone. More possessive and stronger than the sweet voice lets on. Very enjoyable composition and collaboration.

Reading your lyrics first, their actual interpretation caught me by surprise. The catchy, buoyant drums and guitar make it seem you are quite content with who you are(which you should be!) and yet the vocals have that touch of pain and anxiety proving your discomfort.

There is an innocence that shows itself off and on. I enjoyed the contrast between that and the frenetic aggression. I felt somewhat pulled outside of the mix by the low click, as if there was another perspective from the outside not moving at the same speed. Like being aware of the stationary needle arm hoovering over a record. Maybe you intended that though in your sampling.

This is one of those rare songs I come across(less than 15 in my lifetime so far) that I just get OCD and leave it playing on repeat--for hours. This is just CATHARTIC, and beautifully produced.
Greg's backing really resonates with the light guitar that comes floating up. I love the crazy sense of accent rhythm-the ravens, claps and crashes---the bell-like drum sounds. It makes me laugh inside while I'm also consumed by the depressive literal lyrical mood. I get this really messed up sense of delirium-like smiling with joy when someone you loves is crying in anguish--because you get to taste the real thing.
You've created something pure here. It is so distilled it draws out all my base emotions. The ones that come before words. Age, your voice and lyrics nestle perfectly into this fine composition. Very fine job on production, as usual ; )

Yes, I was feeling quite salty. I've posted the lyrics if it helps. I know I get vague sometimes in their vocal translation. By salt I was thinking more precisely really of the grains of sand in oysters that supposedly create the coveted pearl, not out of beauty or to entice but because it was irritating and so cocooned in the oysters own smooth bony secretions. Just thought it was interesting how you said "it shaped the song"!

Lovely little earwig you have there by the foot! Misha, you have such a developed sense of melody and harmony. I just don't hear this often, outside of the classical realm of yore! I really think you have the makings and breadth of knowledge that one sees in an orchestral composer. I would love to hear your compositions played by a full orchestra someday.
