I don't have a midi kb, so everything is done in the sequencer. That human touch sound is lost. By mechanical, I think that's what you're referring to?
Interluud by help420me 2 years ago
The snare is actually there, but I didn't use a limiter this time so it's not very apparent.

Yeah, I still haven't figured out how to do some relatively basic things in Fruity Loops. Stuff like reverb, flange, phaser, even simple panning. HAAH! Like, I'll record the panning effect, but it seems a very crude implementation.

Glad you could enjoy it.

The Beat Goes On (intermission) by help420me 4 years ago
I'll make a convert outta you yet smiley

I always have this lil beat stuck in my head, ever since 2nd grade. Way back in my rollerskating days (yeah, i had some groovy black He-Man rollerskates, beat that) I used to get down to some funky sounding stuff in the rink. I used to beat out this simple sounding rhythm while waiting to play handball. It's just stuck with me over the years.

Every time I do something with it, I enjoy how it turns out. I'm sure there'll more with that progression I like to build on.

Somethin fun I just cranked out really quick. Glad you could enjoy it!!
Come On by help420me 4 years ago
I'm a big classic rock fan, but in the stuff I do, I take from everything I can and make something new. I usually start with an idea or an emotion and keep it focal throughout production. I've been leaning towards more synthy relaxing type sounds lately.

Thanks for the comparison Chris!! smiley
Ah The Wave Final by help420me 4 years ago
I wanted a steady build up of the basslines. There's a progression to the arpeggio throughout that builds on the lead synth. I could've brought the bass kick out a bit earlier, give a more bouncy feel, but I wanted to emphasize the smoothness of the synths more and add the danceline afterwards, something to get down to.

Thanks for listening!

Sounds great to me. I really dig the strings, they bring an old musty feeling to the entire piece. I also enjoyed the brass break towards the end, but I was getting some clipping. When you render an mp3, try using 32-bit float instead of 16-bit resolution. I think that would help. Normalization might help with that too.

Keep having fun and I'll keep listening.
Timeout by help420me 4 years ago
i did this in fruity loops, not garageband. ended up with a waveform collision at the end that sounds like a sample from The Crystal Method. Purely my 303s, I swear!

Distortion Worship by help420me 4 years ago
When i master, i make sure everything is at level and decide to normalize or not. I max out my playback volume, adjusting the levels and compose in that environment, keeping an eye on the db meter.

I'm going for loud. I'll work on a soft quiet song, see if how that turns out.

Also,

I can try remastering it, adjusting the levels. Which aspect seemed to loud or not loud enough?

I have a 4ohm 10" generic radio shack sub as my main speaker with highs split across two channels. My high quality headphones are borken and I need a new pair. 8D
Two Hearts by Saltydog 4 years ago
great piece! had my fiance check it out.

It's fantastic, however in the mastering, the piano kinda drowns out the vocals. Raising the level on the voice a half db or so, while lowering the piano a tad'll let the vocals come out a bit more.

In the break with the voxy synth towards the end, the levels sound great. Note how the vocals coming in sound too much in the background.

Beautiful outro.

Rising Phoenix by help420me 4 years ago
I used every waveform available in that piece, including many combinations and permutations with sliders, buttons, and knobs handling the fine tuning for me. lots of knobs. I count 20 off the top of my head along with 12 buttons. Makes for a lotta combinations. If I had to do it all over again the exact same way, I couldn't. I lost my first take to a mastering SNAFU, I'd say that first take was the best one.

Popped Phoenis by help420me 4 years ago
Your contribution to this is a full 6dB higher than the other track, from start to finish. I ramped it up in the beginning cuz I wanted mostly the vocals and highs coming through from the other track, but without using high or low-pass filters.

I'll do what you said from now on. Want I should take this down and try again?

I just visually did the beat matching cuz they were so in-synch with each other through the whole song, down to the bridges.

:edit:

I just thought of it... this is beat matching and not a live performance. I just line up the tracks to where I think they sound like they combine into a 3rd new sounding element and let it go. What I'll do is actually write a new song in response to Hypnotech.

regards.

Exit Abyss - Otter's Saturday Morning Clam mix by help420me 4 years ago
believe it or not, all the sounds are various tb303 emulations through a 3xOsc. each percussion instrument is independently sampled live drumkit, snare and two cymbals, whereas all the bass are also tb303->3xOsc. this mix amplifies the phaser and underlying effects generated by the low range waveforms intersecting and changes the overall intro and outro feel.
Cogsley by help420me 4 years ago
i don't know how good our laptop speakers are, but there's a lot of low range activity in this piece (<35Hz). having a system with a great frequency response range with minimal harmonic distortion played at high volume generates the greatest experience, however the binaural effects decrease with the intensity of each channel not being focused directly on each independent ear. as for the buzz imparticular, i can't really say for certain what you're calling a buzz and what's part of the movement.
Cogsley by help420me 4 years ago
that happened during recording and not encoding. i was generating above the recordable ceiling during certain binaural peaks and after being encoded, they just kinda seem to be missing.
