Hi Rebecca - creeping round you site - thought I had better own up this time in case you caught me again. A great piece - I love the words used in some of the comments made.....

Bellissimo has got to be a good start

Mirerious - I would love someone to describe one of my pieces as mirerious - I believe it actually refers to a condition of the nasal passages - the stage between completely blocked and free flowing that comes at that point in an upper respiratory tract infection when things start to loosen up a little - my left nostril is slightly more mirerious than the right one - true praise indeed but be careful where you sneeze. But then again it could be a typing error.

Mikrokosmos - another great word as is otherworldly.

Really like the piece - very nicely put together and I liked the awkwardness of it all - never quite settling into a comfort zone.

Talk to you soon,

Howard

By the way the track you contributed to is still my biggest "hit"

Hi Mysti.,

This song is beautiful and your voice is the same.

One of my favourite artists ever is Beth Nielsen Chapman - she has a lovely voice too. Most of her work is nothing like this song. However she has done an album called "Hymns".

Your piece would fit in very nicely to that album and you would give her a run for her money in a singing contest.

Well done and so to the iPod!

OPEN COLLAB (acoustic guitars) by Ignoramus 1 year ago
I will take Geechi3's lead and call you Jay - Ignoramus is such an unbecoming name. I downloaded your piece and I really like the idea of you offering it up for collaboration. The biggest problem with it is that it is about 10 minutes too short. I have added some piano and a little bit of horn - a bit rough on my part but I am winding down for my holidays so I don't want to get too picky. I think your guitar sound is lovely - clean and fresh and simple. I found it a lot easier to follow than I might have expected too - simple is good. I will post my version to my page (howardjackson) so you can have a listen and I will watch out for other offerings. Thanks for posting it.

Echoes of Yesterday by howardjackson 1 year ago
Hi Haven,

Thanks for your comment - as you can see comments are pretty thin on the ground. I always like to get some feedback and it is interesting to look at the comments of other people in contrast to my piano teacher.

My piano teacher produces meditative music and he also runs meditation classes (he specialises in it). He actually really liked this piece - and that feels good because when he does not like what I have done he tells me in no uncertain terms!

What he says about meditation music is that it's job is to create an atmosphere without being intrusive. It is almost like a picture frame for a painting - if you notice the frame, it is detracting from the painting.

So the advice I got from my teacher is - keep it simple/ non -intrusive/ minimalist.

What is interesting is where you mention about using some more brass. Just before sending you this message I have written to Bass2x asking if he would be able to put a trumpet track to another of my semi meditative pieces - spooky!

So thanks again for taking the time to send me a comment.

If you are interested in doing something together I am more than happy to give it a try. I have listened to some of your work and I think I sent you a couple of comments a few days ago - especially Tubular Bells which I listened to this evening when I was walking the dog. I really like it but sadly it is about 17minutes too short!

Ashley's Journey by Haven 1 year ago
Hi Haven,

I am just listening to Ashley's Journey and have read the lyrics. Very sad.

Right through my childhood I wanted a dog and was denied that pleasure by parents who thought it might be a passing phase. I don't think it would have been. Anyway as I was coming to the end of my degree course in 1976 I made the decision that whatever life might bring I was going to have a dog. I did a bit of research and thought about a few different breeds. I wanted a dog that was reasonably rugged that could accompany me on long Salmon fishing day. However at the time my transport was a Honda 90. I don't know where you are from or if Honda 90's (90cc) traveled to your part of the world but it was a very small morebike (scooter) that got me to school /college and the river. Any dog that I got had to be small enough to travel in a canvas bag that hung from my neck.

Sally travelled thousands of miles in the bag and was my constant companion for ten years (after the first year or two I got a car so life became easier). She had pups and my mum and dad had one of them - Bess. I never really came to terms with the fact that they had denied me a dog for a lifetime and yet had one of Sally's pups at the first time of asking.

I still have a soft spot for Cocker Spaniels despite the fact that they are filthy creatures. I now have a Jack Russell Terrier which is much cleaner.

So sorry to hear about Ashley,

One Night Off Duke's Boulevard (An Urban Tale) by mbehar 1 year ago
Hi Mori,

This is a really unusual and different piece with an excellent atmospheric quality - sweaty, sleazy and menacing. Is James playing a real horn? - it sounds fabulous - if it is a Garageband instrument - could you let me know what it is?

The other question is - how old are you? - strange question maybe but listening to this piece has made me think that you are younger than I did.

A Ghost Rider's Keepsake(Live) by GhostRiders3 1 year ago
Hi Guys,

I had a good listen to your track and it took me back to the 70's - Yes, Man, etc.

After a while it started to get a bit repetitious and it struck me that your work could be a really good launch pad to go into other instruments - maybe like Pink Floyd - synths or strings or piano etc.......

I would be interested in having a go to try to put in some other sections. But you have said No derivative works allowed. Let me know if you want to do something.

Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen by ssstebbe 1 year ago
Once again - nice tune, very well played.

Re. longdistance collaboration......

A few years ago when I discovered that major artists would record their individual parts on opposite sides of the country I was very surprised and I thought the whole thing was a bit distasteful because I felt that real connection demanded that musicians should be in the same room and able to see the whites of each others eyes. In a way I still think that but for hundreds of thousands of less famous/ rich performers and composers the long distance thing is brilliant. I have done a track with Jeff D. Elliot from Canada and another with Wakegirlsarah from California Bay. I am hoping to something with Richter (London) so it is conceivable that I could meet him sometime.

iCompositions/ Garageband opens so many doors and provides a tremendous amount of stimulation (but if you are listening Stevie Wonder - you can afford to get in the same room as your band).

Best wishes,

Howard

Oh My God,

The traffic in Melbourne must be pretty bad. There a film starring Michael Douglas called "Falling Down" - about a man who gets fired, loses the plot and starts killing people - it doesn't sound brilliant but it is a surprisingly good film. Ring a ring would make a good sound track for it. I liked the piece - alterrnative and different and nicely put together.

Sorry Ghost,

You probably think I am mad. I went into Richter's tunes and instead of listening to one of his pieces I went into one of his favourites which is this tune - the comment about the production still holds true because it does sound great but the stuff about working together applied to Richter not you - though on listening to this piece I would be interested. Confused? - me too.

Hi Annamaria,

Same comment from me - really enjoyed the track and I think your vocal would fit very nicely with some of the piano music that I do which is influenced by Keith Jarrett (Jazz/ Classical pianist). Hi Annamaria,

I liked this track very much - it is a bit weird and strange and alternative. A little while ago I started to put a note on my tunes saying that I would like to work with some female vocalists to do some alternative things and maybe move in the direction of Bjork. If you are interested in working together let me know - you could listen to some of my tunes and then see what you think.

Lovely, expressive, emotional music which was really nice to listen to. I enjoyed it a lot. For the future I think it would be good if your transition from one section to another is smoother - sometimes there is quite a jump from one nice part to the next nice part - just the little bit in between could be worked on.

Some really nice themes especially the one that is based on the funeral march - it comes in around three quarters of the way through the piece. Hi Geechi,

I love your voice and the way you use it. My own preference would be that you should bring the voice forward (make it louder) against the instruments/ loops. It seems to be quite common on iComp that the voices are a little bit crowded out by the instruments. Maybe that is because people start with the instruments and then invite in a singer. For me (especially with your voice) the vocals need to be bigger. But still absolutely fab.

Pachyderm Sunset by becwil 2 years ago
Hi Becwil,

I talked to you a couple of months ago when I spotted that you had used an image of a bridge in one of you photographs. You sent me some nice comments so thanks for them.

This piece is very spooky and the feel of India/ the East is so strong. It also sheds light on the meaning of Pachyderm. I am pretty sure that Joni Mitchell uses it in one of her songs (Hissing of Summer Lawns album or round about that time). I never bothered to look it up in the dictionary then but I have now.

I loved the elephant story - amazing and terrifying at the same time. But it did make me wonder what you do for a living because I don't think I have ever come across anyone who seems to travel so much and so widely?

Howard
Trail of Tears by wakegirlsarah 2 years ago
Hi Sarah,

Thanks for sharing this song which I really enjoyed. You have got a really nice voice which reminds me a bit of the woman in Capercaillie. I particularly liked the backing vocals which are really haunting. You have got some brilliant comments and you need to get some confidenence from them. Use that confidenence to bring your voice further forward in the mix which is music talk (I think) for making your voice louder and the instruments quieter - that would make the vocals that little bit more powerful.

I would be interested in seeing if I could add anything with a little bit of background piano. If you fancy a try at that would you e mail the Garageband file to me at jacksonhjay@a0l.com - it is very early days for me in terms of collaboration but I would like to give it a go.

The other point is that at my piano lesson last night I said to my teacher that I would like to do something with a female vocalist that was very alternative and I quoted Bjork as an example. I would be interested in someone putting a floating vocal to one of my piano pieces - not so much a song as a vocal tune - edgy, maybe a bit weird.

If you are interested in giving it a go we could learn together. Let me know.

I am going on holiday at the end of this week so if you do reply I may not be able to get back to you for around 3 weeks.
