| Overture-Bring Back the Cold War by ivanjs | 8 years ago |
| Giovanni- Thanks and definitely Neil, Geddy and Alex were HUGE influences on me when I was learning bass and music in general (2112 is still one of my favorite albums). I loved the whole concept album thing from the 70s. I'm working on 2 more songs for my concept. One is kind of serious, the other is pure dark humor, but both relating to the cold war. I keep (happily) getting sidetracked with collaborations with others here and on Macjams and Musiconthemac, so hopefully I'll post some more of this soon. John |

| Hey Bean, thanks for the comment, and you're right, it's not very original. I'm a latent punk fan, and most of the stuff I've heard so far is pretty unoriginal (even though I LOVE Anarchy in the UK), yet full of energy and passion. So I guess I was trying to keep it simple and trite for the fun and energy of it. Take care and thanks for taking the time to critique fairly. John |

| Hey- Thanks for the comments. They're appreciated. And definitely thanks for not judging it based on it not being the genre you'd normally listen to. That's pretty open minded in my book. True punk fans would scoff at my using the genre of "punk" (well, punk-lite actually) but I did that due to the music and the attitude of the lyrics. The mouth chant is available on here as a loop and I welcome anyone to download it and put it to use (just mention where it came from, eh? ![]() Love to hear what you can do with it if you're interested. Have fun!!! John http://homepage.mac.com/johnselvia/ |

| Conor- Thanks I appreciate your comment. I saw you over on macjams, and saw that you do bass and guitar. Learning towards one or the other? Just curious. I'm getting more and more in the guitar side of things (3 years now), and was just wondering which you prefer if any. Thanks again for listening. John |

| Easy (Mellow Blues) by ivanjs | 8 years ago |
| Thanks, Z- Yeah, that was me on guitar. I have enough theory to get where I want to go, but I'm struggling with the speed of my chops, which will only come with practice. But this song was a nice slow moody tune that didn't require fast chops, so I felt more comfortable with it. I practice daily at least an hour, usually more, mostly on developing speed and chord structure. When I started guitar 3 years go, I only practiced once a week or less due to frustration I'm pretty fluent on bass so it felt very very awkward to start at the beginning on guitar, even though there were similarities enough to ease the transition. I'm no where near where I want to be on guitar, but now I at least "get it" and can do something with my limited knowledge. Now if I only had time to pick up piano (had 2 years of it 30 years ago, and actually remembe most of what I had then, I just haven't practiced in almost 20 years. Funny thing is, and I'm sure this has to do with playing bass, I can play very very fast on the piano WITH ONE HAND!!! I have to work on separating my brain so both hands can work independently. ![]() A group of us over at macjams.com are getting a virtual band together where we collaborate and eventually we hope to produce a finished album (can you still call it an album these days?) I love the internet. John |

| Overture-Bring Back the Cold War by ivanjs | 8 years ago |
| Well, I've listened and listened and had friends listen and we're not hearing the timing thing. Even put it into editing software where I could scrub it slooooooowly and everything sounds right. I think it's more of a back beat kind of feel where the beat is a little unsyncopated or something (on purpose). As far as the drums, they're supposed to get quiet (and "generic" during the solo, to change the mood. Otherwise, for the type of song, the drums work great. Thanks for the comments. John |

| Thanks. I'm going to reupload it with out the guitar, because I'm still getting my chops and I want to see what a real guitarist can do with it like they've done with my Bass and Drums jam (I've gotten some great collaborations with that one!) John |

| Hey, Linda (finally I can call you by name!) Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I like fun stuff every now and then instead of the hard, techno, metal, hard rock, thingys I try to do usually. I'm working on one right now about a Russian factory worker who gets mixed up with the Russian Mafia and ends up being a paperweight, but don't tell anyone! ![]() Take care and thanks again. John |

| gsharp- Hey, very cool feel. Love to give it a go on guitar (if that is how I'm reading your post ![]() What's funny is one of the folks commenting above gave your piece's ending a similar critique as she gave my song's ending! Sort of a digital rubber stamp as it were ![]() Nice job indeed. John |

| Mark- Thanks for not bashing the song just because the style isn't to your taste. I think the strong open thing you're talking about is a reflection of my influences-songs which either start out hard, take a breather then come back hard, or those that start slow, build to a peak, and then mellow out. Hope I'm not stuck in a rut, however... ![]() John |

| Hey- Yeah, I'm plugging the bass directly in the imic and using effects in GB for the final sound. That's also how I do guitar. I have a Zoom pedal, but the effects in GB are pretty nice, so I just modify those til I get the distortion I want. What a bargain!!! Looking forward to anything you come up with. Have fun! | White Johnny (Funk Rock) by ivanjs | 8 years ago |
| Hey, thanks. None of White Johnny is loops. it's all "analog". I play bass and wanted to do an old style (well, 90s anyway) funk song, so I laid down a click track, played bass, and had some friends come in and lay down drums, guitar and vocals. If you're into bass, take a listen to my bass song-"Bassed Out" on here. It's me on bass and some Drum loops. If you play an instrument, feel free to download it and add some guitar or something. It's mostly a backing track I put together for other musicians to play with! I have 5 songs on here so far and am working on others. The week I uploaded them, icompositions was having some problems and they kind of got swept under the carpet, so it was nice to hear someone actually listened to them. Take care.
