Biography
In real life I live in the mountains, halfway between the hippies of Santa Cruz and the yuppies of the Silicon Valley. My daily experience is an interesting, amusing and, sometimes, heartbreaking juxtaposition of many different lifestyles.
I'm a music maker, animal lover, book reader and coffee brewer.
I consider myself an amateur composer. I work a 9-5 job that pays the bills, and then try desperately to find the time and energy to work on my music in the hours between job and sleep. I write music purely for my own pleasure. I do not perform and, as of yet, have not sold any of my pieces. I do distribute mp3s of my songs to friends and family, hoping that I can spread some of the magic and beauty that music gives to me.
I’ve been playing, performing and writing music since I was tall enough to reach a keyboard. My first instrument was a small electric organ that neither of my parents knew how to play, but had in the house for some unknown reason. My mom bought a sticker kit and put colored stickers on the different notes and I taught myself to play by matching colors to the notes in the books. At some point, we all got tired of listening to the organ, so I got a piano and instantly fell in love.
I have been playing keyboards and piano for 25 years now, with 14 years of formal piano training. I spent 15 years playing electric keyboards, piano and organ as an occasional accompianist for weddings, funerals and choirs.
I have a partially finished Bachelors degree in Music Composition, and along with piano, I have had 11 years of formal training on the French Horn. I’ve also had 8 years of formal choral training, but my singing days are over. It’s all instrumentals for me from now on.
I have not had any training in stringed instruments, but I find that more and more often my compositions are asking for strings to be added. I have just recently begun branching out and attempting to write for instruments outside of my comfort zone, so I would love any feedback and suggestions you can offer me.
My musical influences are varied and wide-spread, from Aaron Copland, Mozart and Rachmaninoff to Enya, Hans Zimmer and Sigur Ros. My music most resembles that of my piano-playing influences - George Winston, Jim Brickman, Yanni, and David Lanz.
My compositions don’t really fit into an established genre. I call them new-agey contemporary instrumentals. Alot of my pieces are quiet, background music - stuff you can listen to while studying or working. There are no lyrics. I write primarily for the piano, with some accompanying instrumentation. I take more of a minimalistic approach - very little going on aside from my piano.
The truth is that I've had years and years of musical training and theory, but I don't remember even half of it. I play what I feel and what sounds good to me. If it resonates with you, too, that's even better.
Enjoy the music!
