I think the understated performance you gave is perfect for this piece. The key change is a touch awkward, but the keys you are using show off your voices nicely.

I love how the piano and the cello solo intertwine. Although the flute part is nice, I think this could easily stand as a cello and piano duet for live concert use.

This is is a fun song. The sound quality is not bad either. I like your idea of putting fun songs on the CD for the kids to "find" (My husband is listening in the background. He groaned when you got to L.L.)
Nice of you to share.

I love the voicing. Some of the wonderful moving passages are obscured by the thundering chords about 1/3 through, but that's a small nitpick in a beautiful piece of music. Wonderful organ sound, here. Is it virtual or real?

I really like it when they touch it with the 3 part harmony. Very nice. I also like the familiar words of the gloria inserted in the song. The counterpoint section is nice, too. It is nice when your family shares your music, isn't it?

Fun and energetic. Mallet instruments give such excitement to a composition. Great instrument choices!
Zoomorphisms - The Caterpillar by soulima 3 years ago
I get a picture of a caterpillar frantically crawling along a branch, eating every leaf in sight. I really liked the unexpected 'heft' of this piece.
As was mentioned above, I'm not a real fan of the 'fade out' ending. With this much sound, I would have loved to hear a final chord, coda, or segue into a butterfly. Still, a small crit of a fabulous piece!
Zoomorphisms - The Monkey by soulima 3 years ago
I love the playfulness of this! Of course, that's what monkeys are all about! I really like your use of various percussion colors. It's almost like a percussion ensemble with wind accompaniment. The only real critique I have is that the clarinet voice is annoyingly high. I know it's for Eb clarinet, but it actually physically hurts my ears. Maybe bring it down an octave on occasion? (Now on my 3rd listen, it could be picc. just something in the overtones that is jarring.)
Other than that, I love the ostinato effect you have going in the tuned percussion. Those low winds almost sound like 'Baby Elephant Walk' near the end. Very cool.

I really love these lyrics! Your delivery is great, too. I like the string entrance about 2/3 of the way through. Unexpected, yet obviously exactly right. Your subject for this song is also a welcome one.

Thanks for listening to my students - we are fortunate that music and art are mandated in Wisconsin - for now. Testing is slowly pulling resources away from learning, and the people 'in charge' are not artists, but bean-counters. I'm waiting for the pendulum to swing the other way, and for people to notice that finding creative solutions to problems takes creative people.
Deck The Halls (Instrumental) by PeteFalck 3 years ago
This is a nice interpretation of a classic song. The second verse could bring out the melody line a bit more, but otherwise, a fun romp through a Christmas carol. Happy Holidays!
Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra 3 - Amabile Con Moto by soulima 3 years ago
Lots of movement gives it a rather restless feeling. So many octave jumps in the clarinet kind of take away from the melodic flow, IMHO. I'd like to hear this on more sophisticated software, or played by a real player, though. Perhaps realistic phrasing and breathing would provide the phrases that my ear craves by about 1/3 through. Nice balance between you solo clarinet and the backing strings.

I have sung this text set to several tunes. I love the lilting meter of your tune. This is definitely worthy of the awards it has won! My background as a former H.S. choir judge compels me to take the choir to task for letting the tempo sag. The addition of the tambourine is a nice accent.

Very nice. Now, I'm looking forward to the hauntingly beautiful song, sung by a young man about his true love, and how he'll always be there for her. Add some acoustic bass about 2/3 of the way through, add a bridge and a key change, and you've got gold.
Sunny Fields (Classical version) by Digipoll 3 years ago
I love your album art. This is very simple and clean. I enjoyed that aspect of your music very much, but I would have liked to hear more interplay between instruments developed as the song moved on. Lots of nice melodic snippets, more harmonic development would add some warmth. You did a bit of that with the flutes about 3/4 of the way through.
Ramayana-11: Ravana's Palace by DavidBowles 3 years ago
Great build, starting with the tabla. I like the guitar-like riffs you have in the middle section. The cowbell and synth (?) are great, too. It keeps it from being strictly 'Indian' atmosphere, and gives a nod to other music styles.

This is a great mix of jazz, 20th century, and sound effects, all rolled into one. I love the space you have between the instruments. Even though I was listening on powerbook speakers, it was clean and crisp.

Very 'Fanfare for the Common Man' at the opening. Interesting mix of instruments. It does have a sports team sound to it, with the stringendo strings, brass stabs and rock guitar entrance, and it's a good length for its intended use.
Adieu Oh Lovely Spring [for recorders] by davidsmith99 3 years ago
The piece is very nice. There were a couple of times the tambourine didn't seem to quite fit the rest of the style of the piece, but generally it was a nice addition. I'd like to hear it a wee bit drier. Generally, a thoughtful, calming piece.

"12:45" Duet for Piano and Oboe by davidsmith99 4 years ago

Lovely. Nice mix of traditional and modern tonalities and rhythms. The oboe tone is quite nice. May I inquire as to what you're using for that sound?

Piano is also nice. This sounds like a nice piano accompaniment, it stays under the oboe sound, and is fairly restrained (which IMHO is a good thing.)

Goodbye Stangleville (So Long Jane) by BossHook 4 years ago
5

No kidding! My husband's grandparents lived in Stangleville, (WI) until his grandpa died in 1994. Then Grandma moved to Mishicot. Anyway, so many of those small towns on the eastern edge of Wisconsin grew up first along the lakeshore, then the railroad, then the highway from Miwaukee to Green Bay, and when things change, they slowly die away. I think the church and the bar are still there at Stangleville, but not much else.
Oh - the song! Nice groove, great vocal delivery, and the backing guitars, piano & drums are just right.

Great colaboration. The only thing that could be improved to my hearing is that Doreen's voice could be a little more forward and clearer. Her expression and vocal quality are just great! Yes, there are some very confident, strong singers in this group! I like your accompaniment very much, but even more, I like that the children's voices and the words are very much 'front and center'. Music is a great way to remember important things, and I'm sure the kids will remember this verse for a very long time.

Yes, this is an excellent opening bit that grabs attention right away. I'd be a bit more deliberate about the timing of those first chords - They don't seem quite synced up. I had to listen to see if they were triplets, or not. Otherwise, good instrumentation and energy.

Astral Antiphon (DJP's Astromix) by DJPower_AKA_DJP 4 years ago
It's always interesting to hear a remix - especially one like this that has so much percussion in it. The metallic arpeggios about 2/3 of the way through were really spine tingling. Although the beat that you overlaid on the vocals wasn't the one I had in mind when I originally recorded this, it fit really well, and I especially liked the way you used it in the last section of the piece - it felt like it really belonged there! Great mix!
"War Game Suite" Op. 17 by zeroAcademy 4 years ago
5

Interesting choices of instruments. I like the woodwind solo near the beginning - You do nice, symphonic things with the winds, as far as solo lines. I have to say, the string voices aren't particularly convincing in the upper registers, but that's a function of the software. Nice form and layout of the piece. To me, it sounds more like the background of a movie or well-made video game than a symphony (that's not a put-down, just an observation.)
"Through and Past the Glaciers" for Orchestra by Aafarr2 4 years ago
5

Excellent, expansivevwork. The string sounds are excellent, brass a little less organic sounding, but the care and crafting you put into this are obvious. This is definitely cinematic in its style and form. The end is slightly disappointing, as I was waiting for a tonic chord to finish it, or an entrance from a quietly singing men's chorus, or another device to segue this into another movement.
Lush, well-developed orchestration. You have potential, my friend - real potential that I only dream of having. Thank you for posting this, and then giving us the heads up in the symphony forum post.
In praise of teachers by georgeptingley 4 years ago
This is an interesting orchestration - so traditional in the use of string orchestra, then the glockenspiel and the guitar make their appearance for a brief moment. The tempo you chose for this is very regal and stately. It allows me as a listener to follow the contrapuntal lines with more clarity. Great background explanation, too.

Great setting up of atmosphere. You took your time. Then when the winds come in, it's wonderful, too. Oh - nice percussion roll! Wow! well orchestrated and very emotive. On listening again, I'm impressed with the bends you got in the pipe part and the whistle part. They really add a touch of authenticity. Really, your orchestration is so perfect, throwing the melody line back to the strings two thirds of the way through, then the final melodic statement from the orchestra. I'm impressed!

Second graders are notorious for trying to sneak in something silly, surprising or slightly 'naughty'. My rule is that it has to be suitable for our audience (which is the kindergarten and first grade students.) Beyond that, it's their call.
Revenge by Sheth 4 years ago
Nice writing! I like the canonic entrances. It might sound more full if you combine instruments of different ranges and timbres. Right now, you have low instruments together, then flutes playing together. If you mix it up a little, then add a touch of reverb, the harmonic builds would be more apparent and sustained. The chord progressions are very nice.

I enjoy the quotes from various songs. is it 'This Old Man', or the Barney theme song 'I Love You...' Even though it's a bit tongue in cheek, you get some really nice dynamic contrast here, and I love the way you keep things moving forward, yet consistently come back to that children's theme. Nicely understated countermelodies, too.

Interesting choice of music style for the poem. At first I heard something else in my own mind, (more New Agey, I would have done something with a flute, I'm sure) but as I listened, the jazz trumpet started to feel right, and the beat settled into the loop of the lyrics. It's great to get a dose of 'done a different way than I woulda' with something as smooth and lyrical as this. Nice collaboration!

That main piano sound had a bit of a 'koto' flavor to it. I enjoyed the way you added the additional strings and flute sounds on the second pass. The recording has a bit of a muffled sound to it, although that might be your choice of instruments. Sweet piece - I was just getting into it when it ended- I would have loved to hear it continue for another minute or two!

Great collaboration! Your voice has a nice understated quality. I would have loved to hear one of the choruses (danger zone) up an octave with a bit more angst near the end. I love the string ostinato. The woodwind and brass voices leave a bit to be desired, although I realize they are only software instruments. I enjoy the driving forward motion of this piece. I like the space you give the instruments by panning them to different places. You are right about the recording. Hopefully as you create more music it will be worthwhile to invest in some higher grade equipment and/or software instruments. This is a nice theme, and performed very well. It might be nice to add an additional 'B' theme to insert about 2/3 of the way through to add some variation.

John, I'm using your arrangement with my own children/youth choir. We're singing it this Sunday. Sweet Saxophone sound, here! Also, a nice bed of strings and piano. The opening was a little bit harsh, but after that, the balance and sound were fantastic. Really nice chord bed, and I like the harp voicing with the flute. The first section could use a melodic line over the chords, IMO. This sounds like it should be under dialogue in a movie or play. It is very reminiscent of sections of 'The Lord of the Rings' - maybe that's why it feels so cinematic to me.

It's nice to hear your singing and playing. Interesting how you mix a pentatonic melody with some of those jazz chords. Also, you have a 2 beat feeling. Very flowing. I tend to sing this in a very 'primitive' style, as fits its history, but you're using it in your own style, which is very nice. I really like the way you do the last verse acappella, and then bring the piano back in. Very effective for focusing attention on the words you're singing.
My middle son played piano for offertory last week at our church, and we were pretty proud of him. It is nice to hear different types of music as offered during the summer 'choir vacation' in many churches.
