Nature encounter...

The owner of the workshop where I spend my days likes to 'grown things', so he has sunflowers, corn, beans, etc around the place (the place is big and very unorganized). During a forced break, one of so many, he asked me if I wanted to see the sunflowers because they have just opened.
We walked around and ended up in the corn field that's next to a construction he is doing for a new building (told you, the place is big and unorganized). He asks me if I want some corn, I'm thinking 'how does he think I'll cook it?'. Well, these are little sweet baby corn so you can eat them raw (I didn't know that until I saw him doing it).

And there I was, eating raw corn right from the field and I turn and look at one of the holes for the foundation and see a big hairless tail proceeded by some hair that's showing out of a side hole in the big hole. I asked innocently while munching on the corn 'what's that animal?' and he says 'a rat'. 'A what?'. 'A rat'. 'It can be, it's too big'. 'oh no, we have bigger'. The body of the damn thing was at least as big as my 14" laptop, if not longer. She got out of the hole and it was indeed a rat. A HUGE RAT.

And there I was, eating raw corn right from the field looking at a huge rat and thinking 'what the heck am I doing?'. He got me out of my thoughts saying 'I think the snakes will eat it tonight, there's no way the rat can get out of the hole'. 'The snakes?'. 'Yes, there are some around'. 'What snakes?'. 'This is cobra zone, huge bad snakes'. 'You are kidding'. But no, he wasn't. This IS cobra zone and they are, if not huge, really bad snakes.

And there I was, munching the freaking corn (because he gave me more), looking at the laptop size rat that could soon be eaten by the huge bad snake that lives a few meters from where I've been spending my days, till midnight sometimes, these last weeks. What the heck am I doing here?

(Falls out of chair, laughing) I've seen big rats smiley Water rats get pretty big.

My older brother used to live in the second car garage as my divorced mother only had one car ..

The pet cat used to visit him.

One night, the pet cat came to visit him. He remembered giving it a pat. Felt this unusual tail. Realised that the cat had left him a treat in case he got hungry .. the rat being quite dead. smiley

So, would you like any butter or salt for your corn?

Jaja...excellent tale of vivid imagery. Nice metaphor too...a rat too big to get out of its own hole getting eaten by a snake. There's a lesson in that for all of us smiley
