Too tired to do it right
March 20, 2012 | 11:17 pm

Tide's gone out, my friends, but let's not panic

Three things I like in a good piece:

A hook. Something whistleable. A countermelody.

Repetition, not a loop. A theme, introduced, repeated, modified, and again a variation. A wholesale key change, a surprise second melody. All on the theme.

Dramatic tension. A transition from major to minor, a bridge back to the melody, a bump and three beats of silence. A crescendo, a whole new instrument adding another color.

So having poured my soul into a concerto lately, I don't have energy to do it right. My brain grabs a hook, and I'll get into it a bit, and part of me says, "Okay this is promising. Now to do it right. A countermelody, a crescendo, a bridge, a variation, and, oh, it all sounds like so much work, I think I'll just take a nap instead."

I've only been tired for a couple of weeks. Until the tide comes back in I'll keep uploading old stuff and listening to great music you all make for me.

Thank you for your support.

I hear you sir both in what you like in a good piece, and in how much work it seems. Being tired sucks. I've got to be up for work in under 3 hours!

Ah yes, I can relate. You do put so much effort into a piece that it would seem daunting. So just breathe for a while. Then just do it one bit at a time. Sometimes looking at the whole of something makes it seem impossible. Just look for the pieces. Eventually they will make a whole. I hope you find new inspiration and feel better soon.
